Mott-insulator phases of non-locally coupled 1D dipolar Bose gases

We analyze the Mott-insulator phases of dipolar bosonic gases placed in neighboring but unconnected 1D traps. Whereas for short-range interactions the 1D systems are independent, the non-local dipole-dipole interaction induces a direct Mott-insulator to pair-superfluid transition which significantly modifies the boundaries of the lowest Mott-insulator phases. The lowest boundary of the lowest Mott regions becomes progressively constant as a function of the hopping rate, eventually inverting its slope, leading to a re-entrant configuration which is retained in 2D. We discuss the consequences of this effect on the spatial Mott-insulator plateaux in experiments with additional harmonic confinement, showing that anti-intuitively the plateaux may become wider for increasing hopping. Our results are also applicable to non-dipolar boson-boson mixtures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures; minor changes, reference adde

The control of state regional aids by the European competition policy and its effects on economic and social cohesion

The economic activity of the countries which make up the European Union (EU) is being profoundly affected by the advance in the process of integration. The consolidation of the Single European Market (SEM) and the process of transition towards Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) are two elements which affect the economic evolution of all of teh countries and regions of the EU. The impact of this greater economic integration is expected to be reflected with different intensity in each of them, according to their own economic structures and their capacity of adaptation to the necessary convergence. The effect of this process on the development of the regions, in itself already unequal, has caused growing concern about the reinforcement of economic and social cohesion within the EU, as was reflected in the Treaty of the European Union. In this way, the steps taken towards a growing integration are complemented by a greater development of structural policies. The reinforcement of these policies, and in particular of regional policy, confers special importance to the analysis of its instruments, above all, to that of the programs for regional economic incentives. Economic incentive programs constitute one of the most widely used tools of regional policy among the member nations of the EU. Given the fact that this assistance is aimed at companies, it is subject to meet Community regulations on competition and, at the same time, as a measure for regional development, play a role in the attainment of economic and social cohesion. In this paper the most important aspects of this last component will be analyzed in terms of regional assistance in order to then proceed to the study of its effects on the correction of interregional inequality.

For this research experiment our team was able to recruit and test 36 Miami Dade College Students, (13 Monolingual , 22 bilinguals, and one trilingual). Participants ranged in age from 18- 30 years old. The study is part a collaboration with Nova Southeastern University (NSU). By administering a series of multiple audio, visual, and verbal tests our team was able to compare cognitive functioning between the two samples. The battery of tests consisted of : The Nonverbal Stroop Card Sorting Test (NSCST), Bilingual Verbal Ability Test (BVAT), the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Shipley, and the N-BACK. We use language to express from the most basic forms of culture, communication, expression, and ideas to the most complex ones. Studies have shown that bilinguals brains work and even look differently than monolinguals, such as higher density of the brain’s grey matter (Fernandez, 2014) . As a Bilingual the brain undergoes higher development when you have to subconsciously translate and interpret multiple languages at once. Consequently, knowing two languages can result in slower responses. Depending on the type of bilingual, the person can get lost in translation and take longer to respond considering the dominant language interferes (Shook, 2012). In conclusion, our team will be testing both monolinguals and bilinguals to compare success rate in cognitive function

Participation in an Interprofessional Simulation Event: Impact on Student Learning

    Get PDF
Interprofessional education (IPE) is growing tremendously within numerous health care programs and continues to impact both healthcare professionals and patients. The significance of having IPE simulation events is to provide students with the ability to gain knowledge, awareness, and understanding of other disciplines. Focus groups following an IPE simulation event will allow for a better understanding of how these events potentially impact student learning, future learning outcomes, and knowledge of other professions. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of participation in an IPE simulation event on students\u27 perceptions. To examine this impact, a student focus group and a faculty focus group were conducted to examine the impact this event has on perceptions of learning, influences on teaching, and potential future experiences. At the conclusion of the student focus group, students demonstrated shared and gained knowledge, respect for other disciplines, the desire to advocate for multidisciplinary rounds, and collaborated while problem-solving. The faculty focus group reported observing students better understanding their roles, awareness and appreciation of other disciplines, and the importance of interprofessional collaboration. Altogether, these common themes found within both focus groups provide evidence that an IPE simulation event enhances successful improvement in student perceptions of IPE, future learning outcomes, and knowledge of other professions

Curriculum-Integrated Information Literacy (CIIL) in a Community College Nursing Program: A practical Model

This article describes a strategy to integrate information literacy into the curriculum of a nursing program in a community college. The model is articulated in four explained phases: preparatory, planning, implementation, and evaluation. It describes a collaborative process encouraging librarians to work with nursing faculty, driving students to acquire information literacy competencies, to use information resources as part of their learning process, and to be lifelong learners. The literature reviews the evolution of the concept of informatics in nursing practice and the different blueprints organized to attain information literacy competencies. It also describes studies that have included these competencies into nursing curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR

Association of dispositional optimism with Life\u27s Simple 7\u27s Cardiovascular Health Index: results from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Sociocultural Ancillary Study (SCAS)

OBJECTIVES: Mounting evidence links positive psychological functioning to restorative health processes and favourable medical outcomes. However, very little is known about the relationship between optimism, an indicator of psychological functioning and the American Heart Association (AHA)-defined concept of cardiovascular health (CVH), particularly in Hispanics/Latinos of diverse backgrounds. To address limitations of existing literature, this study investigated the association between dispositional optimism and CVH in a heterogeneous sample of Hispanics/Latinos residing in the USA. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were analysed from 4919 adults ages 18-75 of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos parent study and the Sociocultural Ancillary Study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Optimism was assessed using the 6-item Life Orientation Test-Revised (range from 6 to 30). AHA classification standards were used to derive an additive CVH score with operationalisation of indicators as Ideal, Intermediate and Poor. The overall CVH score included indicators of diet, body mass index, physical activity, cholesterol, blood pressure, fasting glucose and smoking status. Multivariate linear and logistic regressions were used to examine associations of optimism with CVH (Life\u27s Simple 7), after adjusting for sociodemographic factors and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Each increase in the optimism total score was associated with a greater CVH score (β=0.03 per unit increase, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.05). When modelling tertiles of optimism, participants with moderate (β=0.24 to 95% CI 0.06 to 0.42) and high (β=0.12, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.24) levels of optimism displayed greater CVH scores when compared with their least optimistic peers. CONCLUSION: This study offers preliminary evidence for an association between optimism and CVH in a large heterogeneous group of Hispanic/Latino adults. Our study adds scientific knowledge of psychological assets that may promote CVH and suggests a novel therapeutic target for consideration. Future studies are needed to explore causality and potential mechanism underlying the relationship between positive emotion and heart health

Program-Integrated Information Literacy (PIIL) in a Hospital\u27s Nursing Department: A Practical Model

This article provides a systematic description of a strategy to integrate information literacy into programs that support professional development in hospitals\u27 nursing departments. Four phases are explained: preparatory, planning, implementation, and evaluation. It suggests that librarians must go beyond the basic one-time instruction workshops to a collaborative model working with nursing management so that nurses and nursing students will use information resources as part of their learning process and obtain the needed skills to be information literate, users of evidence-based information, and life-long learners. The literature reviews the concept of informatics in nursing practice and some of the different programs set up to acquire information literacy competencies. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER
