    Gray-matter volume, midbrain dopamine D2/D3 receptors and drug craving in methamphetamine users.

    Dysfunction of the mesocorticolimbic system has a critical role in clinical features of addiction. Despite evidence suggesting that midbrain dopamine receptors influence amphetamine-induced dopamine release and that dopamine is involved in methamphetamine-induced neurotoxicity, associations between dopamine receptors and gray-matter volume have been unexplored in methamphetamine users. Here we used magnetic resonance imaging and [(18)F]fallypride positron emission tomography, respectively, to measure gray-matter volume (in 58 methamphetamine users) and dopamine D2/D3 receptor availability (binding potential relative to nondisplaceable uptake of the radiotracer, BPnd) (in 31 methamphetamine users and 37 control participants). Relationships between these measures and self-reported drug craving were examined. Although no difference in midbrain D2/D3 BPnd was detected between methamphetamine and control groups, midbrain D2/D3 BPnd was positively correlated with gray-matter volume in the striatum, prefrontal cortex, insula, hippocampus and temporal cortex in methamphetamine users, but not in control participants (group-by-midbrain D2/D3 BPnd interaction, P<0.05 corrected for multiple comparisons). Craving for methamphetamine was negatively associated with gray-matter volume in the insula, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, temporal cortex, occipital cortex, cerebellum and thalamus (P<0.05 corrected for multiple comparisons). A relationship between midbrain D2/D3 BPnd and methamphetamine craving was not detected. Lower midbrain D2/D3 BPnd may increase vulnerability to deficits in gray-matter volume in mesocorticolimbic circuitry in methamphetamine users, possibly reflecting greater dopamine-induced toxicity. Identifying factors that influence prefrontal and limbic volume, such as midbrain BPnd, may be important for understanding the basis of drug craving, a key factor in the maintenance of substance-use disorders

    Influencia de las actividades en la calidad de vida de los ancianos: revisión sistemática

    Objetivo. Identificar quais as atividades ou intervenções que causan alterações na qualidade de vida dos idosos. Método. Revisão sistemática da literatura nas bases de dados: Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Scielo, Lilacs, BDENF e PubMed. O descritor principal do Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) utilizado foi “quality of life”, combinado com os termos de maior interesse "aged, motor activity, educatuion". A pesquisa foi realizada entre julho e agosto de 2015, e incluídos artigos originais publicados entre 2010 e 2015 em inglês, português e espanhol. Além disso foi seguida a estratégia da Cochrane para elaboração do revisão. Resultados. Foram estudados 27 artigos comparando a qualidade de vida dos idosos antes e após uma intervenção de tipo física, educacional ou mista. O principal resultado obtido são que os dominios estado geral de saúde, capacidade funcional, aspectos sociais, aspecto físico e satisfação com a vida apresentaram-se mais alterados, sendo as atividades físicas em grupo aquelas executadas en maior número. Conclusões. Concluiu-se que as atividades de qualquer espécie, de preferência adaptadas, causam mudanças na qualidade de vida dos idosos em termos gerais, com destaque para a melhora nos aspectos funcionais, mentais e sociais

    Photo-reverberation mapping of a protoplanetary accretion disk around a T Tauri star

Available from the American Astronomical Society via the DOI in this recordTheoretical models and spectroscopic observations of newborn stars suggest that protoplantary disks have an inner "wall" at a distance set by the disk interaction with the star. Around T Tauri stars, the size of this disk hole is expected to be on a 0.1 au scale that is unresolved by current adaptive optics imaging, though some model-dependent constraints have been obtained by near-infrared interferometry. Here we report the first measurement of the inner disk wall around a solar-mass young stellar object, YLW 16B in the ρ Ophiuchi star-forming region, by detecting the light-travel time of the variable radiation from the stellar surface to the disk. Consistent time lags were detected on two nights, when the time series in H (1.6 μm) and K (2.2 μm) bands were synchronized while the 4.5 μm emission lagged by 74.5 ± 3.2 s. Considering the nearly edge-on geometry of the disk, the inner rim should be 0.084 au from the protostar on average, with an error of order 0.01 au. This size is likely larger than the range of magnetospheric truncations and consistent with an optically and geometrically thick disk front at the dust sublimation radius at ∼1500 K. The widths of the cross-correlation functions between the data in different wavebands place possible new constraints on the geometry of the disk.National Science Foundation (NSF

