First Lines of Schooling: Regius and Private Teachers in Brazil, 1759-1834

The article presents a brief overview of education in Brazil between 1759 and 1834. Delimited by the creation of the position of Regius teacher and by the decentralization promoted by the Additional Act of 1834, it discusses the process of state control, secularization, and promotion of schooling in the Portuguese America and the independent Brazil. Considering the regional characteristics of the colonial territory, the analyses carried out focus on the Capitania de Minas Gerais [Captaincy of Minas Gerais] because of its economic importance in the context of a “world economy”. The article provides a quantitative assessment of the schooling in various regions of Brazil and presents the profile of the teachers who worked in Mariana, Minas Gerais, contributing to the study of the first lines of school education in the Luso-Brazilian modernity

"Ver-me-ás folhear os grandes livros e decidir os pleitos": a leitura desvelada nos processos judiciais setecentistas

As investigações acerca das práticas de leitura esbarram em empecilhos que são próprios da natureza do objeto. A leitura quase não deixa indícios de sua atividade, o movimento dos olhos a decifrar os sinais gráficos não fica gravado no texto. Diante da natureza delével da leitura, Roger Charcier considera que o melhor método para o estudo das leituras é não recusar nenhuma das percepções que permitem reconstruir, pelo menos parcialmente, o que os leitores faziam das suas leituras. Neste sentido, a presente comunicação tratará de fontes ainda pouco exploradas, mas que podem contribuir na investigação das práticas de leitura na América portuguesa, quais sejam: as ações judiciais. Mais precisamente, serão analisados os processos criminais e cíveis que foram movidos em Mariana, Minas Gerais, em fins do século XVIII. Um dos objetivos da comunicação é apontar para as possibilidades e limites que as ações judiciais oferecem à investigação das práticas da leitura. Em um segundo momento, pretende-se apresentar o que os advogados faziam de suas leituras, os usos que davam às leituras nas ações judiciais. E, por fim, identificar possíveis diferenças nessas práticas, relacio­nando-as com a reforma pombalina da Universidade de Coimbra

O artigo apresenta um panorama crítico da produção sobre História da educação na América portuguesa. Discute as razões da escassez de trabalhos dedicados à História da educação na América portuguesa e apresenta algumas possibilidades abertas ao referido tema pela História cultural, com especial destaque para a História dos livros. A intenção é promover uma espécie de “suspensão na descrença” de se produzir estudos sobre a História da educação na América portuguesa face suas especificidades e suas relações com a História cultural.This paper presents a critical overview on the production of history of education in Portuguese America. It discusses the reasons for the scarcity of studies devoted to the history of education in Portuguese America and presents some possibilities on that issue opened through cultural history, with special emphasis on the history of books. The intention is to promote a kind of "suspension of disbelief" to produce studies on the history of education in Portuguese America facing their specificities and their relations with cultural history

O artigo analisa a constituição do campo jurídico português, no reinado de D. José I, que teve como Secretário do Reino Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, o Marquês de Pombal. Por um lado, investiga as mútuas implicações das forças reguladoras, expressas na reforma da Universidade de Coimbra e na fixação de novas diretrizes legais pela Lei da Boa Razão. De outro lado, trata da prática dos agentes da administração da justiça, mais especificamente, os de Mariana e Vila Rica, importantes centros da Capitania de Minas Gerais.This paper will analyze the establishment of the Portuguese legal system during the kingdom of D. Jose I, whose Secretary was Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal. On the one hand it will investigate mutual implications of regulatory forces, expressed by the reform of the University of Coimbra and on the fixation of new legal guidelines by the Law of Good Reason. On the other hand, it deals with the practice of legal administration agents, more specifically, those of Mariana and Vila Rica, important centers of Colonial Minas Gerais
