    Peer Assessment System for Modern Learning Settings: Towards a Flexible E-Assessment System

    According to the rapid changes in our life styles and in order to cope with the new requirements for modernlearning settings and activities, several applications have been developed to provide our modern society with theselearning settings. E-assessment as a main part of e-learning has been affected by these new settings and new aspects such as peer assessment have become more and more important. In this paper, we will present a computer-assisted peer assessment system that can be used to improve the learning process. An overall architecture will be presented and an experiment has been conducted. First findings will be discussed and future work will be mentioned

    3-Phenylcoumarins as Inhibitors of HIV-1 Replication

    We have synthesized fourteen 3-phenylcoumarin derivatives and evaluated their anti-HIV activity. Antiviral activity was assessed on MT-2 cells infected with viral clones carrying the luciferase gene as reporter. Inhibition of HIV transcription and Tat function were tested on cells stably transfected with the HIV-LTR and Tat protein. Six compounds displayed NF-κB inhibition, four resulted Tat antagonists and three of them showed both activities. Three compounds inhibited HIV replication with IC50 values < 25 μM. The antiviral effect of the 4-hydroxycoumarin derivative 19 correlates with its specific inhibition of Tat functions, while compound 8, 3-(2-chlorophenyl)coumarin, seems to act through a mechanism unrelated to the molecular targets considered in this research

    Evidence-Based Annotation of the Malaria Parasite's Genome Using Comparative Expression Profiling

    A fundamental problem in systems biology and whole genome sequence analysis is how to infer functions for the many uncharacterized proteins that are identified, whether they are conserved across organisms of different phyla or are phylum-specific. This problem is especially acute in pathogens, such as malaria parasites, where genetic and biochemical investigations are likely to be more difficult. Here we perform comparative expression analysis on Plasmodium parasite life cycle data derived from P. falciparum blood, sporozoite, zygote and ookinete stages, and P. yoelii mosquito oocyst and salivary gland sporozoites, blood and liver stages and show that type II fatty acid biosynthesis genes are upregulated in liver and insect stages relative to asexual blood stages. We also show that some universally uncharacterized genes with orthologs in Plasmodium species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and humans show coordinated transcription patterns in large collections of human and yeast expression data and that the function of the uncharacterized genes can sometimes be predicted based on the expression patterns across these diverse organisms. We also use a comprehensive and unbiased literature mining method to predict which uncharacterized parasite-specific genes are likely to have roles in processes such as gliding motility, host-cell interactions, sporozoite stage, or rhoptry function. These analyses, together with protein-protein interaction data, provide probabilistic models that predict the function of 926 uncharacterized malaria genes and also suggest that malaria parasites may provide a simple model system for the study of some human processes. These data also provide a foundation for further studies of transcriptional regulation in malaria parasites

    Towards an Enhanced Approach for Peer-Assessment Activities

    In this paper, we will address an enhanced approach for online peer-assessment where new features of candidate answer marking have been used. Students are capable to select specific parts from the candidate answer and mark them as correct, wrong, or irrelevant. Special colors are used to tag the selected part of the candidate answer in order to help students giving a reasonable final score and to provide visual feedback for the answer owner. A web based tool has been developed, an experiment was conducted and valuable results have been found