    Recovery of renal function in dialysis patients

    BACKGROUND: Although recovery of renal functions in dialysis dependent patients is estimated to be greater than 1%, there are no indicators that actually suggest such revival of renal function. Residual renal function in dialysis patients is unreliable and seldom followed. Therefore renal recovery (RR) in dialysis dependent patients may remain unnoticed. We present a group of dialysis dependent patients who regained their renal functions. The aim of this project is to determine any indicators that may identify the recovery of renal functions in dialysis dependent patients. METHODS: All the discharges from the chronic dialysis facilities were identified. Among these discharges deaths, transplants, voluntary withdrawals and transfers either to another modality or another dialysis facility were excluded in order to isolate the patients with RR. The dialysis flow sheets and medical records of these patients were subsequently reviewed. RESULTS: Eight patients with a mean age of 53.8 ± 6.7 years (± SEM) were found to have RR. Dialysis was initiated due to uremic symptoms in 6 patients and fluid overload in the remaining two. The patients remained dialysis dependent for 11.1 ± 4.2 months. All these patients had good urine output and 7 had symptoms related to dialysis. Their mean pre-initiation creatinine and BUN levels were 5.21 ± 0.6 mg/dl and 72.12 ± 11.12 mg/dl, respectively. Upon discontinuation, they remained dialysis free for 19.75 ± 5.97 months. The mean creatinine and BUN levels after cessation of dialysis were 2.85 ± 0.57 mg/dl and 29.62 ± 5.26 mg/dl, respectively, while the mean creatinine clearance calculated by 24-hour urine collection was 29.75 ± 4.78 ml/min. One patient died due to HIV complications. One patient resumed dialysis after nine months. Remaining continue to enjoy a dialysis free life. CONCLUSION: RR must be considered in patients with good urine output and unresolved acute renal failure. Dialysis intolerance may be an indicator of RR among such patients

    Aharonov-Bohm interference in topological insulator nanoribbons

    Topological insulators represent novel phases of quantum matter with an insulating bulk gap and gapless edges or surface states. The two-dimensional topological insulator phase was predicted in HgTe quantum wells and confirmed by transport measurements. Recently, Bi2Se3 and related materials have been proposed as three-dimensional topological insulators with a single Dirac cone on the surface and verified by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Here, we show unambiguous transport evidence of topological surface states through periodic quantum interference effects in layered single-crystalline Bi2Se3 nanoribbons. Pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the magnetoresistance clearly demonstrate the coverage of two-dimensional electrons on the entire surface, as expected from the topological nature of the surface states. The dominance of the primary h/e oscillation and its temperature dependence demonstrate the robustness of these electronic states. Our results suggest that topological insulator nanoribbons afford novel promising materials for future spintronic devices at room temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, RevTex forma

    Lower cardiorespiratory fitness contributes to increased insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in middle-aged South Asian compared with European men living in the UK

    AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to determine the extent to which increased insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in South Asian men, compared with white European men, living in the UK, was due to lower cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen uptake [[Formula: see text]]) and physical activity. METHODS: One hundred South Asian and 100 age- and BMI-matched European men without diagnosed diabetes, aged 40–70 years, had fasted blood taken for measurement of glucose concentration, HOMA-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA(IR)), plus other risk factors, and underwent assessment of physical activity (using accelerometry), [Formula: see text], body size and composition, and demographic and other lifestyle factors. For 13 South Asian and one European man, HbA(1c) levels were >6.5% (>48 mmol/mol), indicating potential undiagnosed diabetes; these men were excluded from the analyses. Linear regression models were used to determine the extent to which body size and composition, fitness and physical activity variables explained differences in HOMA(IR) and fasting glucose between South Asian and European men. RESULTS: HOMA(IR) and fasting glucose were 67% (p < 0.001) and 3% (p < 0.018) higher, respectively, in South Asians than Europeans. Lower [Formula: see text], lower physical activity and greater total adiposity in South Asians individually explained 68% (95% CI 45%, 91%), 29% (11%, 46%) and 52% (30%, 80%), respectively, and together explained 83% (50%, 119%) (all p < 0.001) of the ethnic difference in HOMA(IR). Lower [Formula: see text] and greater total adiposity, respectively, explained 61% (9%, 111%) and 39% (9%, 76%) (combined effect 63% [8%, 115%]; all p < 0.05) of the ethnic difference in fasting glucose. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Lower cardiorespiratory fitness is a key factor associated with the excess insulin resistance and fasting glycaemia in middle-aged South Asian, compared with European, men living in the UK.     Objective: To know the satisfaction of UCAM nursing students regarding the clinical training included in the practical training they attended during the undergraduate program. Method: A descriptive, observational and transversal study was carried out with nursing students of the Catholic University of San Antonio during the academic years 2004/05 and 2007/08. The studied sample consisted of all the nursing students registered in courses of second and third year with clinical training credits. A closed specific questionnaire of multiple choice was elaborated for the accomplishment of the study. Results:  More than 90% of the students state that seminars improve the clinical training and that the theoretical study of practice seminars is helpful for improving nursing techniques. Techniques learned at seminars meet real assistance. Students of both academic years describe the relation with nurses and clinical mentors at hospitals and health centers as good and very good in more than 90% of the cases. More than 80% of the students consider that clinical mentors have facilitated its integration in working team. Conclusions: It is important that the student satisfaction in internal and external practice training is good and that the relation with clinical mentors is adequate. Regarding the opinion of the students about the clinical mentor management in the Unit of Nursing Practical Training, it was concluded that there are aspects to be improved in which we have already begun to work.Objetivo. Conocer la satisfacción de los alumnos de enfermería de la Universidad Católica San Antonio sobre las prácticas que desarrollan durante su formación de pregrado. Método. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo observacional trasversal realizado en la Diplomatura de Enfermería de la Universidad Católica San Antonio durante los cursos académicos 2004/05 y 2007/08. La población objeto de estudio son todos los alumnos de enfermería matriculados en asignaturas de segundo y tercer curso con créditos prácticos. Para la realización del estudio se elaboró un cuestionario específico cerrado de respuesta múltiple. Resultados. Más del 90% de los alumnos afirman que los seminarios mejoran el inicio de las prácticas clínicas, y que el estudio teórico de los seminarios prácticos es de gran ayuda para mejorar la técnica. Las técnicas aprendidas en los seminarios se corresponden con la realidad asistencial. Los alumnos de ambos cursos académicos califican la relación con los profesionales de los centros sanitarios y socio-sanitarios como buena y muy buena en más de un 90% de los casos. Más del 80% de los alumnos consideran que el profesional – tutor ha facilitado su integración en el equipo de trabajo. Conclusiones. Se puede subrayar que la satisfacción de los alumnos tanto en las prácticas internas y externas es buena y que la relación con los profesionales – tutores es adecuada. En cuanto a la opinión de los alumnos sobre las gestiones que se llevan a cabo desde la Unidad de Prácticas de Enfermería, concluimos que existen aspectos mejorables sobre los que ya hemos comenzado a trabajar.

    Adaptive Lévy Walks in Foraging Fallow Deer

    Background: Lévy flights are random walks, the step lengths of which come from probability distributions with heavy power-law tails, such that clusters of short steps are connected by rare long steps. Lévy walks maximise search efficiency of mobile foragers. Recently, several studies raised some concerns about the reliability of the statistical analysis used in previous analyses. Further, it is unclear whether Lévy walks represent adaptive strategies or emergent properties determined by the interaction between foragers and resource distribution. Thus two fundamental questions still need to be addressed: the presence of Lévy walks in the wild and whether or not they represent a form of adaptive behaviour. Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied 235 paths of solitary and clustered (i.e. foraging in group) fallow deer (Dama dama), exploiting the same pasture. We used maximum likelihood estimation for discriminating between a power-tailed distribution and the exponential alternative and rank/frequency plots to discriminate between Lévy walks and composite Brownian walks. We showed that solitary deer perform Lévy searches, while clustered animals did not adopt that strategy. Conclusion/Significance: Our demonstration of the presence of Lévy walks is, at our knowledge, the first available which adopts up-to-date statistical methodologies in a terrestrial mammal.     New benzophenone and quercetin galloyl glycosides from Psidium guajava L.

    New benzophenone and flavonol galloyl glycosides were isolated from an 80% MeOH extract of Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) together with five known quercetin glycosides. The structures of the novel glycosides were elucidated to be 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzophenone 4-O-(6″-O-galloyl)-β-d-glucopyranoside (1, guavinoside A), 2,4,6-trihydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzophenone 4-O-(6″-O-galloyl)-β-d-glucopyranoside (2, guavinoside B), and quercetin 3-O-(5″-O-galloyl)-α-l-arabinofuranoside (3, guavinoside C) by NMR, MS, UV, and IR spectroscopies. Isolated phenolic glycosides showed significant inhibitory activities against histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells, and nitric oxide production from a murine macrophage-like cell line, RAW 264.7
