The Industrial Revolution Impact on Families as Seen in Hard Times

This paper investigates how the Industrial Revolution affected the life of the British society’s families in the Hard Times novel. Throughout this discussion, the researchers will examine the main dimensions that had its negative influence on changing the situations of the families and the internal relationships among the families’ members till everything was muddled and hard as this novel is titled. In Hard Times, Charles Dickens represents four families of different social framework, Gradgrind’s family, Stephen’s family, Bounderby’s family, and the circus performers’ family. When the researcher explores each one of those families, she finds that the industrial revolution’s impact is really tough, since those families keep suffering throughout the novel due to its cruelty. This revolution is powerful enough to make the relationship among parents and their children, and among husbands and wives cold, uncomfortable, and lacking the usual warm familiar atmosphere

Kulturelle Identität

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das Themenfeld der kulturellen Identität aus der philosophischen Perspektive bearbeitet. Im ersten Teil meiner Arbeit beschäftigte mich mit den Ursachen für die Aktualität der kulturellen Identität. In diesem Zusammenhang ist das Phänomen der Globalisierung mit ihren Auswirkungen im Fokus. Die verschiedenen Dimensionen wie die ökonomische, politische und historische werden behandelt, sowie die Veränderungen bezüglich Raum und Zeit. In diesem Abschnitt gehe ich noch auf weitere Ursachen ein wie Migration, das Ende des Kalten Krieges und Postkolonialismus. Diese Auseinandersetzungen dienen dazu, kulturelle Identität im gegenwärtigen Kontext zu diskutieren. In dem weiteren Abschnitt widme ich mich dem Thema der ethnischen Identität und der ethnischen community. Der Begriff der ethnischen Identität wird als Synonym für kulturelle Identität von Kollektiven in der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie verwendet. Ich untermauere dies anhand der Thesen von André Gingrich, der Kennzeichen ethnischer communities herausarbeitet. Weiters gehe ich auf das Fremd- und Selbstbild ethnischer communities ein. Die Frage, wer das Recht hat, zu bestimmen, wer nun zugehörig zu einer bestimmten ethnischen community ist und wer nicht, ist eine allgegenwärtige. Zum einen deklarieren sich Mitglieder ethnischer communities selbst als Zugehörige, zum anderen erheben manche den Anspruch über Andere zu bestimmen, wer inkludiert und wer exkludiert wird. Auch Medien und Politik spielen eine große Rolle in dem Prozess der Verortung der Zugehörigkeit. Die Zuschreibung der Zugehörigkeiten enthält ein gewisses Spannungspotential in multikulturellen Gesellschaften, womit ich mich in dem nächsten Teil meiner Arbeit beschäftige. In dem darauf folgenden Kapitel über Multikulturalismus richte ich meinen Fokus auf die gesellschaftliche und politische Dimension des multikulturellen Lebens. Ethnische Gruppierungen aller Art pochen auf ihr Recht der Selbstbestimmung und der Wahrung ihrer kulturellen Identität. Vor dem Hintergrund der steigenden Brisanz der Thematisierung der kulturellen Identität setze ich mich vor allem mit den Theorien von Charles Taylor, Stuart Hall und Seyla Benhabib auseinander. Ich lege den Schwerpunkt mit Charles Taylors Werk Multikulturalismus und die Politik der Anerkennung auf die Philosophie. Ich behandle seine Theorie der Politik der Anerkennung eingehend und gebe somit einen Einblick in die gegenwärtige Bedeutsamkeit der Frage der kulturellen Identität. Im nächsten Abschnitt beschäftige ich mich mit der politischen Dimension der Anerkennung und erörtere zwei verschiedene Ansätze, die Taylor darstellt: zum einen den der Politik der Würde und zum anderen den der Politik der Differenz. Umgemünzt auf die Realität der Politik widerspiegeln diese beiden verschiedenen Wege, den des Liberalismus und des Kommunitarismus. Anschließend ziehe ich einen Vergleich zwischen den beiden Konzepten. Taylor schlägt in seinen weiteren Ausführungen ein alternatives Liberalismusmodell vor, worauf ich näher eingehe. In dem abschließenden Teil meiner Arbeit gehe ich auf die Herausforderung multikultureller Gesellschaften ein, verschiedene ethnische communities mit ihren Besonderheiten anzuerkennen. Minderheiten trachten nach dem Status der Anerkennung. Taylor argumentiert, dass jedem Menschen in seiner kulturellen Identität Anerkennung zusteht, jedoch bedarf es einer Überprüfung der kulturellen Praxen. Diese These erörtere ich zum Schluss meiner Arbeit und nehme kritisch Stellung dazu sowie zu Taylors Kulturbegriff

Entropy-Based Cavitation and Primary Atomization Analysis with a 2D Transparent Injector

International audienceA transparent scale-up injector with asymmetric incoming flow direction was designed to promote cavitation on mainly one-side of the orifice. This orifice has a rectangular cross-section that provides straightforward optical access to the internal flow. This geometry was designed to study the role of the internal flow, and particularly of the development of cavitation, on the modification of the primary atomization process occurring as soon as the liquid emanates from the injector. The internal flow is classified into four regimes based on the extent of the cavitation zone; 1-no-cavitation, 2-developing cavitation, 3-super cavitation and 4-semi-hydraulic flip cavitation. Image series of 500 images was recorded for different flow rates belonging to regimes 2-4. Image segmentation is applied to each individual image to identify liquid and vapour phase regions. Based on these segmented images, the mean and rms values of the cavitation extent are determined for each cavitating regime. Furthermore, a more detailed statistical analysis of the cavitation is obtained with the computation of an entropy image, bringing indication on interface between vapour and liquid and on the shed cavitation bubbles. The liquid jet fragmentation is qualified from the entropy analysis also. The primary atomization is associated with the region in the image where the liquid core is fragmented in detached ligaments and drops. This region is easily identified from the entropy analysis and the primary atomization is quantified through the computation of the area of this region. In the presence of cavitation, the primary atomization process is altered. The way liquid fragmentation is modified by cavitation is shown to be correlated to the extent of the cavitation zone in the orifice.
