    Automatic Lumbar Vertebrae Segmentation in Fluoroscopic Images via Optimised Concurrent Hough Transform

    Low back pain is a very common problem in the industrialised countries and its associated cost is enormous. Diagnosis of the underlying causes can be extremely difficult. Many studies have focused on mechanical disorders of the spine. Digital videofluoroscopy (DVF) was widely used to obtain images for motion studies. This can provide motion sequences of the lumbar spine, but the images obtained often suffer due to noise, exacerbated by the very low radiation dosage. Thus determining vertebrae position within the image sequence presents a considerable challenge. In this paper, we show how our new approach can automatically detect the positions and borders of vertebrae concurrently, relieving many of the problems experienced in other approaches. First, we use phase congruency to relieve difficulty associated with threshold selection in edge detection of the illumination variant DVF images. Then, our new Hough transform approach is applied to determine the moving vertebrae, concurrently. We include optimisation via a genetic algorithm as without it the extraction of moving multiple vertebrae is computationally daunting. Our results show that this new approach can indeed provide extractions of position and rotation which appear to be of sufficient quality to aid therapy and diagnosis of spinal disorders

    Lumbar Spine Location in Fluoroscopic Images by Evidence Gathering

    Low back pain (LBP) is a very common problem and lumbar segmental instability is one of the causes. It is important to investigate lumbar spine movement in order to understand instability better and as an aid to diagnosis. Digital videofluoroscopy provides a method of quantifying the motion of individual vertebrae, but due to the relatively poor image quality, it is difficult and time consuming to locate landmarks manually, from which the kinematics can be calculated. Some semi-automatic approaches have already been developed but these are still time consuming and require some manual interaction. In this paper we apply the Hough transform (HT) to locate the lumbar spinal segments automatically. The HT is a powerful tool in computer vision and it has good performance in noise and partial occlusion. A recent arbitrary shape representation avoids problems inherent with tabular representations in the generalised HT (GHT) by describing shapes using a continuous formulation. The target shape is described by a set of Fourier descriptors, which vote in an accumulator space from which the object parameters of translation (including the x and y direction), rotation and scale can be determined. At present, this algorithm has been applied to the images of lumbar spine, and has been shown to provide satisfactory results. Further work will concentrate on reducing the computational time for real-time application, and on approaches to refine information at the apices, given initialisation by the new HT method

    Measuring Investment Distortions when Risk-Averse Managers Decide Whether to Undertake Risky Projects

    This paper examines distortions in corporate investment decisions when a new project changes firm risk. It presents a dynamic model in which a self-interested, risk-averse manager makes investment decisions at a levered firm. The model, calibrated using data from public firms, is used to estimate the magnitude of distortions in investment decisions. Despite potential wealth transfers from debtholders, managers compensated with equity prefer safe projects to risky ones. Important factors in this decision are the expected changes in the values of future tax shields and bankruptcy costs when firm risk changes. We also evaluate the extent to which this effect varies with firm leverage, managerial risk aversion, managerial non-firm wealth, project size, debt duration, and the structure of management compensation packages.

    Phasing Into Retirement

    Employers have been launching phased retirement programs to help workers navigate the transition from work to retirement more effectively. This paper examines the experience of the phased retirement system for tenured faculty in the University of North Carolina system. After phased retirement was introduced, there was a sizable increase in the overall separation rate in the system. A multinomial logit model of the retirement decision as a function of pension incentives, employee performance, demographics, and campus characteristics is developed. The key empirical result is that the odds of entering phased retirement are strongly and inversely related to employee performance, as measured by recent pay increases.

    The five most numerous species of benthonic foraminifera sampled from the LaHave River estuary in Nova Scotia were used to define two major faunal assemblage zones. These are the upper estuarine and transitional zones of a "transitional" type of estuary as defined by Scott et al (1977). The transitional zone is subdivided into upper and lower subzones. Foraminiferal distribution in the study area appears to be determined by sediment patterns as water temperatures and salinity show little variation

    Nonlinear normal modes, modal interactions and isolated resonance curves

    The objective of the present study is to explore the connection between the nonlinear normal modes of an undamped and unforced nonlinear system and the isolated resonance curves that may appear in the damped response of the forced system. To this end, an energy balancing technique is used to predict the amplitude of the harmonic forcing that is necessary to excite a specific nonlinear normal mode. A cantilever beam with a nonlinear spring at its tip serves to illustrate the developments. The practical implications of isolated resonance curves are also discussed by computing the beam response to sine sweep excitations of increasing amplitudes.Comment: Journal pape

    An eighth-century inscribed cross-slab in Dull, Perthshire

    The discovery of a cross-inscribed slab with an inscription is described. Because of its importance it was decided to invite specialist comment on this piece of sculpture and to publish it in advance of the full report on the excavations. The form of the monument, its inscription and archaeological context are considered. The text appears to consist of a Gaelic personal name. The script is a form of geometrical lettering which can be dated to the opening quarter of the eighth century. The form of the cross has Columban associations which sit well with place-name and other evidence which points to Dull having been a monastery founded from Iona by c. AD 700

    Sleep Characteristics in Patients with Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Descriptive Study

    Study Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore sleep habits and characteristics of patients with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) presenting at an outpatient, chiropractic clinic using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Sleep Scale. Methods: Fifty-one patients from an outpatient chiropractic and physical therapy clinic specializing in spinal rehabilitation participated in this cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data were collected using a descriptive survey, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the self-administered 12-item MOS Sleep Scale. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to describe pain, disability, and sleep characteristics of the study sample, and computation of confidence intervals to determine differences in means of sleep characteristics between the non-WAD population (as determined by previous studies) and the study sample of WAD patients. Results: Results indicate that when compared to normative values of the non-WAD population, the sample of WAD patients in this study presents with significantly greater measures of neck disability (NDI), neck pain (VAS), sleep disturbance, snoring, shortness of breath and headache, sleep somnolence and sleep problems index I and II. This sample also presents with significantly lower measures of optimal sleep when compared to the general population. Conclusion: Consistent with previous research, findings from this study indicate that WAD patients have increased neck disability and pain, and poorer sleep outcomes, indicating the need for clinicians to assess sleep characteristics and incorporate interventions aimed at alleviating these symptoms when planning rehabilitation. Findings provide evidence for the need to further explore sleep disturbances among WAD patients to establish a stronger understanding of the course and prognosis of this condition
