EIT and diffusion of atomic coherence
We study experimentally the effect of diffusion of Rb atoms on
Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a buffer gas vapor cell. In
particular, we find that diffusion of atomic coherence in-and-out of the laser
beam plays a crucial role in determining the EIT resonance lineshape and the
stored light lifetime.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure
Atomic-scale combination of germanium-zinc nanofibers for structural and electrochemical evolution
Alloys are recently receiving considerable attention in the community of rechargeable batteries as possible alternatives to carbonaceous negative electrodes; however, challenges remain for the practical utilization of these materials. Herein, we report the synthesis of germanium-zinc alloy nanofibers through electrospinning and a subsequent calcination step. Evidenced by in situ transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy characterizations, this one-dimensional design possesses unique structures. Both germanium and zinc atoms are homogenously distributed allowing for outstanding electronic conductivity and high available capacity for lithium storage. The as-prepared materials present high rate capability (capacity of similar to 50% at 20 C compared to that at 0.2 C-rate) and cycle retention (73% at 3.0 C-rate) with a retaining capacity of 546 mAh g(-1) even after 1000 cycles. When assembled in a full cell, high energy density can be maintained during 400 cycles, which indicates that the current material has the potential to be used in a large-scale energy storage system
Advantageous grain boundaries in iron pnictide superconductors
High critical temperature superconductors have zero power consumption and
could be used to produce ideal electric power lines. The principal obstacle in
fabricating superconducting wires and tapes is grain boundaries-the
misalignment of crystalline orientations at grain boundaries, which is
unavoidable for polycrystals, largely deteriorates critical current density.
Here, we report that High critical temperature iron pnictide superconductors
have advantages over cuprates with respect to these grain boundary issues. The
transport properties through well-defined bicrystal grain boundary junctions
with various misorientation angles (thetaGB) were systematically investigated
for cobalt-doped BaFe2As2 (BaFe2As2:Co) epitaxial films fabricated on bicrystal
substrates. The critical current density through bicrystal grain boundary
(JcBGB) remained high (> 1 MA/cm2) and nearly constant up to a critical angle
thetac of ~9o, which is substantially larger than the thetac of ~5o for YBCO.
Even at thetaGB > thetac, the decay of JcBGB was much smaller than that of
YBCO.Comment: to appear in Nature Communication
Spin chirality on a two-dimensional frustrated lattice
The collective behavior of interacting magnetic moments can be strongly
influenced by the topology of the underlying lattice. In geometrically
frustrated spin systems, interesting chiral correlations may develop that are
related to the spin arrangement on triangular plaquettes. We report a study of
the spin chirality on a two-dimensional geometrically frustrated lattice. Our
new chemical synthesis methods allow us to produce large single crystal samples
of KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2, an ideal Kagome lattice antiferromagnet. Combined
thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements reveal that the phase
transition to the ordered ground-state is unusual. At low temperatures,
application of a magnetic field induces a transition between states with
different non-trivial spin-textures.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Characterization of kinetic and kinematic parameters for wearable robotics
The design process of a wearable robotic device for human assistance requires the characterization of both kinetic and kinematic parameters (KKP) of the human joints. The first step in this process is to extract the KKP from different gait analyses studies. This work is based on the human lower limb considering the following activities of daily living (ADL): walking over ground, stairs ascending/descending, ramp ascending/descending and chair standing up. The usage of different gait analyses in the characterization process, causes the data to have great variations from one study to another. Therefore, the data is graphically represented using Matlab® and Excel® to facilitate its assessment. Finally, the characterization of the KKP performed was proved to be useful in assessing the data reliability by directly comparing all the studies between each other; providing guidelines for the selection of actuator capacities depending on the end application; and highlighting optimization opportunities such as the implementation of agonist-antagonist actuators for particular human joints
The validity of using ICD-9 codes and pharmacy records to identify patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Background: Administrative data is often used to identify patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet the validity of this approach is unclear. We sought to develop a predictive model utilizing administrative data to accurately identify patients with COPD.
