Fluid intake of Latin American children and adolescents: results of four 2016 LIQ.IN 7 National Cross-Sectional Surveys
Purpose: The primary aim of this survey was to report total fluid intake (TFI) and different fluid types for children (4–9 years) and adolescents (10–17 years) in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The second aim was to compare TFI with the adequate intake (AI) of water from fluids as recommended by the USA Institute of Medicine. Methods: Data were collected using a validated liquid intake 7-day record (Liq.In7). Participants’ characteristics, including age, sex and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Results: A total of 733 children and 933 adolescents were recruited. Over 75% of children in Uruguay met the IOM’s recommended intake. Fewer children in Argentina (64–72%) and Brazil (41–50%) obtained AI and the lowest values were recorded in Mexico (33–44%), where 16% of boys and 14% girls drank 50% or less of the AI. More adolescents in Argentina (42%) met the AIs than other countries; the lowest was in Mexico (28%). Children and adolescents in Mexico and Argentina drank more sugar sweetened beverages than water. Conclusions: Large numbers of children and adolescents did not meet AI recommendations for TFI, raising concerns about their hydration status and potential effects on mental and physical well-being. Given the negative effects on children’s health, the levels of SSB consumption are worrying
Fluid intake of Latin American adults: results of four 2016 Liq.In7 national cross-sectional surveys
Purpose: To report total fluid intake (TFI) and the intake of different fluid types in adults (= 18 years old) from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. To compare intakes between countries and with recommended adequate intake (AI) of water from fluids. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected using a validated liquid intake 7-day record (Liq.In7) in populations from Argentina (n = 1089), Brazil (n = 477), Mexico (n = 1677) and Uruguay (n = 554). Population characteristics, including age, gender, body mass index and socioeconomic level were recorded. Mean TFI was compared with the AI of water from fluids set by the USA Institute of Medicine. Results: The lowest TFI was recorded in Mexican women (1748 mL/day) and the highest in Argentinean men (2318 mL/day). Median daily TFI was significantly different between countries; Uruguay and Argentina had higher values than Mexico and Brazil. In the former, plain water contributed to only 25% of TFI, the remainder being predominantly from hot beverages. Approximately, a third of adults did not drink enough fluid to meet the recommended AI. High SSB consumption was reported, which was significantly different between countries (p < 0.05), the highest being in Mexico (median 25–75th percentiles): 531 (300–895 mL/day. Conclusions: This survey highlights the need to increase water consumption and reduce SSB intake in this region to avoid potential associated health risks. These findings may be useful information in monitoring public health policy strategies
Use of Molecular Markers to Assist the Development of Inbred Lines under Open Field Conditions: the Case of Criollo Peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) from Mexico
[EN] Chile peppers are one of the most important crops in Mexico and a plethora of ecotypes can be found there. Most of them are ancient open-pollinated (OP) landraces selected by farmers for uniform phenotype but with an inherent level of genetic diversity, called criollos. In this work 15 pepper accessions, encompassing 2 criollo lines, their open-pollinated progenies, and 5 controls, were characterized with a set of 36 IPGRI descriptors and 23 SSR markers to assess the effect of open pollination in the inbreeding process. Heterozygosity levels were comprised between 12 and 47% in the progenies, which were similar or lower than those values from parent plants and similar or higher than control cultivars. Also, both progenies and parents showed similar levels of agronomic and morphological uniformity. Our results suggest that this OP program is efficient in terms of reaching enough agronomic uniformity in criollo Ancho peppers while preserving certain genetic diversity to confer adaptation to climate change.This work was partly financed by projects INIA RTA2013-00022-C02-02 and RTA2014-00041-C02-02, funded by Instituto Nacional Investigaciones Agrarias (Spain), FEDER funds. The population-level impact of Enterococcus faecalis genetics on intestinal colonization and extraintestinal infection
Enterococcus faecalis is a commensal bacterium of the human gastrointestinal tract that causes opportunistic infections. The E. faecalis genetic changes associated with pathogenicity, particularly gut-to-bloodstream translocation, remain poorly understood. