Relationships between paranoid thinking, self-esteem and the menstrual cycle.

This study aimed to investigate whether paranoid experiences and levels of self-esteem fluctuate over the menstrual cycle and whether levels of self-esteem are lower when perceived persecution is felt to be deserved. Measures of anxiety, depression, persecution, deservedness and self-esteem were completed on-line by 278 women over their menstrual cycle. Responses were compared at the paramenstrual (3 days before and after menses onset) and mid-cycle phase. At the paramenstrual phase persecution, negative self-esteem, anxiety and depression were higher and positive self-esteem was lower than at mid-cycle. A greater proportion of women experienced persecution as deserved at the paramenstrual phase. This was associated with higher depression and negative self-esteem scores. Increased levels of deservedness significantly strengthened the relationship between persecution and negative, but not positive, self-esteem. These findings suggest that the paramenstrual phase is a time of vulnerability to increased paranoid experiences, an increased likelihood that feelings of persecution will feel deserved and lowered self-esteem. The findings support the view that interpersonal sensitivities may be key to menstrual cycle symptoms and have an impact on relationships. Further, the study illustrated that ideas developed for psychosis could make a valuable contribution to understanding and managing this aspect of menstruation-related distress

The Use of Herbal Medications and Dietary Supplements by People with Mental Illness

This study examined the relationship between herbal medication and dietary supplement (HMDS) use and mental health characteristics. Data are drawn from a national household survey of the United States’ civilian, non-institutionalized population (N = 9,585). Psychiatric medication and HMDS use, psychiatric diagnoses and treatment needs, utilization and satisfaction were assessed. Compared to non-users, HMDS users were more likely to perceive themselves as having mental health needs, to have received mental health and primary care treatment, and to be dissatisfied with their overall healthcare. Psychiatric medication use was not related to HMDS use, and in multivariate analyses, HMDS use was associated with perceived mental health needs. Differences in use of specific HMDS between those with and without a psychiatric disorder were also examined. The use of HMDS warrants particular attention in persons with perceived mental health problems as these individuals may be turning to HMDS use for treatment of their symptoms

Experimental and numerical exploration of intrinsic localized modes in an atomic lattice

    Get PDF
This review focuses attention on the experimental studies of intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) produced in driven atomic lattices. Production methods involve the application of modulational instability under carefully controlled conditions. One experimental approach is to drive the atomic lattice far from equilibrium to produce ILMs, the second is to apply a driver of only modest strength but nearby in frequency to a plane wave mode so that a slow transformation from large amplitude standing waves to ILMs takes place. Since, in either case, the number of ILMs produced is small, the experimental observation tool appropriate for this task is four-wave mixing. This nonlinear detection technique makes use of the nonlinearity associated with an ILM to enhance its signal over that produced by the more numerous, but linear, spin waves. The final topic deals with numerical simulations of a nonlinear nanoscale atomic lattice where the new feature is running ILMs