Methods: Sequential logistic regression models were constructed using 9573 patients with postbronchodilator spirometry at two Veterans Affairs medical centers (2003-2007). COPD was defined as: 1) FEV1/FVC <0.70, and 2) FEV1/FVC < lower limits of normal. Model inputs included age, outpatient or inpatient COPD-related ICD-9 codes, and the number of metered does inhalers (MDI) prescribed over the one year prior to and one year post spirometry. Model performance was assessed using standard criteria.
Results: 4564 of 9573 patients (47.7%) had an FEV1/FVC < 0.70. The presence of ≥1 outpatient COPD visit had a sensitivity of 76% and specificity of 67%; the AUC was 0.75 (95% CI 0.74-0.76). Adding the use of albuterol MDI increased the AUC of this model to 0.76 (95% CI 0.75-0.77) while the addition of ipratropium bromide MDI increased the AUC to 0.77 (95% CI 0.76-0.78). The best performing model included: ≥6 albuterol MDI, ≥3 ipratropium MDI, ≥1 outpatient ICD-9 code, ≥1 inpatient ICD-9 code, and age, achieving an AUC of 0.79 (95% CI 0.78-0.80).
Conclusion: Commonly used definitions of COPD in observational studies misclassify the majority of patients as having COPD. Using multiple diagnostic codes in combination with pharmacy data improves the ability to accurately identify patients with COPD.Department of Veterans Affairs, Health Services Research and Development (DHA), American Lung Association (CI- 51755-N) awarded to DHA, the American Thoracic Society Fellow Career Development AwardPeer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/84155/1/Cooke - ICD9 validity in COPD.pd
Forecasting future Humphrey Visual Fields using deep learning
Purpose
To determine if deep learning networks could be trained to forecast future 24–2 Humphrey
Visual Fields (HVFs).
Methods
All data points from consecutive 24–2 HVFs from 1998 to 2018 were extracted from a university
database. Ten-fold cross validation with a held out test set was used to develop the
three main phases of model development: model architecture selection, dataset combination
selection, and time-interval model training with transfer learning, to train a deep learning
artificial neural network capable of generating a point-wise visual field prediction. The pointwise
mean absolute error (PMAE) and difference in Mean Deviation (MD) between predicted
and actual future HVF were calculated.
Results
More than 1.7 million perimetry points were extracted to the hundredth decibel from 32,443
24–2 HVFs. The best performing model with 20 million trainable parameters, CascadeNet-
5, was selected. The overall point-wise PMAE for the test set was 2.47 dB (95% CI: 2.45 dB
to 2.48 dB), and deep learning showed a statistically significant improvement over linear
models. The 100 fully trained models successfully predicted future HVFs in glaucomatous
eyes up to 5.5 years in the future with a correlation of 0.92 between the MD of predicted and
actual future HVF and an average difference of 0.41 dB.
Conclusions
Using unfiltered real-world datasets, deep learning networks show the ability to not only
learn spatio-temporal HVF changes but also to generate predictions for future HVFs up to
5.5 years, given only a single HVF
New Fe-based superconductors: properties relevant for applications
Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity
in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe
layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics
with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the
layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On
the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and
their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend
on the level of doping, the supposed order parameter symmetry is s wave, thus
in principle not so detrimental to current transmission across grain
boundaries. From the application point of view, the main efforts are still
devoted to investigate the superconducting properties, to distinguish intrinsic
from extrinsic behaviours and to compare the different families in order to
identify which one is the fittest for the quest for better and more practical
superconductors. The 1111 family shows the highest Tc, huge but also the most
anisotropic upper critical field and in-field, fan-shaped resistive transitions
reminiscent of those of cuprates, while the 122 family is much less anisotropic
with sharper resistive transitions as in low temperature superconductors, but
with about half the Tc of the 1111 compounds. An overview of the main
superconducting properties relevant to applications will be presented. Upper
critical field, electronic anisotropy parameter, intragranular and
intergranular critical current density will be discussed and compared, where
possible, across the Fe-based superconductor families
