The Vicinity of the Galactic Supergiant B[e] Star CPD-57\deg2874 from Near- and Mid-IR Long Baseline Spectro-Interferometry with the VLTI (AMBER and MIDI)

The final version is available from ASP via the link in this record.We present the first spectro-interferometric observations of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of a B[e] supergiant (CPD−57°2874), performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) using the beam-combiner instruments AMBER (near-IR interferometry with three 8.3 m Unit Telescopes or UTs) and MIDI (mid-IR interferometry with two UTs). Our observations of the CSE are well fitted by an elliptical Gaussian model with FWHM diameters varying linearly with wavelength. Typical diameters measured are ≅ 1.8 × 3.4 mas or ≅ 4.5×8.5 AU (adopting a distance of 2.5 kpc) at 2.2 μm, and ≅ 12×15 mas or ≅ 30 × 38 AU at 12 μm. We show that a spherical dust model reproduces the SED but it underestimates the MIDI visibilities, suggesting that a dense equatorial disk is required to account for the compact dust-emitting region observed. Moreover, the derived major-axis position angle in the mid-IR (≅ 144°) agrees well with previous polarimetric data, hinting that the hot-dust emission originates in a disk-like structure. Energy- and flux-budget (EFB) turbulence closure model for the stably stratified flows. Part I: Steady-state, homogeneous regimes
We propose a new turbulence closure model based on the budget equations for
the key second moments: turbulent kinetic and potential energies: TKE and TPE
(comprising the turbulent total energy: TTE = TKE + TPE) and vertical turbulent
fluxes of momentum and buoyancy (proportional to potential temperature).
Besides the concept of TTE, we take into account the non-gradient correction to
the traditional buoyancy flux formulation. The proposed model grants the
existence of turbulence at any gradient Richardson number, Ri. Instead of its
critical value separating - as usually assumed - the turbulent and the laminar
regimes, it reveals a transition interval, 0.1< Ri <1, which separates two
regimes of essentially different nature but both turbulent: strong turbulence
at Ri<<1; and weak turbulence, capable of transporting momentum but much less
efficient in transporting heat, at Ri>1. Predictions from this model are
consistent with available data from atmospheric and lab experiments, direct

Boundary Conditions and Unitarity: the Maxwell-Chern-Simons System in AdS_3/CFT_2
We consider the holography of the Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) system
in Lorentzian three-dimensional asymptotically-AdS spacetimes, and discuss a
broad class of boundary conditions consistent with conservation of the
symplectic structure. As is well-known, the MCS theory contains a massive
sector dual to a vector operator in the boundary theory, and a topological
sector consisting of flat connections dual to U(1) chiral currents; the
boundary conditions we examine include double-trace deformations in these two
sectors, as well as a class of boundary conditions that mix the vector
operators with the chiral currents. We carefully study the symplectic product
of bulk modes and show that almost all such boundary conditions induce
instabilities and/or ghost excitations, consistent with violations of unitarity

General framework for estimating the ultimate precision limit in noisy quantum-enhanced metrology
The estimation of parameters characterizing dynamical processes is central to
science and technology. The estimation error changes with the number N of
resources employed in the experiment (which could quantify, for instance, the
number of probes or the probing energy). Typically, it scales as 1/N^(1/2).
Quantum strategies may improve the precision, for noiseless processes, by an
extra factor 1/N^(1/2). For noisy processes, it is not known in general if and
when this improvement can be achieved. Here we propose a general framework for
obtaining attainable and useful lower bounds for the ultimate limit of
precision in noisy systems. We apply this bound to lossy optical interferometry
and atomic spectroscopy in the presence of dephasing, showing that it captures
the main features of the transition from the 1/N to the 1/N^(1/2) behaviour as
N increases, independently of the initial state of the probes, and even with

HPV infection and immunochemical detection of cell-cycle markers in verrucous carcinoma of the penis
Penile verrucous carcinoma is a rare disease and little is known of its aetiology or pathogenesis. In this study we examined cell-cycle proteins expression and correlation with human papillomavirus infection in a series of 15 pure penile verrucous carcinomas from a single centre. Of 148 penile tumours, 15 (10%) were diagnosed as pure verrucous carcinomas. The expression of the cell-cycle-associated proteins p53, p21, RB, p16INK4A and Ki67 were examined by immunohistochemistry. Human papillomavirus infection was determined by polymerase chain reaction to identify a wide range of virus types. The expression of p16INK4A and Ki67 was significantly lower in verrucous carcinoma than in usual type squamous cell carcinoma, whereas the expression of p53, p21 and RB was not significantly different. p53 showed basal expression in contrast to usual type squamous cell carcinoma. Human papillomavirus infection was present in only 3 out of 13 verrucous carcinomas. Unique low-risk, high-risk and mixed viral infections were observed in each of the three cases. In conclusion, lower levels of p16INK4A and Ki67 expressions differentiate penile verrucous carcinoma from usual type squamous cell carcinoma. The low Ki67 index reflects the slow-growing nature of verrucous tumours. The low level of p16INK4A expression and human papillomavirus detection suggests that penile verrucous carcinoma pathogenesis is unrelated to human papillomavirus infection and the oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes classically altered by virus infection.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Background studies for the EDELWEISS dark matter experiment
The EDELWEISS-II collaboration has completed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using cryogenic Ge detectors (400 g each) and 384 kgdays of
effective exposure. A cross-section of pb is excluded at
90% C.L. for a WIMP mass of 85 GeV. The next phase, EDELWEISS-III, aims to
probe spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections down to a few
pb. We present here the study of gamma and neutron background
coming from radioactive decays in the set-up and shielding materials. We have
carried out Monte Carlo simulations for the completed EDELWEISS-II setup with
GEANT4 and normalised the expected background rates to the measured
radioactivity levels (or their upper limits) of all materials and components.
The expected gamma-ray event rate in EDELWEISS-II at 20-200 keV agrees with the
observed rate of 82 events/kg/day within the uncertainties in the measured
concentrations. The calculated neutron rate from radioactivity of 1.0-3.1
events (90% C.L.) at 20-200 keV in the EDELWEISS-II data together with the
expected upper limit on the misidentified gamma-ray events (), surface
betas (), and muon-induced neutrons (), do not contradict 5
observed events in nuclear recoil band. We have then extended the simulation
framework to the EDELWEISS-III configuration with 800 g crystals, better
material purity and additional neutron shielding inside the cryostat. The
gamma-ray and neutron backgrounds in 24 kg fiducial mass of EDELWEISS-III have
been calculated as 14-44 events/kg/day and 0.7-1.4 events per year,
respectively. The results of the background studies performed in the present
work have helped to select better purity components and improve shielding in
EDELWEISS-III to further reduce the expected rate of background events in the

Quantum dynamics in strong fluctuating fields
A large number of multifaceted quantum transport processes in molecular
systems and physical nanosystems can be treated in terms of quantum relaxation
processes which couple to one or several fluctuating environments. A thermal
equilibrium environment can conveniently be modelled by a thermal bath of
harmonic oscillators. An archetype situation provides a two-state dissipative
quantum dynamics, commonly known under the label of a spin-boson dynamics. An
interesting and nontrivial physical situation emerges, however, when the
quantum dynamics evolves far away from thermal equilibrium. This occurs, for
example, when a charge transferring medium possesses nonequilibrium degrees of
freedom, or when a strong time-dependent control field is applied externally.
Accordingly, certain parameters of underlying quantum subsystem acquire
stochastic character. Herein, we review the general theoretical framework which
is based on the method of projector operators, yielding the quantum master
equations for systems that are exposed to strong external fields. This allows
one to investigate on a common basis the influence of nonequilibrium
fluctuations and periodic electrical fields on quantum transport processes.
Most importantly, such strong fluctuating fields induce a whole variety of
nonlinear and nonequilibrium phenomena. A characteristic feature of such
