Continuum discretized BCS approach for weakly bound nuclei
The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) formalism is extended by including the
single-particle continuum in order to analyse the evolution of pairing in an
isotopic chain from stability up to the drip line. We propose a continuum
discretized generalized BCS based on single-particle pseudostates (PS). These
PS are generated from the diagonalization of the single-particle Hamiltonian
within a Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) basis. The consistency of the
results versus the size of the basis is studied. The method is applied to
neutron rich Oxygen and Carbon isotopes and compared with similar previous
works and available experimental data. We make use of the flexibility of the
proposed model in order to study the evolution of the occupation of the
low-energy continuum when the system becomes weakly bound. We find a larger
influence of the non-resonant continuum as long as the Fermi level approaches
zero.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, to be submitte
Vacuum decay in an interacting multiverse
We examine a new multiverse scenario in which the component universes
interact. We focus our attention to the process of "true" vacuum nucleation in
the false vacuum within one single element of the multiverse. It is shown that
the interactions lead to a collective behaviour that might lead, under specific
conditions, to a pre-inflationary phase and ensued distinguishable imprints in
the comic microwave background radiation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

A Generic Communications Module for Cooperative 3D Visualization and Modelling over the Internet: the Collaborative API
Cooperative three-dimensional visualization and modeling applications allow a distributed group of users to work together with a model they share. To implement this kind of applications the underlying communications system must provide reliable and ordered multicast of users interactions. Due to the high complexity that characterizes the models, network bandwidth requirements have limited their use to intranets or in a few cases to very high-speed Internet connections.
In this paper we present a communications module that solves this problem. The library exposed, which is called Collaborative API, supports the creation of very efficient cooperative 3D visualization and modeling applications by optimizing the use of the network resources.
The Collaborative API, implements a new communications architecture: the dynamic client/server. The communications module presented in this paper is illustrated by two examples of applications that use it to provide cooperative 3D visualization over the Internet
On the semiclassical mass of -kinks
One-loop mass shifts to the classical masses of stable kinks arising in a
massive non-linear -sigma model are computed. Ultraviolet
divergences are controlled using the heat kernel/zeta function regularization
method. A comparison between the results achieved from exact and
high-temperature asymptotic heat traces is analyzed in depth.Comment: RevTex file, 15 pages, 2 figures. Version to appear in Journal of

Critical point symmetries in boson-fermion systems. The case of shape transition in odd nuclei in a multi-orbit model
We investigate phase transitions in boson-fermion systems. We propose an
analytically solvable model (E(5/12)) to describe odd nuclei at the critical
point in the transition from the spherical to -unstable behaviour. In
the model, a boson core described within the Bohr Hamiltonian interacts with an
unpaired particle assumed to be moving in the three single particle orbitals
j=1/2,3/2,5/2. Energy spectra and electromagnetic transitions at the critical
point compare well with the results obtained within the Interacting Boson
Fermion Model, with a boson-fermion Hamiltonian that describes the same
physical situation.Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett. (in press
