Insights into antimicrobial resistance among long distance migratory East Canadian High Arctic light-bellied Brent geese (Branta bernicla hrota)

Available from BioMed Central via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the most significant threat to global public health and ascertaining the role wild birds play in the epidemiology of resistance is critically important. This study investigated the prevalence of AMR Gram-negative bacteria among long-distance migratory East Canadian High Arctic (ECHA) light-bellied Brent geese found wintering on the east coast of Ireland. FINDINGS: In this study a number of bacterial species were isolated from cloacal swabs taken from ECHA light-bellied Brent geese. Nucleotide sequence analysis identified five species of Gram-negative bacteria; the dominant isolated species were Pantoea spp. (n = 5) followed by Buttiauxella agrestis (n = 2). Antimicrobial susceptibility disk diffusion results identified four of the Pantoea spp. strains, and one of the Buttiauxella agrestis strains resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge this is the first record of AMR bacteria isolated from long distance migratory ECHA light-bellied Brent geese. This indicates that this species may act as reservoirs and potential disseminators of resistance genes into remote natural ecosystems across their migratory range. G_2 Perfect-Fluid Cosmologies with a proper conformal Killing vector
We study the Einstein field equations for spacetimes admitting a maximal
two-dimensional abelian group of isometries acting orthogonally transitively on
spacelike surfaces and, in addition, with at least one conformal Killing
vector. The three-dimensional conformal group is restricted to the case when
the two-dimensional abelian isometry subalgebra is an ideal and it is also
assumed to act on non-null hypersurfaces (both, spacelike and timelike cases
are studied). We consider both, diagonal and non-diagonal metrics and find all
the perfect-fluid solutions under these assumptions (except those already
known). We find four families of solutions, each one containing arbitrary
parameters for which no differential equations remain to be integrated. We
write the line-elements in a simplified form and perform a detailed study for
each of these solutions, giving the kinematical quantities of the fluid
velocity vector, the energy-density and pressure, values of the parameters for
which the energy conditions are fulfilled everywhere, the Petrov type, the
singularities in the spacetimes and the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker

Perennial Ryegrass Variety Differences in Nutritive Value Characteristics
Animal grazing performance at grass is predominately determined by herbage intake rates, with high yielding dairy cows requiring up to 20 kg/d DM within a limited grazing time (Gibb, 1998). Grass nutritional factors such as seasonal patterns in digestibility and water-soluble carbohydrate levels have been linked to animal productivity (Davies et al., 1991), while sward surface height, herbage mass, bulk density and green leaf mass have been shown to promote high grazing intake (Barrett et al., 2001). Furthermore, fatty acid profiles have been shown to improve the unsaturated fatty acid composition of milk, with potential human health benefits (Parodi, 1997). Recent CAP funding changes are expected to intensify the drive to optimise margin over costs. Given that grazed grass is the cheapest ruminant feed, it is expected that nutritive value characteristics of grass varieties will become increasingly important relative to total productivity, both as a breeding objective and as an evaluation criteria by variety testers and by farmers. Designer Reagents for Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics: Clickable Cross-Linkers for Elucidation of Protein Structures and Interactions
We present novel homobifunctional amine-reactive clickable cross-linkers (CXLs) for investigation of three-dimensional protein structures and protein–protein interactions (PPIs). CXLs afford consolidated advantages not previously available in a simple cross-linker, including (1) their small size and cationic nature at physiological pH, resulting in good water solubility and cell-permeability, (2) an alkyne group for bio-orthogonal conjugation to affinity tags via the click reaction for enrichment of cross-linked peptides, (3) a nucleophilic displacement reaction involving the 1,2,3-triazole ring formed in the click reaction, yielding a lock-mass reporter ion for only clicked peptides, and (4) higher charge states of cross-linked peptides in the gas-phase for augmented electron transfer dissociation (ETD) yields. Ubiquitin, a lysine-abundant protein, is used as a model system to demonstrate structural studies using CXLs. To validate the sensitivity of our approach, biotin-azide labeling and subsequent enrichment of cross-linked peptides are performed for cross-linked ubiquitin digests mixed with yeast cell lysates. Cross-linked peptides are detected and identified by collision induced dissociation (CID) and ETD with linear quadrupole ion trap (LTQ)-Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) and LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometers. The application of CXLs to more complex systems (e.g., in vivo cross-linking) is illustrated by Western blot detection of Cul1 complexes including known binders, Cand1 and Skp2, in HEK 293 cells, confirming good water solubility and cell-permeability
G_2 cosmological models separable in non-comoving coordinates
We study new separable orthogonally transitive abelian G_2 on S_2 models with
two mutually orthogonal integrable Killing vector fields. For this purpose we
consider separability of the metric functions in a coordinate system in which
the velocity vector field of the perfect fluid does not take its canonical
form, providing thereby solutions which are non-separable in comoving
coordinates in general. Some interesting general features concerning this class
of solutions are given. We provide a full classification for these models and

