    How to prepare and deliver a good presentation : general principles for success

    The author has more than 14 years' experience in higher education, supporting students in delivering presentations for assessment and in marking across all levels up to masters, and as an external examiner. This article examines and highlights the general principles that will assist the student in writing, preparing and delivering a successful presentation. Standing up in front of your peers, tutors, or interviewers can be one of the most stressful things students and job applicants face. The aim of this article is to give advice and encouragement to the student, thereby hopefully reducing some of the stress that presentations cause. Areas such as the length of the presentation, structure and content, maintaining confidentiality, referencing, presentation marking criteria, spelling and grammar, font size and clutter, animation and colour, individual or group presentations, poster presentations, preparing for questions, audience participation, notes and handouts, confidence and body language, and feedback will be discussed

    Pass a Law, Any Law, Fast! State Legislative Responses to the Kelo Backlash

    The Supreme Court in Kelo v. City of New London left protection of property against takings for economic development to the states. Since Kelo, thirty-seven states have enacted legislation to update their eminent domain laws. This paper is the first to theoretically and empirically analyze the factors that influence whether, in what manner, and how quickly states change their laws through new legislation. Fourteen of the thirty-seven new laws offer only weak protections against development takings. The legislative response to Kelo was responsive to measures of the backlash but only in the binary decision whether to pass any new law. The decision to enact a meaningful restriction was more a function of relevant political economy measures. States with more economic freedom, greater value of new housing construction, and less racial and income inequality are more likely to have enacted stronger restrictions, and sooner. Of the thirteen states that have not updated, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi are highly likely to do so in the future. Hawaii, Massachusetts and New York are unlikely to update ever if at all

    Crime, Institutions and Sector-Specific FDI in Latin America

    In this article, we explore how crime and institutions affect the flow of capital in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI) to Latin American and Caribbean countries in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors during the 1996-2010 period. We use three different variables related to violent crime: homicides, crime victimization, and an index of organized crime. We find that there is a correlation between the institutional and crime variables, where the significance of institutional variables tends to disappear when the crime variables are added to the model. We find that higher crime victimization and organized crime are associated with lower FDI in the tertiary sector. We do not find that crime affects FDI inflows to Latin America in the primary and secondary sector
