Mycobacterium abscessus bacteremia in an immunocompetent patient following a coronary artery bypass graft
Sternal osteomyelitis with bacteremia due to Mycobacterium abscessus is rarely seen in immunocompetent hosts. Routine pyogenic cultures in these cases are often negative causing a delay in diagnosis and treatment. Clinicians and microbiologists should rule out the possibility of infection due to nontuberculous mycobacteria while managing cases of nonhealing culture-negative wounds with conventional antibiotic therapy. We report a case of bacteremia secondary to a nonhealing sternal wound due to M. abscessus. A combination of radical debridement and prolonged antimicrobial therapy helped in the complete eradication of the infection
Combined energy -- diffraction data refinement of decagonal AlNiCo
We incorporate realistic pair potential energies directly into a non-linear
least-square fit of diffraction data to quantitatively compare structure models
with experiment for the Ni-rich (AlNiCo) quasicrystal. The initial structure
models are derived from a few {\it a priori} assumptions (gross features of the
Patterson function) and the pair potentials. In place of the common hyperspace
approach to the structure refinement of quasicrystals, we use a real-space tile
decoration scheme, which does not rely on strict quasiperiodicity, and makes it
easy to enforce sensible local arrangements of the atoms. Inclusion of the
energies provides information complementary to the diffraction data and
protects the fit procedure from converging on spurious solutions. The method
pinpoints sites which are likely to break the symmetry of their local
environment.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the Internation Conference on

2-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-methylphenyl diphenylphosphinate
In the title molecule, C25H20N3O2P, the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzotriazol ring system and the N-bonded benzene ring is 45.8 (2)°. All but one of the angles at the P atom show slight distortions from an ideal tetrahedral geometry
Interpreting Lidar Measurements to Better Estimate Surface PM2.S in Study Regions of DISCOVER-AQ
The use of satellite AOD data to estimate surface PM2.5 has been broadly studied in various regions. Some showed good results while some showed relatively poor with the simple relationship between AOD and PM2.5. The key factor is the aerosol vertical distribution. Lidar extinction profiles provide insights into the aerosol mixing not only in the boundary layer but also quantifying residual aerosol abundance above boundary layer with e-folding scale height. The normalizing AOD by hazy layer height is proven better in correlating with PM2.5. In other words, extinction measurements near the surface can be a proxy for surface PM2.5. In this study, we will use NASA airborne HSRL (High Spectral Resolution Lidar) during SJV2007 (San Joaquin Valley, February 2007) and surface MPLNet (Micropulse Lidar Network) at GSFC between 2007 and 2010 to characterize the relationship for the DISCOVER-AQ (Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from COlumn and VERtically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality) field experiments; the first over Baltimore-Washington was conducted in July 2011
Pentacene islands grown on ultra-thin SiO2
Ultra-thin oxide (UTO) films were grown on Si(111) in ultrahigh vacuum at
room temperature and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The
ultra-thin oxide films were then used as substrates for room temperature growth
of pentacene. The apparent height of the first layer is 1.57 +/- 0.05 nm,
indicating standing up pentacene grains in the thin-film phase were formed.
Pentacene is molecularly resolved in the second and subsequent molecular
layers. The measured in-plane unit cell for the pentacene (001) plane (ab
plane) is a=0.76+/-0.01 nm, b=0.59+/-0.01 nm, and gamma=87.5+/-0.4 degrees. The
films are unperturbed by the UTO's short-range spatial variation in tunneling
probability, and reduce its corresponding effective roughness and correlation
exponent with increasing thickness. The pentacene surface morphology follows
that of the UTO substrate, preserving step structure, the long range surface
rms roughness of ~0.1 nm, and the structural correlation exponent of ~1.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
