The AXES-lite video search engine
The aim of AXES is to develop tools that provide various types of users with new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, helping them discover, browse, navigate, search, and enrich archives. This paper describes the initial (lite) version of the AXES search engine, which is targeted at professional users such as media professionals and archivists. We describe the overall system design, the user interface, and the results of our experiments at TRECVid 2011
Search and hyperlinking task at MediaEval 2012
The Search and Hyperlinking Task was one of the Brave New Tasks at MediaEval 2012. The Task consisted of two subtasks which focused on search and linking in retrieval from a collection of semi-professional video content. These tasks followed up on research carried out within the MediaEval 2011 Rich Speech Retrieval (RSR) Task and the VideoCLEF 2009 Linking Task
Biogeographical Patterns in Oak Gall Wasp-Parasitoid Communities Associated with Oregon White Oak, Quercus Garryana, Under Anthropogenic Change
Species are expanding their ranges poleward as a consequence of global climate change. However, natural enemies may lag behind range-expanding hosts, facilitating “ecological release.” A species that has experienced a recent poleward range expansion is Neuroterus saltatorius, an oak gall wasp (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) that expanded its range from mainland western North America to Vancouver Island, BC. In its expanded range, it is threatening oak savanna ecosystems. This species induces gall structures on its host plant, Quercus garryana. Parasitoid wasps are attracted to galls and feed on developing insects in galls, acting as population control agents. We examine how interactions with enemies and competitors change over the range of Q. garryana and in the native and expanded range of N. saltatorius, and if changes in interactions relate to ecological release. Parasitoid wasps were reared from cynipid species collected from Q. garryana at 18 sites from Northern California to Vancouver Island, BC and identified to morphospecies using taxonomic keys. We found 21 cynipid morphospecies that co-occur with N. saltatorius on Q. garryana throughout its range, with a subset of cynipids (9 morphospecies) in the expanded range. We have identified 16 species of parasitoids from N. saltatorius. Preliminary results suggest a different composition of parasitoid enemies in its expanded range compared to its native range. This is likely due to a change in the composition of known generalist parasitoids that attack the range-expanding host that may not be effectively switching other from other competitors, rather than from a loss of known specialist parasitoids. We have also identified parasitoid morphospecies from a co-occurring competitor cynipid, Andricus quercuscalifornicus, and found no overlap in parasitoids with N. saltatorius. This suggests that A. quercuscalifornicus is not a competitor and does not contribute to the release of N. saltatorius. Uncovering how species interactions with range-expanding hosts are altered is important to predict outcomes of anthropogenic range expansions.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2021/1085/thumbnail.jp

Profile of bubbling solutions to a Liouville system
In several fields of Physics, Chemistry and Ecology, some models are
described by Liouville systems. In this article we first prove a uniqueness
result for a Liouville system in . Then we establish an uniform
estimate for bubbling solutions of a locally defined Liouville system near an
isolated blowup point. The uniqueness result, as well as the local uniform
estimates are crucial ingredients for obtaining a priori estimate, degree
counting formulas and existence results for Liouville systems defined on
Riemann surfaces.Comment: 32 page
Linking inside a video collection - what and how to measure?
Although linking video to additional information sources seems to be a sensible approach to satisfy information needs of user, the perspective of users is not yet analyzed on a fundamental level in real-life scenarios. However, a better understanding of the motivation of users to follow links in video, which anchors users prefer to link from within a video, and what type of link targets users are typically interested in, is important to be able to model automatic linking of audiovisual content appropriately. In this paper we report on our methodology towards eliciting user requirements with respect to video linking in the course of a broader study on user requirements in searching and a series of benchmark evaluations on searching and linking
Two Energy Release Processes for CMEs: MHD Catastrophe and Magnetic Reconnection
It remains an open question how magnetic energy is rapidly released in the
solar corona so as to create solar explosions such as solar flares and coronal
mass ejections (CMEs). Recent studies have confirmed that a system consisting
of a flux rope embedded in a background field exhibits a catastrophic behavior,
and the energy threshold at the catastrophic point may exceed the associated
open field energy. The accumulated free energy in the corona is abruptly
released when the catastrophe takes place, and it probably serves as the main
means of energy release for CMEs at least in the initial phase. Such a release
proceeds via an ideal MHD process in contrast with nonideal ones such as
magnetic reconnection. The catastrophe results in a sudden formation of
electric current sheets, which naturally provide proper sites for fast magnetic
reconnection. The reconnection may be identified with a solar flare associated
with the CME on one hand, and produces a further acceleration of the CME on the
other. On this basis, several preliminary suggestions are made for future
observational investigations, especially with the proposed KuaFu satellites, on
the roles of the MHD catastrophe and magnetic reconnection in the magnetic
energy release associated with CMEs and flares.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Adv. Spa. Res., in press
Enhancing Instance-Level Image Classification with Set-Level Labels
Instance-level image classification tasks have traditionally relied on
single-instance labels to train models, e.g., few-shot learning and transfer
learning. However, set-level coarse-grained labels that capture relationships
among instances can provide richer information in real-world scenarios. In this
paper, we present a novel approach to enhance instance-level image
classification by leveraging set-level labels. We provide a theoretical
analysis of the proposed method, including recognition conditions for fast
excess risk rate, shedding light on the theoretical foundations of our
approach. We conducted experiments on two distinct categories of datasets:
natural image datasets and histopathology image datasets. Our experimental
results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, showcasing improved
classification performance compared to traditional single-instance label-based
methods. Notably, our algorithm achieves 13% improvement in classification
accuracy compared to the strongest baseline on the histopathology image
classification benchmarks. Importantly, our experimental findings align with
the theoretical analysis, reinforcing the robustness and reliability of our
proposed method. This work bridges the gap between instance-level and set-level
image classification, offering a promising avenue for advancing the
capabilities of image classification models with set-level coarse-grained
labels
The search and hyperlinking task at MediaEval 2013
The Search and Hyperlinking Task formed part of the MediaEval 2013 evaluation workshop. The Task consisted of two sub-tasks: (1) answering known-item queries from a collection of roughly 1200 hours of broadcast TV material, and (2) linking anchors within the known item to other parts of the video collection. We provide an overview of the task and the data sets used
