    Physico-chemical Properties of Serendipity Berry (Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii) Fruit

    This study evaluates the physico-chemical properties of serendipity berry. Physico-chemical properties of the serendipity berries were analyzed. The total number of berries in a bunch of fruit ranged from 45 to 98. This depends on the size of the bunch. The results revealed the dry matter, moisture, soluble solids and vitamin C to be 19.56%, 80.44%, 11.20% and 12.80mg/100g respectively. Titratable acidity and pH were 0.21 % and 6.6 respectively. The number of berries per bunch ranged from 45-98 and the 10-fruit weight was 5.30g. Total carotenoid value was 2.01 mg/100g in the fruit. The fruits have appreciable amount of total soluble solid which could serve as a source of energy.     Microstructural characterisation, physical and chemical properties of rice husk ash as viable Pozzolan in building material: a case study of some Nigerian grown rice varieties

    Recycling of agricultural wastes such as rice husk ash as pozzolan is being increasingly encouraged, particularly in developing countries. In this paper, preliminary investigation on the physical and chemical composit ions of r ice husk ash using different techniques was carried out. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of the r ice husk ash showed residual p ores to be distributed within the ash sample, indicating th at the silica is a highly porous material with a large internal surface area . Samples burnt at 4000 C for 6 hours and 6000 C for 4 hours for ‘Bukus’ and ‘Soro/ Olomo nla’ show aggregates with clearly defined layers of loose flakes compared to ‘Faro 58’. The Energy dispersive x ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis of rice husk ash performed to determine percentages of silica present in the samples were graphically represented. Nine elements (Al, Si, K, Ca, Br, Fe, Mg, Na, Mn) and their corresponding oxides (Al2O3 , SiO2 , K2O, CaO, Br, Fe2O3 , MgO, Na2 O, MnO) were detected with varying concentrations. The three varieties , on the average possess good silica content of over 50% considering the two varied temperature and time. Therefore , the chemical analysis results show that burning at combustion temperature of 6000 C for 4hrs, gives optimal result than at 4000 C for 6hrs because all the samples show high Silica content (Faro 58; 61.9, Bukus; 62.6 and Soro/Olomo nla; 59.5).     Equal Channel Angular Extrusion Characteristics on Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Alloy

    Materials strengthened by conventional methods such as strain hardening, solute additions, precipitation and grain size refinement are often adopted in industrial processes. But there is limitation to the amount of deformation that these conventional methods can impact to a material. This study focused on the review of major mechanical properties of aluminum alloys in the presence of an ultrafine grain size into polycrystalline materials by subjecting the metal to an intense plastic straining through simple shear without any corresponding change in the cross-sectional dimensions of the sample. The effect of the heavy strain rate on the microstructure of aluminum alloys was in refinement of the coarse grains into ultrafine grain size by introducing a high density of dislocations and subsequently re-arranging the dislocations to form an array of grain boundaries.     Mechanical Behaviour and Microstructural Characterization of Carbon Steel Samples from Three Selected Steel Rolling Plants

    The research investigated the mechanical behavior of samples of steel rods obtained from three selected Steel Rolling Companies in South Western part of Nigeria. This was done by carrying out some mechanical tests such as tensile, impact and hardness as well as microstructural examination.Four sets of 16 mm steel rod samples were collected from Tiger steel industries, Phoenix steel and Oxil steel Industies, all located in South West Nigeria, The chemical composition was carried out using a Spectrometer (EDX3600B). Afterwards, different samples were prepared, cut and machined according to ASTM standards dimensions of tensile and impact tests as well as hardness test from which their Ultimate tensile Strength, Yield strength, Percentage elongation, Impact strength and Brinell hardness number were obtained and compared to three standards (ASTM A706, BS 4449 and Nst 65-Mn). Their microstructures were also examined and analyzed.The results showed that the Ultimate tensile strength for the samples from Oxil steel, Phoenix Steel and Tiger steel were 661 N/(mm)2, 653 N/(mm)2 and 631 N/(mm)2 respectively while their hardness values were 150 BHN, 178 BHN, 214 BHN respectively. The sample from Tiger steel and Oxil Steel had the finest and most coarse microstructure respectively. In conclusion, it was observed that the results of the sample analysis from the three selected Steel Rolling Companies conformed to most of the standards except the sample from Tiger steel which had a high hardness value compared to the standard

