    Effect of altered nitrogen availability following accelerated succession of a forest: the role of tree species and size.

    Undergraduate Research Exper.Many factors affect the amount of mycorrhizal colonization in a plant, such as soil fertility and plant species. We focus on the effect of accelerated succession, which changes nitrogen availability, on mycorrhizal colonization. Tree species and size were also of interest, as very few direct comparisons of species or size have been conducted. We measured colonization between sapling and canopy variants of Acer rubrum (red maple), Quercus rubra (northern red oak), and Pinus strobus (white pine) in a northern temperate forest in northern Michigan by analyzing fine roots using a well-developed gridline intersect method. These trees were located at two sites, one where succession was accelerated and one without accelerated succession that served as a control. Greater mycorrhizal colonization was measured in the forest undergoing accelerated succession, implying that several factors besides nutrient availability may be influencing colonization. Greater mycorrhizal colonization was also measured in the white pines, likely due to its coarser roots which rely more on mycorrhizal associations because of lower surface to volume area in the roots.     Conjunctival Autograft With Fibrin Glue for Pterygium: A Long Term Recurrence Assessment

    Pterygium is an old challenge for ophthalmic surgeons. Its final resolution is surgical intervention. New surgical techniques have been introduced to improve the outcome, however, the possibility of recurrence always exists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pterygium recurrence rate with a long-term follow-up, after surgery was performed with conjunctival autograft and fibrin glue as a biological adhesive. A retrospective case-series study was performed, reviewing cases operated from May 2008 to May 2018 with at least 1 year of follow-up in a private clinic in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The evaluation time-points were at 1 day, 20 days, 6 months, 1 year after surgery and then every year. All the procedures were performed by the same surgeon in single center. Topical Mitomycin C (MMC), 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), cauterization and/or amniotic membrane were not used in any case. From a total of 159 operated eyes (82/77 women/men), pterygium was recurred in 7 eyes (4.4%); all of them detected at the second follow-up time-point (at day 20). Intraoperative complications did not occur, but at the postoperative stage, one case presented a conjunctival granuloma, which was surgically resolved. In conclusion, a low pterygium recurrence rate was observed after conjunctival autograft with fibrin glue. In our study, recurrence was found at the postoperative first month and did not recur until the end of follow-up for 10 years. Epub: October 1, 2019

    A Paralisia cerebral Ă© caracteriza por distĂșrbio nĂŁo progressivo na infĂąncia durante o desenvolvimento fetal ou infantil, gerando anormalidades da postura. O objetivo foi analisar o perfil das crianças com paralisia cerebral atendidas na clinica escola de fisioterapia da Universidade de Marilia (Unimar). Foi utilizado para esse estudo ficha de avaliação de 27 crianças extraindo os dados:  Função motora grossa (GMFCS), Classificação da Habilidade Manual (MACS), Classificação TopogrĂĄfica, idade e gĂȘnero, sendo aprovada pelo comitĂȘ de Ă©tica da universidade. Foi encontrado predominĂąncia do sexo masculino 70,3%. Faixa etĂĄria com mĂ©dia de idade foi de ±7,9, com desvio padrĂŁo de ±5,0. Classificação anatĂŽmica onde predominou 63% com tetraplegia e 74,1% com espasticidade. Classificação Motora Grossa (GMFCS) onde representou 78%, totalizados entre o no nĂ­vel 4 e 5 e Classificação da Habilidade Manual (MACS) 67%. Conclui-se que as crianças atendidas na clinica, possuem um perfil motor com graves limitaçÔes funcionais

    Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon cross section in pp collisions at s√s = 13 TeV using 36 fb−1 of ATLAS data

    The differential cross section for isolated-photon production in pp collisions is measured at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. The differential cross section is presented as a function of the photon transverse energy in different regions of photon pseudorapidity. The differential cross section as a function of the absolute value of the photon pseudorapidity is also presented in different regions of photon transverse energy. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations from Jetphox and Sherpa as well as next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD calculations from Nnlojet are compared with the measurement, using several parameterisations of the proton parton distribution functions.     Measurement of prompt photon production in sNN 8.16 TeV p+Pb collisions with ATLAS

    The inclusive production rates of isolated, prompt photons in collisions at TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 165 nb−1 recorded in 2016. The cross-section and nuclear modification factor are measured as a function of photon transverse energy from 20 GeV to 550 GeV and in three nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass pseudorapidity regions, , , and . The cross-section and values are compared with the results of a next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation, with and without nuclear parton distribution function modifications, and with expectations based on a model of the energy loss of partons prior to the hard scattering.     ATLAS data quality operations and performance for 2015–2018 data-taking

    The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider reads out particle collision data from over 100 million electronic channels at a rate of approximately 100 kHz, with a recording rate for physics events of approximately 1 kHz. Before being certified for physics analysis at computer centres worldwide, the data must be scrutinised to ensure they are clean from any hardware or software related issues that may compromise their integrity. Prompt identification of these issues permits fast action to investigate, correct and potentially prevent future such problems that could render the data unusable. This is achieved through the monitoring of detector-level quantities and reconstructed collision event characteristics at key stages of the data processing chain. This paper presents the monitoring and assessment procedures in place at ATLAS during 2015–2018 data-taking. Through the continuous improvement of operational procedures, ATLAS achieved a high data quality efficiency, with 95.6% of the recorded proton-proton collision data collected at √ s = 13 TeV certified for physics analysis.Fil: Wahlberg, Hernan Pablo.     Electron and photon energy calibration with the ATLAS detector using 2015-2016 LHC proton-proton collision data

    This paper presents the electron and photon energy calibration obtained with the ATLAS detector using about 36 fb−1 of LHC proton-proton collision data recorded at √s=13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. The different calibration steps applied to the data and the optimization of the reconstruction of electron and photon energies are discussed. The absolute energy scale is set using a large sample of Z boson decays into electron-positron pairs. The systematic uncertainty in the energy scale calibration varies between 0.03% to 0.2% in most of the detector acceptance for electrons with transverse momentum close to 45 GeV . For electrons with transverse momentum of 10 GeV the typical uncertainty is 0.3% to 0.8% and it varies between 0.25% and 1% for photons with transverse momentum around 60 GeV .     Search for pairs of scalar leptoquarks decaying into quarks and electrons or muons in s√s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for new-physics resonances decaying into a lepton and a jet performed by the ATLAS experiment is presented. Scalar leptoquarks pair-produced in pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are considered using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1, corresponding to the full Run 2 dataset. They are searched for in events with two electrons or two muons and two or more jets, including jets identified as arising from the fragmentation of c- or b-quarks. The observed yield in each channel is consistent with the Standard Model background expectation. Leptoquarks with masses below 1.8 TeV and 1.7 TeV are excluded in the electron and muon channels, respectively, assuming a branching ratio into a charged lepton and a quark of 100%, with minimal dependence on the quark flavour.