Mucociliary clearance in COPD can be increased by both a D2/β2 and a standard β2 agonists
SummaryIn addition to breathlessness and cough, excessive mucus production is one of the main symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Excess mucus coupled with deteriorating mucociliary clearance is associated with a decline in lung function and an increased risk of death from pulmonary infection. The effect of ViozanTM (Sibenadet HCI, AR-C68397AA), a novel dual D2 dopamine receptor, β2-adrenoceptor agonist, on mucociliary clearance was investigated together with that of a β2-adrenoceptor agonist, salbutamol. Using a double blind, parallel group study design, 15 patients with COPD, all habitual smokers, were randomised to receive nebulised sidenadet (3mg tid; n=7) or salbutamol (5mg tid; n=8) for 10 days. Lung mucociliary clearance rates were measured, by a standard radioaerosol technique, before and after the treatment period, as were 24-h sputum volumes. Both sibenadet and salbutamol therapies resulted in significant (P<0.02) enhancement of lung mucociliary clearance. The 24-h sputum volume was significantly reduced following sibenadet therapy (P<0.03) whereas salbutamol therapy had no effect. Our results, in addition to illustrating the effects of a standard β2 agonist on mucociliary clearance, strongly suggest the potential dual benefit of dual-agonist compounds in lessening sputum production whilst simultaneously enhancing mucociliary clearance. The AMSC mobile satellite system
The American Mobile Satellite Consortium (AMSC) Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) system is described. AMSC will use three multi-beam satellites to provide L-band MSS coverage to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The AMSC MSS system will have several noteworthy features, including a priority assignment processor that will ensure preemptive access to emergency services, a flexible SCPC channel scheme that will support a wide diversity of services, enlarged system capacity through frequency and orbit reuse, and high effective satellite transmitted power. Each AMSC satellite will make use of 14 MHz (bi-directional) of L-band spectrum. The Ku-band will be used for feeder links
Mobile satellite service in the United States
Mobile satellite service (MSS) has been under development in the United States for more than two decades. The service will soon be provided on a commercial basis by a consortium of eight U.S. companies called the American Mobile Satellite Consortium (AMSC). AMSC will build a three-satellite MSS system that will offer superior performance, reliability and cost effectiveness for organizations requiring mobile communications across the U.S. The development and operation of MSS in North America is being coordinated with Telesat Canada and Mexico. AMSC expects NASA to provide launch services in exchange for capacity on the first AMSC satellite for MSAT-X activities and for government demonstrations

based on distributional modes, which are naturally associated with a slight
modification of the standard plane-wave modes. We show that this formalism
leads to the standard Rindler temperature result, and that these modes can be

Improvements in the South African HIV care cascade: findings on 90-90-90 targets from successive population-representative surveys in North West Province.
IntroductionTo achieve epidemic control of HIV by 2030, countries aim to meet 90-90-90 targets to increase knowledge of HIV-positive status, initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and viral suppression by 2020. We assessed the progress towards these targets from 2014 to 2016 in South Africa as expanded treatment policies were introduced using population-representative surveys.MethodsData were collected in January to March 2014 and August to November 2016 in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, North West Province. Each multi-stage cluster sample included 46 enumeration areas (EA), a target of 36 dwelling units (DU) per EA, and a single resident aged 18 to 49 per DU. Data collection included behavioural surveys, rapid HIV antibody testing and dried blood spot collection. We used weighted general linear regression to evaluate differences in the HIV care continuum over time.ResultsOverall, 1044 and 971 participants enrolled in 2014 and 2016 respectively with approximately 77% undergoing HIV testing. Despite increases in reported testing, known status among people living with HIV (PLHIV) remained similar at 68.7% (95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 60.9-75.6) in 2014 and 72.8% (95% CI = 63.6-80.4) in 2016. Men were consistently less likely than women to know their status. Among those with known status, PLHIV on ART increased significantly from 80.9% (95% CI = 71.9-87.4) to 91.5% (95% CI = 84.4-95.5). Viral suppression (<5000 copies/mL using DBS) among those on ART increased significantly from 55.0% (95% CI = 39.6-70.4) in 2014 to 81.4% (95% CI = 72.0-90.8) in 2016. Among all PLHIV an estimated 72.0% (95% CI = 63.8-80.1) of women and 45.8% (95% CI = 27.0-64.7) of men achieved viral suppression by 2016.ConclusionsOver a period during which fixed-dose combination was introduced, ART eligibility expanded, and efforts to streamline treatment were implemented, major improvements in the second and third 90-90-90 targets were achieved.
