BPS States on M5-brane in Large C-field Background

Dominant negative Bmp5 mutation reveals key role of BMPs in skeletal response to mechanical stimulation
Background. Over a hundred years ago, Wolff originally observed that bone growth and remodeling are exquisitely sensitive to mechanical forces acting on the skeleton. Clinical studies have noted that the size and the strength of bone increase with weight bearing and muscular activity and decrease with bed rest and disuse. Although the processes of mechanotransduction and functional response of bone to mechanical strain have been extensively studied, the molecular signaling mechanisms that mediate the response of bone cells to mechanical stimulation remain unclear. Results. Here, we identify a novel germline mutation at the mouse Bone morphogenetic protein 5 (Bmp5) locus. Genetic analysis shows that the mutation occurs at a site encoding the proteolytic processing sequence of the BMP5 protein and blocks proper processing of BMP5. Anatomic studies reveal that this mutation affects the formation of multiple skeletal features including several muscle-induced skeletal sites in vivo. Biomechanical studies of osteoblasts from these anatomic sites show that the mutation inhibits the proper response of bone cells to mechanical stimulation. Conclusion. The results from these genetic, biochemical, and biomechanical studies suggest that BMPs are required not only for skeletal patterning during embryonic development, but also for bone response and remodeling to mechanical stimulation at specific anatomic sites in the skeleton. © 2008 Ho et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

Temperature dependent optical properties of CH<inf>3</inf>NH<inf>3</inf>PbI<inf>3</inf> perovskite by spectroscopic ellipsometry
© 2016 AIP Publishing LLC. Mixed organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as a promising new class of semiconductors for photovoltaics with excellent light harvesting properties. Thorough understanding of the optical properties of these materials is important for photovoltaic device optimization and the insight this provides for the knowledge of energy band structures. Here we present an investigation of the sub-room temperature dependent optical properties of polycrystalline thin films of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskites that are of increasing interest for photovoltaics. The complex dielectric function of CH3NH3PbI3 in the energy range of 0.5-4.1 eV is determined between 77 K and 297 K using spectroscopic ellipsometry. An increase in optical permittivity as the temperature decreases is illustrated for CH3NH3PbI3. Optical transitions and critical points were analyzed using the energy dependent second derivative of these dielectric functions as a function of temperature
Deconvolution of positron annihilation coincidence Doppler broadening spectra using an iterative projected Newton method with non-negativity constraints
A generalized least-square method with Tikonov-Miller regularization and non-negativity constarints was developed for deconvoluting two-dimensional coincidence Doppler broadening spectroscopy (CDBS) spectra. A projected Newton algorithm was developed to solve the generalized least-square problem. The algorithm was used to deconvolute experimental CDBS data from aluminum was tested on Monte Carlo generated spectra. The retrieval of the positron-electron momentum distributions in the low momentum region was also demonstrated.published_or_final_versio
The prognosis of allocentric and egocentric neglect : evidence from clinical scans
We contrasted the neuroanatomical substrates of sub-acute and chronic visuospatial deficits associated with different aspects of unilateral neglect using computed tomography scans acquired as part of routine clinical diagnosis. Voxel-wise statistical analyses were conducted on a group of 160 stroke patients scanned at a sub-acute stage. Lesion-deficit relationships were assessed across the whole brain, separately for grey and white matter. We assessed lesions that were associated with behavioural performance (i) at a sub-acute stage (within 3 months of the stroke) and (ii) at a chronic stage (after 9 months post stroke). Allocentric and egocentric neglect symptoms at the sub-acute stage were associated with lesions to dissociated regions within the frontal lobe, amongst other regions. However the frontal lesions were not associated with neglect at the chronic stage. On the other hand, lesions in the angular gyrus were associated with persistent allocentric neglect. In contrast, lesions within the superior temporal gyrus extending into the supramarginal gyrus, as well as lesions within the basal ganglia and insula, were associated with persistent egocentric neglect. Damage within the temporo-parietal junction was associated with both types of neglect at the sub-acute stage and 9 months later. Furthermore, white matter disconnections resulting from damage along the superior longitudinal fasciculus were associated with both types of neglect and critically related to both sub-acute and chronic deficits. Finally, there was a significant difference in the lesion volume between patients who recovered from neglect and patients with chronic deficits. The findings presented provide evidence that (i) the lesion location and lesion size can be used to successfully predict the outcome of neglect based on clinical CT scans, (ii) lesion location alone can serve as a critical predictor for persistent neglect symptoms, (iii) wide spread lesions are associated with neglect symptoms at the sub-acute stage but only some of these are critical for predicting whether neglect will become a chronic disorder and (iv) the severity of behavioural symptoms can be a useful predictor of recovery in the absence of neuroimaging findings on clinical scans. We discuss the implications for understanding the symptoms of the neglect syndrome, the recovery of function and the use of clinical scans to predict outcome
