The Availability Of Full Match Sibling Donors And Feasibility Of Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation In Brazil.

The feasibility of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (alloBMT) in a developing country has not yet been demonstrated. Many adverse factors including social and economic limitations may reduce the overall results of this complex and expensive procedure. Our objective was to characterize the most important clinical, social and economic features of candidates for transplantation and their potential donors as well as the influence of these factors on overall survival in a retrospective and exploratory analysis at a university hospital. From July 1993 to July 2001, candidates for BMT were referred to the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit by Hematology and Oncology Centers from several regions of Brazil. A total of 1138 patients were referred to us as candidates for alloBMT. Median age was 25 years (range: 2 months-60 years), 684 (60.1%) were males and 454 (39.9%) were females. The clinical indications were severe aplastic anemia and hematological malignancies. From the total of 1138 patients, 923 had HLA-typing; 497/923 (53.8%) candidates had full match donors; 352/1138 (30.8%) were eligible for alloBMT. Only 235 of 352 (66.7%) were transplanted. Schooling was 1st to 8th grade for 123/235 (52.3%); monthly family income ranged from US60(760 (7%) to more than US400 (36%). Overall survival for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, severe aplastic anemia and acute myeloid leukemia was 58, 60 and 30%, respectively. Thus, overall survival rates for the most frequent hematological diseases were similar to those reported in the International Registry, except for acute myeloid leukemia. This descriptive and exploratory analysis suggests the feasibility of alloBMT in a developing country like Brazil.36315-2

Handgrip strength and its dialysis determinants in hemodialysis patients

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate muscle function (MF) of patients on hemodialysis (HD) and to investigate the dialysis determinants of maximal voluntary handgrip strength (HGS).MethodsForty-three patients on HD (25 men, six diabetics, 54.5 ± 12.2 y of age, 62.2 ± 51.4 mo on dialysis) were studied. HGS was measured three times with a mechanical dynamometer (Jamar) before and after HD sessions on the non-fistula side and the highest value was used for analysis. HGS values lower than the 10th percentile of an age-, gender-, and region-specific reference were considered MF loss. Biochemical and dialysis variables (ultrafiltration, interdialytic body weight gain, urea clearance, urea before and after HD, systolic and diastolic blood pressures before and after HD, and difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressures) were also examined.ResultsThe HGS values before and after HD values were significantly higher in men but were not statistically different before and after the HD sessions (29.8 ± 10.3 and 30.2 ± 9.9 kg for men, 14.1 ± 7.0 and 14.5 ± 6.3 kg for women). MF loss was observed in 24 patients (55.8%), 12 women and 12 men. Dialysis variables were not different between patients with and without MF loss and did not correlate with HGS measured before or after an HD session.ConclusionsPatients using HD presented a high prevalence of MF loss as assessed by HGS, and it was not influenced by dialysis variables. HGS may be used as a reliable nutritional marker in HD, measured before or after HD sessions

    Get PDF

Three little pieces for computer and relativity

Numerical relativity has made big strides over the last decade. A number of problems that have plagued the field for years have now been mostly solved. This progress has transformed numerical relativity into a powerful tool to explore fundamental problems in physics and astrophysics, and I present here three representative examples. These "three little pieces" reflect a personal choice and describe work that I am particularly familiar with. However, many more examples could be made.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures. Plenary talk at "Relativity and Gravitation: 100 Years after Einstein in Prague", June 25 - 29, 2012, Prague, Czech Republic. To appear in the Proceedings (Edition Open Access). In vitro clonal behavior of Olea europaea L., variety Galega vulgar

    Get PDF
Clonal multiplication of olive variety Galega vulgar trough leafy steam cuttings is impeded by low rooting rates, according to some authors do not overcome 10% of success. Those situations originates imbalances between plant offer and market demand as well as higher prices of plants face others varieties. Micropropagation trough adventitious multiplication is a technical proceeding able for cloning recalcitrant woody plants. Trough rejuvenation of plants, rates of 100% in rooting is achieved. Using cuttings from adult trees of a clonal orchard of Galega vulgar in ESAS, previously and partially characterized for a) presence of virus; b) rooting rates of cuttings; c) olive oil yield, 39 clones where randomly introduced in vitro for an actual collection of 15 in vitro clones. Published papers concerning in vitro clonal behavior for olive or other species are rare, thus, this work presents the obtained results since 2003 for 1) introduction of clones; 2) systemic bacterioses control; 3) clonal variation in multiplication, rooting and acclimatizatio