    Changes in Functional and Pasting Properties of Trifoliate Yam Flour during Storage

    This work aimed at determining the changes in functional and pasting properties of trifoliate yam flour during storage. Freshly harvested trifoliate yam tubers were processed into flour and stored in sealed low density polyethylene polyester for four months. Functional and pasting properties of the flour were evaluated monthly. Moisture contents ranged from 7.49 to 15.30 %. Moisture contents increased with month of storage. Bulk density ranged from 0.58 to 0.69 g/cm3, water absorption capacity 1.44 to 1.93 ml H2O/g and swelling index 1.38 to 2.22. The functional properties decreased with length of storage. Flour obtained at the initial period had the least peak viscosity (3180 cP) while the highest value (3338 cP) was at the second month of storage. Storage of trifoliate yam flour improved the holding strength and final viscosities of the flour. Holding strength and final viscosities increased with length of storage. Flour stored at fourth month had higher setback value (1098.5 cP). There were reductions in the pasting time of the flour with storage periods. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) in pasting temperatures of the flours. Storage of trifoliate yam flour for three months is advisable due to high moisture contents which may be detrimental to keeping quality of the flour.Keywords: Trifoliate yam flour; storage time; pasting properties; functional properties; environmental conditio

    Comparative efficacy of visual inspection with acetic acid versus cytology for cervical cancer screening in Ogbomoso, Nigeria

    Background: Screening test for cervical cancer using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) has been advocated by World Health Organization as a suitable, low cost and feasible alternative modality for control of cervical cancer in resource-poor settings as compared to cytological and colposcopic screening. The need for reproducibility, accuracy and comparable efficacy will influence the acceptability of VIA as primary screening modalities for cervical cancer.Methods: A cross–sectional comparative study conducted at BUTH. Data were obtained from 318 consenting women aged 30–65 years using a systematic random sampling method and an interviewer–administered structured questionnaire. Pap smear samples were taken followed by visual inspection with acetic acid. Using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0, Frequencies were obtained and Chi-square test (X2) was used to compare rates and proportions with the level of statistical significance set at less than 0.05.Results: Positive results for premalignant cervical lesion was 1.3% and 4.1% for VIA and Pap smear respectively (X2=4.52; p=0.034). The sensitivity of VIA was 7.7% with positive predictive value of 25% while specificity was 99.0% with a negative predictive value of 96.2%. The prevalence of abnormal cervical lesion in the population studied was 4.1% (95% CI 2.2% – 6.9%).Conclusions: The detection rate for pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix using VIA was significantly lower than that of Pap smear in this study. There may be needed to exercise caution in adopting VIA as primary screening modality for cervical cancer

    Breast cancer receptor status assessment and clinicopathological association in Nigerian women: A retrospective analysis

    Background: Breast cancer markers are becoming increasingly important in breast cancer research due to their impact on prognosis, treatment and survival. The present retrospective study was carried out to quantify the proportion of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and human epithelial receptor 2 (HER2) expressions and their association with tumour grade, age, and tumour size in breast cancer patients in Nigeria. Materials and methods: The paraffin embedded tissue sections were analysed for breast cancer markers using monoclonal antibody SP1 for ER and SP2 for PR and polyclonal antibody ErbB2 for HER2. Results: A total of 286 breast cancer paraffin wax tissue sections were analysed for ER, PR and HER2 expression. Of all the tissue samples examined, 20 (7%) were ER-positive, 6 (2.1%) were PR-positive, 11 (3.8%) were HER2-positive whereas 248 (87%) were triple-negative breast carcinoma. ER- and PR-positivity was associated with early grade I and II tumours (P 50mm (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: A small proportion of Nigerian women with breast cancer are ER/PR-positive which are associated with less aggressive, better prognosis and benefit from endocrine therapy. An even smaller proportion of patients with aggressive tumors were HER2-posivite but responsive to Herceptin treatment. Unfortunately, a very high proportion of cases were triple-negative which is associated with very aggressive tumours and no targeted treatment, which may explain the high mortality rates from breast cancer in Nigeri

    Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact of Indiscriminate Burials on Property Transactions in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria

    Throughout history, almost all societies have employed different practices of disposing off the dead and one such form is cemetery or burial ground. In the western part of Nigeria, tradition demands that chiefs are not buried in public cemeteries but in secret locations preferably at home.  However, this practice have been flawed and currently, not only chief are buried at home but anybody.  Corpses are now buried indiscriminately in homes, front and back gardens without any recourse to the effect this practice have on the environment. . In view of the foregoing, the study delved into the socio-economic and environmental impact of indiscriminate burial within residential neighbourhood on property transaction in Ado- Ekiti, Western Nigeria. Questionnaire were structured and administered on tenants, landlords, government officials and professionals alike. Stratified sampling technique was adopted in that the city of Ado-Ekiti being the state capital was found suitable and was subsequently divided into the twelve political wards.  Two Hundred and Fifty (250) questionnaire were administered. Emphasis was played on buildings with evidence of tomb. Research findings proved that this practice was rampant especially in the core of the city and that no official (Planned) cemetery could be identified. The study identified the following demerits: environmental degradation; difficulty in land acquisition for public use; property devaluation; spiritual and psychological disturbance. Some of the coping measures suggested include: need for official provision of cemetery by government agencies, religious bodies and social organizations; need to enact enabling laws; public enlightenment and appeals and government at various levels to be more involved in the provision of mass housing to aid easy implementation of basic environmental laws among others Keywords: burial-ground, environment, indiscriminate, property value, socio-economic

    Minimizing Interference in Ultra-Dense Femtocell Networks Using Graph-Based Frequency Reuse Technique

    This paper investigates the performance of graph colouring schemes for frequency assignment in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks with ultra-dense femtocells. The aim of the study is to minimize interference in such networks while ensuring efficient spectrum use for these femtocells. The three schemes investigated are the conventional greedy graph colouring algorithm, the saturation degree algorithm and our proposed graph-based theory (GBT) algorithm. The process of frequency assignment is similar in the last two except that the proposed GBT partitions the femtocells into independent sets for an efficient frequency re-use. The performance of these three schemes was analyzed through extensive simulations to determine the SINR and network capacity that can be obtained with the deployment of these schemes using the ITU-R P1238-7 path loss model. The outcome of this study showed that with the absence of a dynamic frequency assignment scheme, interference level is increased as the number of femtocell users within a particular coverage is increased, leading to a reduction in the capacity of such networks. Simulation results showed that all three algorithms considered have the ability to allocate frequencies to femtocells and minimize interference in a densely deployed environment, thereby increasing network capacity. The proposed GBT assigned the least sub-band thereby ensuring spectral efficiency while minimizing harmful interference. Results show that the greedy algorithm has a disadvantage of inefficiently assigning sub-bands randomly, while the saturation degree assigns more sub-bands when compared with the GBT scheme.Keywords — Femtocell, graph colouring, frequency assignment, LTE

    Material Selection for Fuel Fired Crucible Furnace Using GRANTA

    The study investigated the material selection for the fuel fired crucible furnace using bubble charts. The results were generated using GRANTA software. Different properties were considered during the selection of the materials for the furnace. The appropriate engineering materials were sought locally for the design and construction of the fuel fired crucible furnace. Among several parameters taken into consideration are strength/weight ratio, formability, cost and ability to fulfill specific service functions. All these were taken into consideration during the material selection process for the fuel-fired crucible furnace. These properties were plotted against each other in bubble chart and the selection of the appropriate candidate material was done on the bubble chart. The software plotted the properties of each unit of the furnace in form of bubbles and the candidate material where selected from the bulk of materials suggested by the software. The functions, objectives and constraints of the parts or the units to be designed were adequately specified and the material properties to be selected were determined based on these fundamental parameters
