The purpose of this paper is to examine whether and how fairness influences dispute avoidance in Islamic bank financing process. The approach used is exploratory qualitative research, based on semi-structured interview. Data were gathered from small scale entrepreneurs operating an account with Islamic bank, which previously used or are using Islamic financing products in northern Nigeria. The findings from participants show that; fairness has tremendous influence on customers‟ perception of disagreements and disputes, as fair treatment leads to dispute avoidance.Fair treatment in determining prices and terms during negotiations, as well as transparency, determines action of Jaiz Islamic bank as fair or not fair. It is recommended that; due to customers‟ high expectation for farness from Islamic bank, a little misunderstanding may lead to disagreement that leads to conflict.Islamic bankers therefore, should be innovative in conflict management through fairness in all customer related issues. The study contributes to literature of fairness, as making fair treatment a fundamental issue in conflict avoidance process. Particularly in northern Nigeria, where fairness is based on perceptio

Hamman's syndrome: a rare benign syndrome

    Get PDF
Hamman’s syndrome by definition is spontaneous pneumomediastinum with the exclusion of thoracic trauma or iatrogenic cause. It is rare and is more common in adolescence male. Amongst the risk factors are underlying lung condition such as asthma and interstitial lung disease, drug inhalation and parturient woman. Patient usually presents with sudden onset of shortness of breath and chest pain with subcutaneous emphysema on examination. The diagnosis is confirmed with chest radiograph. The prognosis of Hamman’s syndrome is excellent. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve spontaneously. However, Hamman’s syndrome is a poorly recognised disease due to its rarity. Therefore, the patient may be subjected to misdiagnosis and treatment. This is a case report of Hamman’s syndrome misdiagnosed and treated as pneumothorax. The objective of this case report is to highlight the importance of differentiating this benign syndrome with life threatening differentials which may have similar clinical presentation. Thus, avoiding unnecessary costly investigation, treatment and invasive procedures

Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of right supraclavicular lymph nodes from primary ovarian cancer: a rare presentation

    Get PDF
Background: Lymph-node metastases to the right supraclavicular lymph nodes (RSCLNs) in ovarian malignancies are very rare occurrences. The majority of RSCLN metastases normally originate from primary neck, lung, and esophagus malignancies. A literature review revealed that only 2 cases of ovarian metastases to the RSCLNs have been reported. Case: A 28-year-old, single nulliparous woman presented to a local tertiary hospital with a 2-month history of progressive abdominal distension. This was associated with a loss of appetite and a marked weight loss. She had no significant medical illnesses or family history of malignancies. Examination revealed a nontender palpable lymph node in the right supraclavicular region, measuring 4 × 3 cm. No other lymph nodes were palpable at the left supraclavicular or cervical areas. There was also gross ascites. Other examination results were unremarkable. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed an RSCLN mass and complex solid-cystic masses arising from the pelvis. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of the RSCLN was performed, revealing a metastatic adenocarcinoma with features compatible with serous adenocarcinoma of the ovary. Results: This patient was treated successfully with neoadjuvant chemotherapy that was followed by a total abdominal hysterectomy, and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and appendectomy. She was alive with no recurrences at a 1-year regular follow-up. Conclusions: The rarity of RSCLN metastases in ovarian cancer might incline clinicians to neglect the presence of RSCLN enlargement during examinations. Thus, clinicians should examine both left and right SCLNs thoroughly in women suspected of having gynecologic malignancies

The main objective of this study is to develop a Generalised System-Level Model at a system-level point of view of Web server performance for UUM Web Portal. A system-level performance model views the system being modelled as a “black box” which only the arrival rate and service time is considered. It is important in order to measure Web server performance metrics such as server utilization, average server throughput, average number of packet in the server and average response time. This study refers to infinite population and finite queue. It is suitable model because it is easy to define and fast to interpret the results but still represents the real situation. In addition, the complex problem is easily to understand. The developed model can increase the knowledge and understanding about the importance of system-level in Web server performance. It also offers a basic result for Web server assessment in details. Finally, it can assist the management in making decision about system performance to enhance the server system at UUM Computer Center as well

    Performance Evaluation of Web Portals

Performance of Web portals at the system level has not been given much attention. The evaluation at the system level is importance for systems maintenance or further improvement. This study develops an evaluation model based on queuing theory at a system level of web portals performance for a university. A system level performance model views the system being modeled as a ‘black box’ which considers the arrival rate of packets to the portals server and service rate of the portals server. These two parameters are important elements to measure web portals performance metrics such as server utilization, average server throughput, average number of packet in the server and mean response time. This study refers to infinite population and finite queue. The proposed analytical model is simple in such a way that it is easy to define and fast to interpret the results but still represents the real situation. The results present the performance of six parallel web portal

The effectiveness of bismuth breast shielding with protocol optimization in CT scans of the thorax

    Get PDF
Background: Numerous techniques had been proposed to reduce radiation exposure in computed tomography (CT) including the use of radiation shielding. Objective: This study aims to evaluate efficacy of using a bismuth breast shield and optimized scanning parameter to reduce breast absorbed doses from CT thorax examination. Methods: Five protocols comprising the standard CT thorax clinical protocol (CP1) and four modified protocols (CP2 to CP5) were applied in anthropomorphic phantom scans. The phantom was configured as a female by placing a breast component on the chest. The breast component was divided into four quadrants, where 2 thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD-100) were inserted into each quadrant to measure the absorbed dose. The bismuth shield was placed over the breast component during CP4 and CP5 scans. Results: The pattern of absorbed doses in each breast and quadrant were approximately the same for all protocols, where the 4th quadrant > 3rd quadrant > 2nd quadrant > 1st quadrant. The mean absorbed dose value in CP3 was reduced to almost 34% of CP1's mean absorbed dose. It was reduced even lower to 15% of CP1's mean absorbed dose when the breast shield was used in CP5. Conclusion: This study showed that CT radiation exposure on the breast could be reduced by using a bismuth shield and low tube potential protocol without compromising the image quality
