Learning Boolean Halfspaces with Small Weights from Membership Queries
We consider the problem of proper learning a Boolean Halfspace with integer
weights from membership queries only. The best known
algorithm for this problem is an adaptive algorithm that asks
membership queries where the best lower bound for the number of membership
queries is [Learning Threshold Functions with Small Weights Using
Membership Queries. COLT 1999]
In this paper we close this gap and give an adaptive proper learning
algorithm with two rounds that asks membership queries. We also give
a non-adaptive proper learning algorithm that asks membership
queries
The art of spacecraft design: A multidisciplinary challenge
Actual design turn-around time has become shorter due to the use of optimization techniques which have been introduced into the design process. It seems that what, how and when to use these optimization techniques may be the key factor for future aircraft engineering operations. Another important aspect of this technique is that complex physical phenomena can be modeled by a simple mathematical equation. The new powerful multilevel methodology reduces time-consuming analysis significantly while maintaining the coupling effects. This simultaneous analysis method stems from the implicit function theorem and system sensitivity derivatives of input variables. Use of the Taylor's series expansion and finite differencing technique for sensitivity derivatives in each discipline makes this approach unique for screening dominant variables from nondominant variables. In this study, the current Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) aerodynamic and sensitivity derivative/optimization techniques are applied for a simple cone-type forebody of a high-speed vehicle configuration to understand basic aerodynamic/structure interaction in a hypersonic flight condition
ADULT LEARNING AND THE EFFECT OF EDUCATION AND GENDER INTERACTION ON TYPE 2 DIABETICS
A Dissertation Presented to The College of Graduate and Professional Studies, Department of Teaching and Learning at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana.
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy. The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to investigate whether the relationships between education and medication and healthy exercise adherence were the same among female and male Type 2 diabetic adult learners. The purpose included also exploring whether registered nurses would alter their approach to diabetic adult learners’ education on medication and healthy exercise adherence considering patients’ gender and education levels. The study also investigated the correlation between diabetes duration and medication and healthy exercise adherence. The research investigation employed mixed methods sequential explanatory design using qualitative data to help explain the quantitative findings. The quantitative study was based on preexisting data of 102 Type 2 diabetic adult learners collected by the researcher. The qualitative study was a phenomenological investigation based on semi-structured interviews of 10 registered nurses from Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
The research investigation suggested no significant interaction between gender and education levels regarding medication and healthy exercise adherence (respectively p = .746; p = .664). In contrast, the findings in the qualitative analyses suggested that the registered nurses would change their approach to patients’ education on medication adherence based on education levels, not gender. The nurses expressed also that healthy exercise adherence among Type 2 diabetic adults was individual based, i.e., education attainment and gender had no impact on patients’ healthy exercise adherence. The quantitative analyses also suggested an inverse correlation between how long Type two diabetic adult learners have been diagnosed with the disease and their healthy exercise adherence. The longer patients were diabetic the less they were adherent to healthy exercise routines.
The study recommended that more investigation on Type 2 diabetic adult learners would be useful to understand the impact of the interaction between gender and education attainment on medication and healthy exercise routines. The study suggested as well that future investigations should include larger sample sizes of study subjects and more representation of male Type 2 diabetic adult learners. They should as well include more representation of minority and young Type 2 diabetic populations. Moreover, this study suggested future investigations which include other groups of diabetes educators such as specialists from dietary and pharmacy professions
GLYCEMIC CONTROL AMONG TYPE 2 DIABETICS
