Design and evaluation of novel emulgel containing acyclovir for herpes simplex keratitis

    Get PDF
The objective of the present research was to develop acyclovir ophthalmic emulgels using different polymers such as Pluronic F 127 (PF 127), Gelrite, Carbopol 934P, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC K100M) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na CMC). The prepared emulgel formulations were subjected for in vitro characterization. All the prepared emulgels showed acceptable physical properties concerning color, homogeneity, consistency, pH value and osmolality. Water absorption studies of formulations containing pluronic F 127 showed lesser water absorption in comparison to other formulations. All the formulations showed shear thinning pseudo plastic behavior. The formulation containing pluronic F 127 of 22 % showed higher viscosity. No significant release difference was observed between in vitro release and ex vivo release using goat cornea. The rate of drug release from all the emulgels was found to be non fickian (anomalous) release. There was no macroscopic evidence of microbial growth in the media; hence it passes the test for sterility. Ocular irritation studies done on rabbits indicated that all formulations were non irritant and did not cause inflammation. Stability studies showed that the prepared emulgels remained unchanged upon storage for 3 months at refrigerated temperature (4-8 °C).Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Background: Women with early menopause medical (disease) or surgical (hysterectomy) are having postmenopausal symptoms after a variable period. Osteoarthritis (OA) strikes women more often than men and it increases in prevalence, incidence and severity after menopause. The present study was done to evaluate early onset osteoarthritis knee in premature (early) menopausal women. Methods: We have studied 160 women with early menopause (before 40 yrs of age) developing symptoms and well established osteo arthritic knees. We have studied various factors with early menopause. The data was analysed using SPSS software version 22.Results: In our study 138 cases (86.25%) were surgical menopause (hysterectomy) and 22 cases (13.75%) were medical menopause where definite cause was not obvious. An early onset knee pain was noted in 1 to 2 years. But late OA was noted after 6 to 7 years of menopause. Effective treatment was wanted by majority of the patient from the point of view of post-menopausal osteosaropaenia and physiotherophy. Even in urban population erratic treatment was maximum (75%). Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, fibroid or severe intractable infection appeared be the most common indication for hysterectomy. Conclusions: We concluded that with better awareness of menopause, effective regular treatment and physiotherapy can herald the process of osteoarthritis. The difficulties were mainly developed early because of lack of awareness, no effective regular treatment and physiotherapy. Pain is the starting feature which may continue to severe disability later on

Background: In Indian classical text of Ayurveda and Yoga, there has been many indication given for sthaulya. After literature review, the Apamarga tandula and yogic practices were found as medohar (anti-obesity) agents. Objective: The present study was conducted to assess the individual as well as synergistic effect of yogic practices and Apamarga Tandula Ksheer-pak in Sthaulya.Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in Department of Dravyaguna, Sir Sundarlal Hospital, I.M.S., B.H.U., Varanasi. 160 patients of obesity were randomized into four groups, group-I (control), group-II (yogic practices daily for 1 hour), group-III (Apamarga Tandula Ksheer-pak treatment group) and in group-IV (yogic practiced daily for 1 hour along with Apamarga Tandula Ksheer-pak treatment). All the groups were followed up for 3 months. BMI and lipid profile of the groups were compared at the end of 3 months with SPSS tool (version 16).Results: Analysis of data after treatment of 3 months in all three groups (II, III, IV) of the study showed significant decrease in weight, BMI, total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL, VLDL along with significant improvement in HDL.Conclusion: At last the trial group-IV exhibits more therapeutic efficiency over group-II and III

Hurry, worry and curry are the three factors which causes intestinal upsets frequently and leads to gastrointestinal problems in modern life. Pravahika (Amoebic dysentery) is also one of the important and oftenly occurring Vyadhis of Annavaha and Pureeshvaha Srotasas in current time. Pravahika is the Pakwasahayagata kaphajavikara with symptoms of Sarakta mala, Sapravahana mala, Sakapha mala, Daah, Jwara, Bhrama Daurbalya, Anannabhilsha, Sweda and Trishna. A case report of a patient with a history of loose motion with mucous discharge for the 6 months visited Ayurveda OPD, is presented in this study. Routine stool examination, blood glucose, serum lipid profile and liver function test were performed. The patient was treated with Ayurvedic medicine Kutajghan vati (1 gm), Bilvadi churna with Takra (6 gm) and, Chitrakadi Gutika (250 mg) in divided doses for 1 month. The patient was followed up for every 7th day and there was significant improvement in the clinical features after 1 month of treatment with the Ayurvedic medicines. There were no side effects reported. This case study demonstrates the therapeutic efficacy of Bilvadi churna, Kutajghan vati and Chitrakadi Gutika in the rapid management of Pravahika.

EFFICACY OF AN AYURVEDIC INTERVENTION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF URETERIC CALCULI: A CASE STUDY

Urinary calculi is one of the most common and painful urological disorder of the urinary tract affecting 10-12 % of the population. It is characterized by frequent micturition, intermittent pain occasionally radiates to flanks, sweating and restlessness during the pain. Most of the patients taking allopathic medicine but calculi was not expel or crushed from the urinary tract. Endoscopic procedures such as ureterostomy, percutaneous nephrolithiotomy and extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy or other surgical procedures is the treatment of choice in case of ureteric calculi in the conventional system. Non-invasive and safe study had designed for the management of this entity. In the present study, An Ayurvedic intervention Chandraprabha Vati (500 mg ) and Swetparpati (250 mg) along with decoction of natural herbs 30 ml twice in a day for 90 days used for ureteric calculi. The response to the treatment is encouraging by symptoms relief and through lower abdomen ultrasonography (USG). Ureteric calculi has expel from the tract through this management.

Field experimentation on toria (Brassica campestris L.) was carried out with the major objective of utilizing the fallow land after rainy season by following suitable management practices in the region. Results revealed that under conventional tillage, roots were 39.1% longer and 36.8% heavier biomass, contrarily no tillage had 6% more soil organic carbon. The seed yield improved by 44.8% with minimum tillage over no tillage. Crop sown on 15 October obtained 16.9-47.6% additional seed yield over before and after sown crops, but line sowing evidenced 22.1% higher seed yield than the broadcasting. Planting geometry with 30x15 cm noticed 3.1-32.9% more seed yield. Nitrogen application at 75 kg/ha had 5.3-47% improvement of seed yield, whereas nitrogen use efficiency was highest with 50 kg/ha. Phosphorus application at 50 kg/ha added 61.5% more yield, whereas phosphorus-use efficiency was highest at 25 kg/ha. Twice irrigation at 30 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) noticed 40.5% extra seed yield, contrary water-use efficiency was highest with single irrigation at 30 DAS over no irrigation. Hand weeding twice at 25 and 50 DAS supplemented the seed yield by 52.6% with 55.7% weed control efficiency over no weeding. Adoption of better package of practices in newer area under existing cropping system will play a key role in future yield improvement. Therefore, as per the resource availability feasible technologies may harness higher seed yield of toria in eastern Himalayas
