Analytical approach to directed sandpile models on the Apollonian network
We investigate a set of directed sandpile models on the Apollonian network,
which are inspired on the work by Dhar and Ramaswamy (PRL \textbf{63}, 1659
(1989)) for Euclidian lattices. They are characterized by a single parameter
, that restricts the number of neighbors receiving grains from a toppling
node. Due to the geometry of the network, two and three point correlation
functions are amenable to exact treatment, leading to analytical results for
the avalanche distributions in the limit of an infinite system, for .
The exact recurrence expressions for the correlation functions are numerically
iterated to obtain results for finite size systems, when larger values of
are considered. Finally, a detailed description of the local flux properties is
provided by a multifractal scaling analysis.Comment: 7 pages in two-column format, 10 illustrations, 5 figure

Connecting microstructural attributes and permeability from 3D tomographic images of in situ shear-enhanced compaction bands using multiscale computations
Tomographic images taken inside and outside a compaction band in a field specimen of Aztec sandstone are analyzed by using numerical methods such as graph theory, level sets, and hybrid lattice Boltzmann/finite element techniques. The results reveal approximately an order of magnitude permeability reduction within the compaction band. This is less than the several orders of magnitude reduction measured from hydraulic experiments on compaction bands formed in laboratory experiments and about one order of magnitude less than inferences from two-dimensional images of Aztec sandstone. Geometrical analysis concludes that the elimination of connected pore space and increased tortuosities due to the porosity decrease are the major factors contributing to the permeability reduction. In addition, the multiscale flow simulations also indicate that permeability is fairly isotropic inside and outside the compaction band
Teleparallel Spin Connection
A new expression for the spin connection of teleparallel gravity is proposed,
given by minus the contorsion tensor plus a zero connection. The corresponding
minimal coupling is covariant under local Lorentz transformation, and
equivalent to the minimal coupling prescription of general relativity. With
this coupling prescription, therefore, teleparallel gravity turns out to be
fully equivalent to general relativity, even in the presence of spinor fields.Comment: 2 pages, RevTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev D (Brief Report
Hydrodynamics: Fluctuating Initial Conditions and Two-particle Correlations
Event-by-event hydrodynamics (or hydrodynamics with fluctuating initial
conditions) has been developed in the past few years. Here we discuss how it
may help to understand the various structures observed in two-particle
correlations.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, presented at the Workshop on Saturation, the

On bare masses in time-symmetric initial-value solutions for two black holes
The Brill-Lindquist time-symmetric initial-value solution for two uncharged
black holes is rederived using the Hamiltonian constraint equation with Dirac
delta distributions as a source for the binary black-hole field. The bare
masses of the Brill-Lindquist black holes are introduced in a way which is
applied, after straightforward modification, to the Misner-Linquist binary
black-hole solution.Comment: LaTeX, 4 page
Chiral spin-orbital liquids with nodal lines
Strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise
for realizing topological phases with fractionalized excitations. Here we
propose a chiral spin-orbital liquid as a stable phase of a realistic model for
heavy-element double perovskites. This spin liquid state has Majorana fermion
excitations with a gapless spectrum characterized by nodal lines along the
edges of the Brillouin zone. We show that the nodal lines are topological
defects of a non-Abelian Berry connection and that the system exhibits
dispersing surface states. We discuss some experimental signatures of this
state and compare them with properties of the spin liquid candidate Ba_2YMoO_6.Comment: 5 pages + supplementary materia
Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation of hydrogen diffusion in -iron
First-principles atomistic molecular dynamics simulation in the
micro-canonical and canonical ensembles has been used to study the diffusion of
interstitial hydrogen in -iron. Hydrogen to Iron ratios between
2 \times 2 \times 2$ supercell. We find that
the average optimum absorption site and the barrier for diffusion depend on the
concentration of interestitials. Iron Debye temperature decreases monotonically
for increasing concentration of interstitial hydrogen, proving that iron-iron
interatomic potential is significantly weakened in the presence of a large
number of diffusing hydrogen atoms
Dirac spinor fields in the teleparallel gravity: comment on "Metric-affine approach to teleparallel gravity"
We show that the coupling of a Dirac spinor field with the gravitational
field in the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity is consistent. For
an arbitrary SO(3,1) connection there are two possibilities for the coupling of
the spinor field with the gravitational field. The problems of consistency
raised by Y. N. Obukhov and J. G. Pereira in the paper {\it Metric-affine
approach to teleparallel gravity} [gr-qc/0212080] take place only in the
framework of one particular coupling. By adopting an alternative coupling the
consistency problem disappears.Comment: 8 pages, Latex file, no figures, to appear in the Phys. Rev. D as a