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between diabetics’ socioeconomic status, self-efficacy, education levels, gender, and ethnicity and their medication and physical activity (i.e., healthy exercise) adherence regarding to their physicians and health educators’ counsels. Also, the study investigated whether or not the respondents adhered to medication prescription and physical activity routines. The study used a non-probability convenience sampling technique to recruit 102 type 2 diabetics (female, n = 65 and male, n = 37) from Indiana and Illinois Counties surrounding Vigo County, Indiana. The respondents reported their self-care activities throughout the seven days prior to completing the study questionnaire. A positive (direct) relationship between self-efficacy and healthy exercise, and a positive association between gender and self-efficacy were found (P < 0 .5). Besides, while the majority of the respondents adhered to medication treatment, nonetheless medication non-compliance level among the patients was alarming. Interventions that can boost patients’ confidence to successfully engage in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA)’s endorsed physical activity routines may be helpful. These interventions may include diabetes education follow-ups to improve patients’ self-efficacy scores (M = 4.73). Also, healthcare professionals may need to develop more operational plans to improve medication adherence levels among type two diabetics. Moreover, the present study suggests that diet and exercise treatments may be considered as potentials that can lead future success for blood glucose control among type 2 diabetics
Effects of Confomational Change on the Angiogenic Activty of Threonyl-tRNA Synthetase
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRs) have been known for their importance in protein synthesis. However, the Francklyn/Lounsbury lab discovered that some aaRs, like tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase and tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase are linked to angiogenesis. Recently, the lab discovered that threonyl-tRNA synthetase (TARS) was an angiogenic factor that is linked to ovarian cancer. Studies have shown that a derivative of macrolide inhibitor Borrelidin, known as BC194, inhibits TARS angiogenic and functional activity and altering TARS conformation. Sites of BC19 were found and used to generate mutated version of human TARS. Q566W and H388A TARS mutations were investigated to see whether induced conformational change or loss of aminoacyl-transferase activity is the key to inhibit angiogenic activity respectively. Q566W and H388A plasmids were generated using site-directed mutagenesis. The plasmids were expressed in Escherichia coli cells and purified using sonication, protamine sulfate salting, His6tag affinity chromatography and Hydroxyapatite chromatography. Purified mutants were found to have a molecular weight of 83kDa using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Following purification, TARS enzymes were applied to the in vitro tube assay using human umbilical vein endothelial cells to test angiogenic activity. Q566W promoted a similar number of pieces and branches as wild type TARS, while H388A had the greatest amount tube pieces, branches, and branching length. The study didn’t find a difference in angiogenic activity between the wild type and mutant TARS. However, the study shows that TARS has dose-dependent angiogenic activity and may link to α5β3 intergin migration signaling. More studies on angiogenic activity using integrin inhibitor dose response in vitro tube assay under TARS are needed to verify this mechanism

Effect of different salinity concentration on kidney of benni, Barbus sharpeyi
For this study, 144 healthy Barbus sharpeyi with an average weight of 350 ± 2.36 grams and length 25 ± 1.25 cm in five groups were studied. The first group as control located in municipal dechlorination water and the next four groups respectively were kept in salinity 4ppt, 8ppt, 12ppt and 16ppt in the same condition. On days 1 , 3 , 7 , 14 , 21 and 28 sample of kidney with maximum thickness of 0.5 cm prepare and were placed in bouin's solution. Then the standard method of parafin sections were done and 5- 6 micrometer thick of tissue sections prepared and stained with H&E methods. Results showed the gradual transfer of fish to water with high salinity caused obvious changes as increase the number and diameter of the glomeruli especially in high salinity but the severity was reduced at the end of the period (p<0.05). Also highest diameter and thickness of the collecting tubules were reported in fresh water at 28 days (p<0.05). These findings suggest that fish Barbus sharpeyi was friendly with salinity and ability to set vital to different salinity
The role of dietary nucleotide on energy sources and growth function of common carp, Cyprinus carpio
Considering the effects of dietary nucleotides on growth and metabolism, this study was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of this nutrient on the sources of the body needed energy, and growth performance of common carp. Fish with average (±SD) weight of 7.5±0.2g were fed to five levels of dietary nucleotides containing 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 percent for 8 weeks. Fish were fed 5 times daily according the satiation. After 56 days, the results showed that the level 0.2% nucleotide had the highest growth rate in terms of weight and length, but other parameters such as body weight, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio, differences were not significantly changed. Biochemical analysis of serum parameters and proximate analysis showed that the physiological function of fish affected by different levels of nucleotides whereas in the energy supply sources, including glucose, triacyleglycerol, total protein and albumin there were no significant difference in cholesterol and lipid content of carcass. This study conveys a positive effect on the biosynthesis of dietary nucleotides on energy sources and growth functions, while the common carp has ability to synthesize this substance into the body, the level of 0.2% in the diet can affection *Corresponding author sufficient effect on growth and some biochemical indices
