Secondary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis treated by lung transplant: A case report.
Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a pulmonary disease characterized by disruption of surfactant homeostasis resulting in its accumulation in the alveoli. PAP is classically classified into three categories (Table 1): 1/primary (or autoimmune) with antibodies targeting the GM-CSF pathway, 2/secondary to another disease, typically a hematologic malignancy, and 3/genetic.
A 30 year-old woman received an allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Within the first 6 months post HSCT, she developed an ocular, oral, digestive and hepatic graft-versus-host disease associated with a mixed ventilatory defect with a very severe obstructive syndrome and a severe CO diffusion impairment. High resolution computed tomography showed a classical "crazy paving" pattern. Aspect and differential cell count of BAL were normal. All microbiological samples remained culture negative. Histo-pathological analysis of transbronchial biopsies was unremarkable. Because of the severity of the respiratory insufficiency, open-lung biopsy (OBL) could not be performed. Despite multiple immunosuppressive therapies, lung function deteriorated rapidly; the patient also developed an excavated fungal lesion unresponsive to treatment. She underwent a bilateral lung transplant 48 months after HSCT. Histo-pathological analysis of explanted lungs showed obliterative bronchiolitis (OB), diffuse PAP and invasive cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis.
This case illustrates the simultaneous occurrence of OB, PAP and a fungal infection in a 30-year old female patient who underwent HSCT for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). To our knowledge this is the only documented case of PAP associated with OB treated by lung transplantation
CP Test in J/Psi -> gamma phi phi Decay
We propose to test CP symmetry in the decay \jp\to \gamma \phi\phi, for
which large data sample exists at BESII, and a data sample of
's will be collected with BESIII and CLEO-C program. We suggest some CP
asymmetries in this decay mode for CP test. Assuming that CP violation is
introduced by the electric- and chromo-dipole moment of charm quark, these CP
asymmetries can be predicted by using valence quark models. Our work shows a
possible way to get information about the electric- and chromo-dipole moment of
charm quark, which is little known. Our results show that with the current data
sample of , electric- and chromo-dipole moment can be probed at order
of . In the near future with a data sample, these
moments can be probed at order of .Comment: Misprints corrected. To appear in Phys. Lett.
Using untagged B^0 -> D K_S to determine gamma
It is shown that the weak phase gamma=arg(-V_{ud}V^*_{ub}V_{cb}V_{cd}^*) can
be determined using only untagged decays B/Bbar--> D K_S. In order to reduce
the uncertainty in gamma, we suggest combining information from B^{+-}-->
DK^{+-} and from untagged B^0 decays, where the D meson is observed in common
decay modes. Theoretical assumptions, which may further reduce the statistical
error, are also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, same as published versio
Near Threshold Enhancement of p pbar System and p pbar Elastic Scattering
The observed enhancement of -production near the threshold in
radiative decays of and -annihilations can be explained with
final state interactions among the produced system, where the
enhancement is essentially determined by elastic scattering
amplitudes. We propose to use an effective theory for interactions in a system near its threshold. The effective theory is similar to the well-known
one for interactions in a system but with distinctions. It is interesting
to note that in the effective theory some corrections to scattering amplitudes
at tree-level can systematically be summed into a simple form. These
corrections are from rescattering processes. With these corrected amplitudes we
are able to describe the enhancement near the threshold in radiative decays of
and -annihilations, and the elastic scattering near
the threshold.Comment: Discussions and References added, Fig.2 redrawn. Published version in

Role of Charm Factory in Extracting CKM-Phase Information via B --> DK
In this paper we study the impact of data that can be obtained from a Charm
Factory on the determination of the CKM parameter gamma from decays of the form
B -> D0 K where the D0 decays to specific inclusive and exclusive final states.
In particular, for each exclusive final state , the charm factory can
determine the strong phase difference between D0-> f and D0-bar -> f by
exploiting correlations in psi(3770)-> D0 D0-bar. This provides crucial input
to the determination of gamma via the interference of B+- -> K+- D0 -> f with
B+- -> K+- D0-bar -> f. We discuss how the method may be generalized to
inclusive final states and illustrate with a toy model how such methods may
offer one of the best means to determine gamma with 10^8-10^9 B-mesons.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Version 2: Fixed typos; add reference; Version

Observing Direct CP Violation in Untagged B-Meson Decays
Direct CP violation can exist in untagged B-meson decays to self-conjugate,
three-particle final states; it would be realized as a population asymmetry in
the untagged decay rate across the mirror line of the Dalitz plot of the
three-body decay. We explore the numerical size of this direct CP-violating
effect in a variety of B-meson decays to three pseudoscalar mesons; we show
that the resulting asymmetry is comparable to the partial rate asymmetry in the
analogous tagged decays, making the search for direct CP violation in the
untagged decay rate, for which greater statistics accrue, advantageous.Comment: 31 pages, REVTeX4, 1 eps figure, references added, typos corrected,

Model Independent Analysis of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry for the Decay
The sensitivity of the zero position of the forward backward asymmetry
for the exclusive
decay is examined by using most general non-standard 4-fermion interactions.
Our analysis shows that the zero position of the forward backward asymmetry is
very sensitive to the sign and size of the Wilson coefficients corresponding to
the new vector type interactions, which are the counter partners of the usual
Standard Model operators but have opposite chirality. In addition to these, the
other significant effect comes from the interference of Scalar-Pseudoscalar and
Tensor type operators. These results will not only enhance our theoretical
understanding about the axial vector mesons but will also serve as a good tool
to look for physics beyond the SM.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Published version that appears in EPJ
What can we learn from a measurement of sin(2 beta + gamma)?
The constraints on the value of the CKM phase gamma that may be achieved by
prospective measurements of sin(2 beta) and sin(2 beta + gamma) are discussed.
Significant constraints require quite small errors, and may depend on
assumptions about strong phases. The measurement of sin(2 beta + gamma)
combined with other experiments could provide valuable limits on new physics in
Bd-Bdbar mixing.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, RevTex 4, uses amsmath and graphic
