The inventory of geological heritage of the state of São Paulo, Brazil: Methodological basis, results and perspectives
An inventory of geological sites based on solid and clear criteria is a first step for any geoconservation strategy. This paper describes the method used in the geoheritage inventory of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and presents its main results. This inventory developed by the geoscientific community aimed to identify geosites with scientific value in the whole state, using a systematic approach. All 142 geosites representative of 11 geological frameworks were characterised and quantitatively evaluated according to their scientific value and risk of degradation, in order to establish priorities for their future management. An online database of the inventory is under construction, which will be available to be easily consulted and updated by the geoscientific community. All data were made available to the State Geological Institute as the backbone for the implementation of a future state geoconservation strategy. The authors acknowledge the Science Without Borders Programme, Process 075/2012, which supported this study and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Process 2011/17261-6.
The volcanotectonic evolution of Flores Island, Azores (Portugal)
From the study and interpretation of the volcanic products and structures of Flores Island, we infer that its volcanic history was dominated by two major periods: (1) proto-insular volcanism, which includes all the submarine and emergent activities; and (2) insular volcanism, consisting exclusively of subaerial eruptions. The first period includes two phases: (1) the oldest (2.2 to 1.5 Ma) of shallow submarine volcanism; (2) the youngest (1.0 to 0.75 Ma) includes emergent volcanism. Throughout the second period, three volcanic stages are recognized: (1) the first one (0.7 to 0.5 Ma) includes the most voluminous volcanism, balanced between effusive and explosive events; (2) an intermediate stage (0.4 to 0.2 Ma) that involves a larger number of small-scale feeder centres, with effusive eruptions prevailing; (3) the third stage is the latest volcanic activity of the Island ([approximate] 0.003 Ma), with strombolian and subsequent phreatic and phreatomagmatic activity centred at four volcanic vents.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6VCS-4JXRX3V-2/1/de520353aea9d86efcc9b9a16c85585
Canal Preparation and Filling Techniques do not Influence the Fracture Resistance of Extensively Damaged Teeth
The purpose of this study was to assess the fracture resistance of extensively damaged teeth after two root canal preparation techniques (hand and rotary files) and after two filling techniques (active and passive compaction). Sixty-eight maxillary canines roots with an apical diameter equal to that of a #25 K-file were embedded in acrylic resin and the periodontal ligament was simulated by using a polyether impression material. The roots were randomly distributed into four groups (n=17): hand preparation and active compaction (HA), hand preparation and passive compaction (HP), rotary preparation and active compaction (RA), and rotary preparation and passive compaction (RP). All roots were restored with glass fiber post and metallic crown. The specimens were mechanically cycled (500,000 cycles, 45°, 37°C, 133 N, 2 Hz) and then subjected to a fracture resistance test. A single blinded examiner analyzed the external root surface and classified the failure pattern as favorable or unfavorable. The fracture resistance values ranged between 621.15 N (HP) and 785.71 N (HA). However, the Kruskal-Wallis test did not reveal differences in the fracture resistance values among the four groups (p =0.247). Under the tested conditions, root canal preparation and filling techniques had no influence on the fracture resistance of extensively damaged teeth restored with fiber post and metallic crown.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência à fratura de dentes amplamente destruídos após duas técnicas de preparo (limas manual e rotatória) e após duas técnicas obturadoras (compactação ativa e passiva).
The Effect of Experimental Denture Cleanser Solution Ricinus communis on Acrylic Resin Properties
This study evaluated heat-polymerized (HPR) and microwave-polymerized acrylic resins (MPR), after immersion in water, 1% hypochlorite and Ricinus communis solution (RC). Knoop hardness, color alteration, roughness and flexural strength tests were performed after obtaining the specimens and after time intervals of 15 (T15) and 183 (T183) days. Variations in data (Δ) were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (P = 0.05). For ΔT15 HPR there was greater variation in hardness when immersed in water (P = 0.00) and for MPR, after immersion in RC (P = 0.00). RC caused the greatest variation in roughness (P = 0.015). Color alteration was not significant (P = 24.46). Hypochlorite caused a decrease in flexural strength (P = 0.37). After ΔT183, hypochlorite and RC caused a decrease in HPR hardness value (P = 0.00). MPR showed the greatest variation in roughness (P = 0.01). HPR presented the most color alteration after immersion in RC (P = 0.214). Hypochlorite and RC caused the lowest flexural strength values for MPR (P = 0.89). RC caused alterations in resin properties, and was not shown to be superior to hypochlorite
