Swarm optimization for adaptive phase measurements with low visibility

Adaptive feedback normally provides the greatest accuracy for optical phase measurements. New advances in nitrogen vacancy centre technology have enabled magnetometry via individual spin measurements, which are similar to optical phase measurements but with low visibility. The adaptive measurements that previously worked well with high-visibility optical interferometry break down and give poor results for nitrogen vacancy centre measurements. We use advanced search techniques based on swarm optimisation to design better adaptive measurements that can provide improved measurement accuracy with low-visibility interferometry, with applications in nitrogen vacancy centre magnetometry.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, comments welcom

    First Stars III Conference Summary

The understanding of the formation, life, and death of Population III stars, as well as the impact that these objects had on later generations of structure formation, is one of the foremost issues in modern cosmological research and has been an active area of research during the past several years. We summarize the results presented at "First Stars III," a conference sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics. This conference, the third in a series, took place in July 2007 at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S.A.Comment: 11 pages, no figures; Conference summary for First Stars III, which was held in Santa Fe, NM on July 15-20, 2007. The 50 horsepower solar powered irrigation facility near Gila Bend, Arizona which includes a Rankine cycle demonstrates the technical feasibility of solar powered pumping. The design of a facility specifically for the irrigation farmer using the technology that has been developed over the last four years is proposed

The author has identified the following significant results. Successful tentative calibration permits computer programs to be written to convert Skylab thermal tapes into line-printed graymaps showing actual surface radiation temperature distributions at the time of imaging. The calibrations will be further checked when atmospheric soundings are available. Success of Skylab calibration suggests that satellite are feasible platforms for thermal scanning and provide a much broader geographical field of view than is possible with airborne platforms

Consistency of WIMP Dark Matter as radiative neutrino mass messenger

    Get PDF
The scotogenic scenario provides an attractive approach to both Dark Matter and neutrino mass generation, in which the same symmetry that stabilises Dark Matter also ensures the radiative seesaw origin of neutrino mass. However the simplest scenario may suffer from inconsistencies arising from the spontaneous breaking of the underlying Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 symmetry. Here we show that the singlet-triplet extension of the simplest model naturally avoids this problem due to the presence of scalar triplets neutral under the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 which affect the evolution of the couplings in the scalar sector. The scenario offers good prospects for direct WIMP Dark Matter detection through the nuclear recoil method.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

Local-time asymmetries in the Venus thermosphere

    Get PDF
Our current understanding of the global structure and dynamics of the Venus thermosphere is embodied in models such as the Venus Thermospheric General Circulation Model (VTGCM) and empirical composition models such as VIRA and VTS3. We have completed an analysis of ultraviolet images of Venus at 130 nm acquired by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Ultraviolet Spectrometer (PVOUVS). We have examined 97 images spanning the 10-year period between 1980 and 1990, and have developed a technique for global radiative transfer modeling with which we create synthetic models of each image analyzed. We have developed a hypothesis for understanding the persistent local-time asymmetry observed as a signature of vertically propagating internal gravity waves interacting with the thermospheric SS-AS circulation. This hypothesis is presented
