This study examined the relationship and differences between job-search intensity, self-esteem and career decision-making self-efficacy among students. The moderators variables studied in this research were gender, academic performance and academic programs. Quantitative method used was correlation research. The data were collected from a self-reported questionnaire to 304 graduating students of a public university in Malaysia. Participants were recruited using cluster sampling procedure, also known as multistage sampling. The statistical tests used to analyzed the data were Pearson correlation (r) at 0.01 significant level, t-test and ANOVA at the 0.05 significant level. The finding showed that there are a significant relationship between job-search intensity, self-esteem and career decision-making self-efficacy. The results also show that gender had significant influenced for self-esteem and career decision making self-efficacy. Academic performance (CGPA) influenced job-search intensity and academic programs (faculty) also influenced job-search intensity, self-esteem and career decision-making self-efficacy. The implications for students' developments and career development centre are discussed

Morphological Variation in the Dusky Fruit Bat, Penthetor lucasi, in Sarawak, Malaysia

Morphological analysis of 70 adult individuals of the dusky fruit bat, Penthetor lucasi, was performed using 15 external characters and 18 craniodental characters. Multiple regression and discriminant function analysis (DFA) were applied to test the effects of sex, location and interaction between individuals in the study, and to determine and identify characters which are efficient in differentiating individuals among populations, respectively. Most characters were significantly affected by sex, locality and their interactions. Thus, separate analyses were done for both sexes. The fourth digit metacarpal length (D4MCL) and bulla length (BL) of males, and the hind foot (HF) and dental length (DL) of females, were suggested as the best predictors for the external and craniodental characters, respectively, in differentiating P. lucasi from different localities. These findings establish the morphological morphological variation between three geographically separate populations of P. lucasi within Sarawak. It is suggested that different ecological forces between populations, such as breeding, foraging behaviour, crowding effects and resource availability, could have been the moulding factors behind the observed morphological variations in the different P. lucasi populations

INDIGENOUS PARENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FORMAL EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA

Background and Purpose: Parents play a crucial role in children's educational attainment. Their perception influences their action in giving better formal education to their children. However, the scenario is different for the Indigenous community in Malaysia where formal education is deemed least important and there is a huge gap for Indigenous education attainment compared to the stream population. This paper aims to elucidate the parent perception of formal education effectiveness among the Indigenous community or Orang Asli (in the Malay language) in Terengganu, Malaysia.   Methodology: The research using qualitative methods involved three Indigenous villages in the state of Terengganu. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions and observation. The informants consisted of Indigenous parents, teachers and the officers of the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA).   Findings: Results showed that parents' perceptions are generally stereotyped and unable to stimulate students’ interest. The common problem in teaching and learning is related to parents’ educational background, socioeconomic background, expectations, marital age, surrounding condition and awareness.   Contributions: This study has given the real picture of Indigenous parents' perceptions toward formal education. The implications of Indigenous parents’ education problems are significantly associated with degrading interest among students in education, issues of attendance and students' academic performance.   Keywords: Orang Asli, formal education, academic attainment, parent’s perception, Terengganu.   Cite as: Mohd Noor, M. Does Growth Opportunity Matter in Explaining the Oversubscription Phenomena of Malaysian IPO?

    Get PDF
AbstractThe oversubscription ratio of IPO prior to listing is an anomaly in countries that employed fixed price mechanism. According to the signaling theory argument, IPOs of good quality attract subscription from investors. An analysis was made to observe whether IPOs with growth opportunity (good quality) account for oversubscription. Using multivariate regression, it is found that there is a significant negative relationship between growth opportunity and oversubscription ratio. A significant negative coefficient of growth opportunity suggests that companies with high growth opportunity tend to have low risks and are not overly subscribed by investors as they provide low initial returns

The influence of firm size on IPO oversubscription: evidence from Bursa Malaysia

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of firm size on oversubscription of initial public offerings (IPOs) listed on the Bursa Malaysia from the period of 2005 to 2015. The presence of firm size in influencing oversubscription further enables us to test the information asymmetry argued by Beatty and Ritter (1986). Data of 254 IPOs over a period of 11 years were obtained from the websites of Bursa Malaysia. Multivariate regression analysis was carried out to test for the relationship between oversubscription and independent variables. The finding of the study shows that firm size has a significant and negative influence on oversubscription. The result indicates that large firm which have a proven track records would have lower information asymmetry and do not need to under price their IPOs to attract investors and decrease the probability of oversubscription
