Differences in intention to use educational RSS feeds between Lebanese and British students: A multi‑group analysis based on the technology acceptance model
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) offers a means for university students to receive timely updates from virtual learning environments. However, despite its utility, only 21% of home students surveyed at a university in Lebanon claim to have ever used the technology. To investigate whether national culture could be an influence on intention to use RSS, the survey was extended to British students in the UK. Using the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) as a research framework, 437 students responded to a questionnaire containing four constructs: behavioral intention to use; attitude towards benefit; perceived usefulness; and perceived ease of use. Principle components analysis and structural equation modelling were used to explore the psychometric qualities and utility of TAM in both contexts. The results show that adoption was significantly higher, but also modest, in the British context at 36%. Configural and metric invariance were fully supported, while scalar and factorial invariance were partially supported. Further analysis shows significant differences between perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use across the two contexts studied. Therefore, it is recommended that faculty demonstrate to students how educational RSS feeds can be used effectively to increase awareness and emphasize usefulness in both contexts
Hematologic, hepatic, and renal function changes in hospitalized patients with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus
Background
There are no longitudinal data on the changes in hematologic, hepatic, and renal function findings in patients with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS‐CoV) infection.
Methods
This is a retrospective cohort study of 16 MERS‐CoV patients, to describe the hematological, hepatic, and renal findings of patients with MERS‐CoV.
Results
During the 21 days of observation, there was no significant change in the hepatic panel or creatinine tests. There was a significant increase in the mean ± SD of the white blood cell count from 8.3 ± 4.6 to 14.53 ± 7 (P value = 0.001) and an increase in mean ± SD of the absolute neutrophil count from 6.33 ± 4.2 to 12 ± 5.5 (P value = 0.015). Leukocytosis was observed in 31% (5/16) of the patients on day 1 and in 80% (4/5) on day 21. Transient leukopenia developed in 6% (1/16) of the patients on day 1 and in 13% (1/8) on day 8. None of the patients had neutropenia. Lymphopenia was a prominent feature with a rate of 44% (7/16) of the patients on day 1 and 60% (3/5) on day 21. Lymphocytosis was not a feature of MERS‐CoV infection. Thrombocytopenia developed in 31% (5/16) of the patients on day 1 and 40% (2/5) on day 21. Thrombocytosis was not a prominent feature and was observed in 6% (1/16) of the patients on day 1 and 17% (1/6) on day 9.
Conclusions
Patients with MERS‐CoV infection showed variable hematologic parameters over time. Lymphocytosis and neutropenia were not features of MERS‐CoV infection
Size Control in the Nanoprecipitation Process of Stable Iodine (127I) Using Microchannel Reactor—Optimization by Artificial Neural Networks
In this study, nanosuspension of stable iodine (127I) was prepared by nanoprecipitation process in microfluidic devices. Then, size of particles was optimized using artificial neural networks (ANNs) modeling. The size of prepared particles was evaluated by dynamic light scattering. The response surfaces obtained from ANNs model illustrated the determining effect of input variables (solvent and antisolvent flow rate, surfactant concentration, and solvent temperature) on the output variable (nanoparticle size). Comparing the 3D graphs revealed that solvent and antisolvent flow rate had reverse relation with size of nanoparticles. Also, those graphs indicated that the solvent temperature at low values had an indirect relation with size of stable iodine (127I) nanoparticles, while at the high values, a direct relation was observed. In addition, it was found that the effect of surfactant concentration on particle size in the nanosuspension of stable iodine (127I) was depended on the solvent temperature. © 2015, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists

Oxidative stress is increased in varicose veins. Many studies have implicated oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of infertility causing diseases of the female reproductive tract. The aim of this study was to determine whether varicocele can cause raised levels of reactive oxygen species and denaturation of mitochondrial structure in ovaries of female rats or not. In each experimental study, 15 weaning-age female rats were divided equally in 3 groups: Unilateral Varicose Vein (A), Sham (B) and Control (C) groups. Mitochondrial structure and malondialdehyde levels as a product of lipid peroxidation and Prooxidants-Antioxidants Balance were evaluated 60 days after intervention in proestrus stage. Comparisons between groups were made by the measured test. After 2 months, our results showed that mitochondrial structure ultra-structurally was denatured with histologic examination, malondialdehyde and prooxidants-antioxidants balance levels of left ovaries increased significantly in varicocele group compared to control and sham groups (P�0.05). In the right side, malondialdehyde increased significantly, but in prooxidantsantioxidants balance levels, there is no significant differences between groups. The data of control and sham groups were the same. These findings may support the concept that increased levels of malondialdehyde and PAB in varicocele may cause negative effects on fertility, so using antioxidants maybe useful. © 2015, International Journal of Morphology. Deformation behavior and processing map of ATI 425 with initial lamellar microstructure
