Características morfológicas e moleculares e acúmulo de proteína em grãos de variedades de arroz do Maranhão.

O grão de arroz apresenta baixos teores de proteína, mas contém glutelina, uma proteína de melhor qualidade para a alimentação humana do que a de outros cereais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar, por meio de descritores morfológicos e moleculares (RAPD), algumas variedades tradicionais de arroz do Estado do Maranhão que apresentam altos teores de proteínas nos grãos (mais de 10%) e são tolerantes ao estresse nutricional e ao Al tóxico. As 33 variedades estudadas foram separadas em cinco grupos baseados nas características morfológicas e quatro grupos utilizando marcadores RAPD, que não coincidiram entre si. Teores elevados de proteína no grão estavam presentes aleatoriamente em todos os grupos. No entanto, verificou-se maior acúmulo de proteína em plantas cujas sementes tinham uma menor relação comprimento/largura de grão.Título em inglês: Morphological and molecular traits and accumulation of grain protein in rice varieties from Maranhão, Brazil

Robust self-trapping of vortex beams in a saturable optical medium

We report the first observation of robust self-trapping of vortex beams propagating in a uniform condensed medium featuring local saturable self-focusing nonlinearity. Optical vortices with topological charge m=1, that remain self-trapped over ~ 5 Rayleigh lengths, are excited in carbon disulfide using a helical light beam at 532 nm and intensities from 8 to 10 GW/cm^2. At larger intensities, the vortex beams lose their stability, spontaneously breaking into two fragments. Numerical simulations based on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation including the three-photon absorption and nonpolynomial saturation of the refractive nonlinearity demonstrate close agreement with the experimental findings.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures,to be published in Phys. Sustainability of small reservoirs and large scale water availability under current conditions and climate change

Semi-arid river basins often rely on reservoirs for water supply. Small reservoirs may impact on large-scale water availability both by enhancing availability in a distributed sense and by subtracting water for large downstream user communities, e.g. served by large reservoirs. Both of these impacts of small reservoirs are subject to climate change. Using a case-study on North-East Brazil, this paper shows that climate change impacts on water availability may be severe, and impacts on distributed water availability from small reservoirs may exceed impacts on centralised water availability from large reservoirs. Next, the paper shows that the effect of small reservoirs on water availability from large reservoirs may be significant, and increase both in relative and absolute sense under unfavourable climate change

O efeito da norma subjetiva, percepção de controlo, atitude e experiência passada na intenção de compra de marcas de roupa de luxo no Brasil

SCIELO:S2182-84582014000300013 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science)The main goal of this study is to extend the theory of planned behaviour by introducing past experiences as antecedents of behavioural intentions and to test this model in the context of luxury consumption. In this vein, the Brazilian luxury market, more specifically in the São Paulo area, was selected due to its growing presence on the world stage of luxury products. Therefore, an online questionnaire was constructed based on a literature review, and data were collected. The findings suggest that attitude and perceived behaviour control are more important to explain word-of-mouth, whereas past experience, perceived behavioural control and subjective norms significantly impact willingness to pay more. The consumers most willing to pay more for a luxury brand are also more willing to continue to buy such brands in the near future