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 736 whole-genome sequences of fecal and bloodstream E. faecalis isolates from hospitalized and nonhospitalized individuals, respectively, to identify E. faecalis genetic signatures associated with the patient’s hospitalization status and body isolation source. We found that infection by hospitalization status and extraintestinal infection are heritable traits, with ~40% and ~30% of their variation explained by E. faecalis genetics, respectively. Furthermore, a GWAS using linear mixed models did not pinpoint any clear overrepresentation of individual genetic changes by hospitalization status or body isolation source after controlling for the population structure. However, we observed elevated signals in a genomic region containing a prophage element. However, the lineages themselves and their associated virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes showed variable frequency among blood and fecal isolates and in hospitalized and nonhospitalized individuals. Altogether, our findings indicate that E. faecalis infection by hospitalization status and body sites is partially influenced by the overall genetic background of the isolates and antibiotic resistance patterns rather than genetic variation at individual loci, which suggests a greater role of other host and environmental factors and ultimately the opportunistic pathogenic lifestyle of this versatile host generalist bacterium. IMPORTANCE Enterococcus faecalis causes life-threatening invasive hospital- and community-associated infections that are usually associated with multidrug resistance globally. Although E. faecalis infections cause opportunistic infections typically associated with antibiotic use, immunocompromised immune status, and other factors, they also possess an arsenal of virulence factors crucial for their pathogenicity. Despite this, the relative contribution of these virulence factors and other genetic changes to the pathogenicity of E. faecalis strains remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether specific genomic changes in the genome of E. faecalis isolates influence its pathogenicity—infection of hospitalized and nonhospitalized individuals and the propensity to cause extraintestinal infection and intestinal colonization. Our findings indicate that E. faecalis genetics partially influence the infection of hospitalized and nonhospitalized individuals and the propensity to cause extraintestinal infection, possibly due to gut-to-bloodstream translocation, highlighting the potential substantial role of host and environmental factors, including gut microbiota, on the opportunistic pathogenic lifestyle of this bacterium
Pangenome-spanning epistasis and coselection analysis via de Bruijn graphs
Studies of bacterial adaptation and evolution are hampered by the difficulty of measuring traits such as virulence, drug resistance, and transmissibility in large populations. In contrast, it is now feasible to obtain high-quality complete assemblies of many bacterial genomes thanks to scalable high-accuracy long-read sequencing technologies. To exploit this opportunity, we introduce a phenotype- and alignment-free method for discovering coselected and epistatically interacting genomic variation from genome assemblies covering both core and accessory parts of genomes. Our approach uses a compact colored de Bruijn graph to approximate the intragenome distances between pairs of loci for a collection of bacterial genomes to account for the impacts of linkage disequilibrium (LD). We demonstrate the versatility of our approach to efficiently identify associations between loci linked with drug resistance and adaptation to the hospital niche in the major human bacterial pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis

Acoustic Diagnostics of Electrical Origin Fault Modes with Readily Available Consumer-Grade Sensors
Acoustic diagnostics, traditionally associated with mechanical fault modes, can potentially solve a wider range of monitoring applications. Typically, fault modes are induced purposefully by the researcher through physical component damage whilst the system is shutdown. This paper presents low-cost real-time fault diagnostics of a previously unreported acute electrical origin fault that manifests sporadically during system operation with no triggering intervention. A suitability study into acoustic measurements from readily available consumer-grade sensors for low-cost real-time diagnostics of audible faults, and a brief overview of the theory and configuration of the wavelet packet transform (including optimal wavelet selection methods) and empirical mode decomposition processing algorithms is also included. The example electrical origin fault studied here is an unpredictable current instability arising with the PWM-controller of a BrushLess DC motor. Experimental trials positively detect 99.9 % of the 1160 resultant high-bandwidth torque transients using acoustic measurements from a USB microphone and a smartphone. While the use of acoustic techniques for detecting emerging electrical origin faults remains largely unexplored, the techniques demonstrated here can be readily adopted for the prevention of catastrophic failure of drive and power electronic components
Effect of the Initial Stocking Body Weigth on Growth of Spotted Rose Snapper Lutjanus Guttatus (Steindachner, 1869) in Marine Floting Cages
Pargos lunarejos con pesos promedio de 24,5 ± 3,7 g, 55,4 ± 3,5 g y 110,2 ± 4,6 g fueron introducidos para su engorde en jaulas flotantes de 100 m3 por un lapso de 153 días en Santa Cruz de Miramar, Nayarit, México, con la finalidad de encontrar el peso más adecuado de cultivo. Los pargos fueron alimentados dos veces al día con alimento comercial conteniendo 35 y 25% de proteína cruda durante el primero a tercer mes y en el cuarto y quinto mes respectivamente. Durante el experimento, la temperatura del agua varió de 25,6 a 32,3ºC. Al final del experimento se obtuvo una supervivencia que fluctuó de 67,5 a 74,7%. Se determinaron, con base en el peso inicial, diferencias estadísticamente significativas (P&#8804;0,05) con respecto a la biomasa final cosechada. La máxima ganancia en peso promedio semanal fue de 12,8 g semana-1 en los organismos con el mayor peso inicial (110,2 ± 4,6 g). Esta información sugiere que la inclusión de pargos lunarejos con un peso de 110 g puede ser una buena estrategia para el engorde en jaulas flotantes
