The real SAP® Business one cost : a case study of ERP adoption in an SME

This paper reports on a UK based service management Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) that invested into SAP® Business One. The action research case study highlights the real cost and difficulties faced in moving to the one single SAP system and the process that was followed in order to identify third-party vendors that can integrate or customise SAP® Business One. This paper highlights the additional costs required to ensure a ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution to close the gap between strategic needs and the existing SAP Business One solution. The gap itself is illustrated by highlighting 10 key functionalities expected by the given service management SME. The actual implementation cost of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) was found to be approximately double the initial SAP costs. The real costs involve time for, among other things, process reengineering, strategic decision making, software add-ons, staff-training, project-management and software maintenance

The Upregulation of α2δ-1 Subunit Modulates Activity-Dependent Ca2+ Signals in Sensory Neurons.

As auxiliary subunits of voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels, the α2δ proteins modulate membrane trafficking of the channels and their localization to specific presynaptic sites. Following nerve injury, upregulation of the α2δ-1 subunit in sensory dorsal root ganglion neurons contributes to the generation of chronic pain states; however, very little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here we show that the increased expression of α2δ-1 in rat sensory neurons leads to prolonged Ca(2+) responses evoked by membrane depolarization. This mechanism is coupled to CaV2.2 channel-mediated responses, as it is blocked by a ω-conotoxin GVIA application. Once initiated, the prolonged Ca(2+) transients are not dependent on extracellular Ca(2+) and do not require Ca(2+) release from the endoplasmic reticulum. The selective inhibition of mitochondrial Ca(2+) uptake demonstrates that α2δ-1-mediated prolonged Ca(2+) signals are buffered by mitochondria, preferentially activated by Ca(2+) influx through CaV2.2 channels. Thus, by controlling channel abundance at the plasma membrane, the α2δ-1 subunit has a major impact on the organization of depolarization-induced intracellular Ca(2+) signaling in dorsal root ganglion neurons

Complex Phenotype of Hypercholesterolemia in a Family with Both ABCG8 and APOB Mutations

Familial hypercholesterolemia is a common genetic hypercholesterolemia caused by mutations in LDLR, APOB and PCSK9 that leads to premature atherosclerosis. Other rare disorders like sitosterolemia can present the same phenotype but have distinct therapeutic interventions. We present a case of severe hypercholesterolemia in a 5-year-old child found to have both familial hypercholesterolemia and sitosterolemia. The proband was diagnosed initially as familial hypercholesterolemia, but the lack of pathogenic variants with Sanger approach questioned this hypothesis. High levels of sitosterol established the diagnosis of sitosterolemia, genetically confirmed by an ABCG8 homozygous variant c.1974C>G/p. (Tyr658*). Next-generation sequencing re sequence for familial hypercholesterolemia genes revealed an APOB heterozygous functional variant (c.11477C>T/p. (Thr3826Met), in a region previously unstudied. The mother presented with the same genotype but a milder phenotype. Control of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels was only accomplished with dietary and therapeutic intervention for both sitosterolemia and familial hypercholesterolemia. The correct diagnosis of dyslipidemia is important to establish proper dietary and pharmacological intervention for atherosclerosis prevention.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Diplomacy in action: Latourian Politics and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reviews scientific literature on climate change in an attempt to make scientific knowledge about climate change accessible to a wide audience that includes policymakers. Documents produced by the IPCC are subject to negotiations in plenary sessions, which can be frustrating for the scientists and government delegations involved, who all have stakes in getting their respective interests met. This paper draws on the work of Bruno Latour in order to formulate a so-called ‘diplomatic’ approach to knowledge assessment in global climate governance. Such an approach, we argue, helps to make climate governance more inclusive by helping to identify values of parties involved with the IPCC plenaries, and allowing those parties to recognize their mutual interests and perspectives on climate change. Drawing on observations during IPCC plenaries, this paper argues that a Latourian form of diplomacy can lead to more inclusive negotiations in climate governance

This chapter provides an overview of the political decision-making process and the modernisation of the state apparatus during the 19th century. It discusses the legal capacity of the states which acted either as a constraint on policymakers or enabled them to pursue and enforce a certain set of economic decisions. At the beginning of the 19th century, the region was divided up among the Austrian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Russian Empire. The late 19th century and the remaining time up to the war saw a rise in protectionism, a growing share of state ownership in infrastructure, and a growing government share in gross domestic product (GDP). In Russia, where serfs belonged either to the state or to private persons and accounted for more than half the population at the beginning of the 19th century, the emancipation of state serfs started in the 1840s, and that of serfs in the private sector followed in 1861
