    Early Vegetation Development on an Exposed Reservoir: Implications for Dam Removal

    The 4-year drawdown of Horsetooth Reservoir, Colorado, for dam maintenance, provides a case study analog of vegetation response on sediment that might be exposed from removal of a tall dam. Early vegetation recovery on the exposed reservoir bottom was a combination of (1) vegetation colonization on bare, moist substrates typical of riparian zones and reservoir sediment of shallow dams and (2) a shift in moisture status from mesic to the xeric conditions associated with the pre-impoundment upland position of most of the drawdown zone. Plant communities changed rapidly during the first four years of exposure, but were still substantially different from the background upland plant community. Predictions from the recruitment box model about the locations of Populus deltoides subsp. monilifera (plains cottonwood) seedlings relative to the water surface were qualitatively confirmed with respect to optimum locations. However, the extreme vertical range of water surface elevations produced cottonwood seed regeneration well outside the predicted limits of drawdown rate and height above late summer stage. The establishment and survival of cottonwood at high elevations and the differences between the upland plant community and the community that had developed after four years of exposure suggest that vegetation recovery following tall dam removal will follow a trajectory very different from a simple reversal of the response to dam construction, involving not only long time scales of establishment and growth of upland vegetation, but also possibly decades of persistence of legacy vegetation established during the reservoir to upland transition

    Efflux in Fungi: La Pièce de Résistance

    Pathogens must be able to overcome both host defenses and antimicrobial treatment in order to successfully infect and maintain colonization of the host. One way fungi accomplish this feat and overcome intercellular toxin accumulation is efflux pumps, in particular ATP-binding cassette transporters and transporters of the major facilitator superfamily. Members of these two superfamilies remove many toxic compounds by coupling transport with ATP hydrolysis or a proton gradient, respectively. Fungal genomes encode a plethora of members of these families of transporters compared to other organisms. In this review we discuss the role these two fungal superfamilies of transporters play in virulence and resistance to antifungal agents. These efflux transporters are responsible not only for export of compounds involved in pathogenesis such as secondary metabolites, but also export of host-derived antimicrobial compounds. In addition, we examine the current knowledge of these transporters in resistance of pathogens to clinically relevant antifungal agents

    Mediterranean-climate streams and rivers: geographically separated but ecologically comparable freshwater systems

    Streams and rivers in mediterranean-climate regions (med-rivers in med-regions) are ecologically unique, with flow regimes reflecting precipitation patterns. Although timing of drying and flooding is predictable, seasonal and annual intensity of these events is not. Sequential flooding and drying, coupled with anthropogenic influences make these med-rivers among the most stressed riverine habitat worldwide. Med-rivers are hotspots for biodiversity in all med-regions. Species in med-rivers require different, often opposing adaptive mechanisms to survive drought and flood conditions or recover from them. Thus, metacommunities undergo seasonal differences, reflecting cycles of river fragmentation and connectivity, which also affect ecosystem functioning. River conservation and management is challenging, and trade-offs between environmental and human uses are complex, especially under future climate change scenarios. This overview of a Special Issue on med-rivers synthesizes information presented in 21 articles covering the five med-regions worldwide: Mediterranean Basin, coastal California, central Chile, Cape region of South Africa, and southwest and southern Australia. Research programs to increase basic knowledge in less-developed med-regions should be prioritized to achieve increased abilities to better manage med-rivers

    Ecological genetics of inbreeding, outbreeding and immunocompetence in Ranid frogs

    Using artificial fertilization, I crossed frogs from different populations to evaluate fitness consequences for the offspring from an inbreeding-outbreeding perspective, and to evaluate quantitative genetic effects on immunocompetence against a fungal pathogen (Saprolegnia). Crosses between closely situated populations of different sizes generated contrasting results for the effects of outbreeding on offspring traits between populations and life history stages, emphasizing the importance of epistatic effects and the difficulties of relying on generalizations when making conservation decisions (e.g., regarding translocations). Experimental infection of frog eggs from six populations with Saprolegnia fungus showed a significant family effect on the degree of infection of eggs and embryos, in particular at lower fertilization success and with a significant temperature × population interaction effect. A paternal genetic effect on fungus resistance was found using a half-sib split design. Furthermore, relatively more eggs were infected when fertilized by sperm from the same, in contrast with a different population. However, there was no evidence for a stronger effect in isolated island populations. Although the mechanistic underpinnings remain unknown, these results suggest substantial levels of genetic variation in resistance to Saprolegnia in natural populations within and among populations. We also found that pre-hatching exposure to Saprolegnia dramatically reduced the size at metamorphosis in the absence of further exposure to the fungus, possible as a delayed effect of impaired embryonic development. However, in contrast to some other amphibians, induced hatching in response to Saprolegnia could not be confirmed. In conclusion, the results suggest that frog populations are genetically diverse even at small geographic scale with frequently strong and unpredictable consequences of in- and outbreeding for the response to stressors

    An Historical and Ethnographic Study of Cultural Change and Continuity in the Construction and Use of Vernacular Watercraft in the Tanga Region , Tanzania

    "As global technology and corresponding security risks ever expand , traditional lifeways and archaic maritime landscapes are placed in ever greater danger of extinction. Within the Tanga region of Tanzania , numerous maritime populations face both social and cultural pressures that threaten their means of survival and the foundations of their collective identity. Ocean and riverine communities like Pangani , a nineteenth-century slave trade seaport and terminus for inland caravan routes , as well as rural villages such as Tongoni , Mwarongo , and Saadani still utilize indigenous watercraft like dhows and outriggers. These boats are integral to contemporary trade , tourism , and consumerism , as well as smuggling. This thesis investigates the boat design history , current building practices , and the broader socio-economic influences and context of these iconic Tanzanian watercraft. The theoretical basis for the research of craft design evolution centers around the concepts of the ""independent peasantry"" , World Systems Theory , and the Annales School of historical thought. Ethnographic data sets include interviews with boat builders and village elders. This is supplemented with archaeological documentation techniques of boat design features and local maritime material culture. Primary historical sources include colonial European narratives , anthropological studies of locations of trade , boat building and repair activities , and modern socio-economic analyses. The thesis integrates these interdisciplinary data sets with a view to understanding historical trends in cultural change and continuity in traditional boat design to decipher whether any evidence exists of German or British colonial influence. The ethnographic , historic , and archaeological data collected during the research expedition suggest that no significant European colonial design influence is evident in modern Tanzanian vernacular watercraft within the Tanga Region. The major factors influencing the dismissal of any European design inclusion reflect the horrific treatment experienced by the indigenous peoples under colonial rule , the continuance of the independent peasantry as a socioeconomic entity , the use of what resources are available to ensure survival , the dismissal of expensive and unnecessary modern construction technologies , and the communal protection of traditional lifeways as a cultural schema.