The effect of hot compression temperatures and strain rates on deformation behavior and resultant microstructure of ATI 425 alloy with initial lamellar microstructure was investigated in this study. The temperature and strain rate of the hot compression test were chosen to be in the 700-1100 °C and 0.001-1 s-1 ranges, respectively. The stress-strain curve and microstructure evaluation show that the alloy's flow softening is associated with globularization and dynamic recrystallization mechanisms. The constitutive equation calculates the activation energy for the α/β and β regions to be 348 kJ/mol and 201 kJ/mol, respectively. Dynamic recovery and partial recrystallization are the dominant structure modification mechanisms in the beta single-phase region. Bending and fragmentation of alpha plates is the dominant mechanism of microstructure promotion in the α/β region at low temperatures and low strain rates, less than 0.1s-1. Local shear and alpha plate break-up are the main factors in structural modification at high strain rates, greater than 0.1s-1. The extracted process map at 0.5 strain revealed three zones: instability, safe zone, and peak zone, with power dissipation efficiencies of 0 -0.25%, 30-40%, and above 40%

Towards the acceptance of RSS to support learning: An empirical study to validate the technology acceptance model in Lebanon
Simpler is better. There are a lot of "needs" in e-Learning, and there's often a limit to the time, talent, and money that can be thrown at them individually. Contemporary pedagogy in technology and engineering disciplines, within the higher education context, champion instructional designs that emphasize peer instruction and rich formative feedback. However, it can be challenging to maintain student engagement outside the traditional classroom environment and ensure that students receive feedback in time to help them with ongoing assignments. The use of virtual learning platforms, such as Blackboard Learn, and web feed syndication, using technology such as Rich Site Summaries (RSS), can help overcome such challenges. However, during an initial pilot at an institution in Lebanon, only 21% of students reported making use of both these facilities. In this study, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used to guide the development of a scale to be used to investigate antecedents to the use of web feeds. The proposed scale was reviewed by 4 experts and piloted with 235 students. The collected data were analysed using structural equation modeling (SEM) technique based on AMOS methods. The results revealed adequate face, content, and construct validity. However, perceived ease of use was not a significant predictor of attitude towards use. Overall, the proposed model achieves acceptable fit and explains for 38% of its variance of which is lower than that of the original TAM. This suggests that aspects of the model may lack criterion validity in the Lebanese context. Consequently, it may be necessary to extend the scale by capturing additional moderators and predictors, such as cultural values and subjective norms. We concluded that the existence of RSS feeds in education improves significantly the content presented by the instructors to the e-learning user decreasing at the same time the size and access cost
Measuring process capability for bivariate non-normal process using the bivariate burr distribution
As is well known, process capability analysis for more than one quality variables is a complicated and sometimes contentious area with several quality measures vying for recognition. When these variables exhibit non-normal characteristics, the situation becomes even more complex. The aim of this paper is to measure Process Capability Indices (PCIs) for bivariate non-normal process using the bivariate Burr distribution. The univariate Burr distribution has been shown to improve the accuracy of estimates of PCIs for univariate non-normal distributions (see for example, [7] and [16]). Here, we will estimate the PCIs of bivariate non-normal distributions using the bivariate Burr distribution. The process of obtaining these PCIs will be accomplished in a series of steps involving estimating the unknown parameters of the process using maximum likelihood estimation coupled with simulated annealing. Finally, the Proportion of Non-Conformance (PNC) obtained using this method will be compared with those obtained from variables distributed under the bivariate Beta, Weibull, Gamma and Weibull-Gamma distributions
