Probing Shadowed Nuclear Sea with Massive Gauge Bosons in the Future Heavy-Ion Collisions
The production of the massive bosons and could provide an
excellent tool to study cold nuclear matter effects and the modifications of
nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) relative to parton distribution
functions (PDFs) of a free proton in high energy nuclear reactions at the LHC
as well as in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) with much higher center-of mass
energies available in the future colliders. In this paper we calculate the
rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the vector boson and their
nuclear modification factors in p+Pb collisions at TeV and in
Pb+Pb collisions at TeV in the framework of perturbative QCD
by utilizing three parametrization sets of nPDFs: EPS09, DSSZ and nCTEQ. It is
found that in heavy-ion collisions at such high colliding energies, both the
rapidity distribution and the transverse momentum spectrum of vector bosons are
considerably suppressed in wide kinematic regions with respect to p+p reactions
due to large nuclear shadowing effect. We demonstrate that in the massive
vector boson productions processes with sea quarks in the initial-state may
give more contributions than those with valence quarks in the initial-state,
therefore in future heavy-ion collisions the isospin effect is less pronounced
and the charge asymmetry of W boson will be reduced significantly as compared
to that at the LHC. Large difference between results with nCTEQ and results
with EPS09 and DSSZ is observed in nuclear modifications of both rapidity and
distributions of and in the future HIC.Comment: 13 pages, 21 figures, version accepted for publication in Eur. Phys.

A follow up study on the efficacy of metadoxine in the treatment of alcohol dependence
BACKGROUND: We carried out a three months follow-up study on the efficacy of metadoxine in a cohort of alcoholics admitted to the Alcohol misuse Long-term Treatment (ALT) Unit – University of Pisa (Italy). We analyzed the clinical data, psychometric tests and blood tests of 160 alcoholics on admission and after 3 months of treatment. We compared 58 pts treated with metadoxine (MET) with 102 pts who did not receive (NULL) any drug as an adjunct to the psycho-educational interventions provided by the ALT Unit. RESULTS: At follow-up, the patients in treatment with metadoxine showed a significant improvement in the rate of complete abstinence (44.8% vs. 21.6%; chi square: 8.45, df = 1, p < 0.0037). Furthermore, the number of drop-outs at three months of treatment was also significantly lower in the MET than in the NULL group (17% vs. 57%; chi square of 23.22, df = 1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings support the use of metadoxine in the management of alcohol dependence. However, randomized clinical trials are necessary to confirm and replicate them. This study raises the importance of identifying new pharmacological compounds effective on the outcome of alcoholism in order to help patients to best adhere to treatment programs and to prevent the development of mental and physical complications due to chronic and heavy use of alcohol
Design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of tricyclic derivatives as selective RXFP4 agonists
Relaxin family peptide receptors (RXFPs) are the potential therapeutic targets for neurological, cardiovascular, and metabolic indications. Among them, RXFP3 and RXFP4 (formerly known as GPR100 or GPCR142) are homologous class A G protein-coupled receptors with short N-terminal domain. Ligands of RXFP3 or RXFP4 are only limited to endogenous peptides and their analogues, and no natural product or synthetic agonists have been reported to date except for a scaffold of indole-containing derivatives as dual agonists of RXFP3 and RXFP4. In this study, a new scaffold of tricyclic derivatives represented by compound 7a was disclosed as a selective RXFP4 agonist after a high-throughput screening campaign against a diverse library of 52,000 synthetic and natural compounds. Two rounds of structural modification around this scaffold were performed focusing on three parts: 2-chlorophenyl group, 4-hydroxylphenyl group and its skeleton including cyclohexane-1,3-dione and 1,2,4-triazole group. Compound 14b with a new skeleton of 7,9-dihydro-4H-thiopyrano[3,4-d][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-8(5H)-one was thus obtained. The enantiomers of 7a and 14b were also resolved with their 9-(S)-conformer favoring RXFP4 agonism. Compared with 7a, compound 9-(S)-14b exhibited 2.3-fold higher efficacy and better selectivity for RXFP4 (selective ratio of RXFP4 vs. RXFP3 for 9-(S)-14b and 7a were 26.9 and 13.9, respectively)
Implementation of a comprehensive intervention for patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease in rural China: A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial
Objective: This study aims to assess whether a standard intervention package of cardiovascular disease (CVD) care was being delivered effectively, and if it was associated with improved lifestyle and biomedical indicators. Methods: In rural China, we implemented a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial for 12 months, randomized at the township hospital level, and compared with usual care. Intervention case management guideline, training and performance monitoring meeting and patient support activities were designed to fit within the job description of family doctors in the township hospitals and comprised: 1) prescription of a standardised package of medicines targeted at those with hypertension or diabetes; 2) advice about specific lifestyle interventions; and 3) advice about medication adherence. Participants were 50-74 years old, had hypertension and CVD risk scores >20% or diabetes, but were excluded if a history of severe CVD events. We also randomly selected 100 participants from six selected clusters per arm as a panel to collect intermediate biomedical indicators over time. Results: A total of 28,130 participants, in 33 intervention and 34 control township hospitals, were recruited. Compared with the control arm, participants in the intervention arm had substantially improved prescribing rates of anti-hypertensives, statins and aspirin (P0.05). Conclusion: Implementation of the package by family doctors was feasible and improved prescribing and some lifestyle changes. Additional measures such as reducing medication costs and patient education are required. Trial registration: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN58988083
Multiscale correlative tomography: an investigation of creep cavitation in 316 stainless steel
Creep cavitation in an ex-service nuclear steam header Type 316 stainless steel sample is investigated through a multiscale tomography workflow spanning eight orders of magnitude, combining X-ray computed tomography (CT), plasma focused ion beam (FIB) scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) tomography. Guided by microscale X-ray CT, nanoscale X-ray CT is used to investigate the size and morphology of cavities at a triple point of grain boundaries. In order to understand the factors affecting the extent of cavitation, the orientation and crystallographic misorientation of each boundary is characterised using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Additionally, in order to better understand boundary phase growth, the chemistry of a single boundary and its associated secondary phase precipitates is probed through STEM energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tomography. The difference in cavitation of the three grain boundaries investigated suggests that the orientation of grain boundaries with respect to the direction of principal stress is important in the promotion of cavity formation
Ultra-Sensitive Hot-Electron Nanobolometers for Terahertz Astrophysics
The background-limited spectral imaging of the early Universe requires
spaceborne terahertz (THz) detectors with the sensitivity 2-3 orders of
magnitude better than that of the state-of-the-art bolometers. To realize this
sensitivity without sacrificing operating speed, novel detector designs should
combine an ultrasmall heat capacity of a sensor with its unique thermal
isolation. Quantum effects in thermal transport at nanoscale put strong
limitations on the further improvement of traditional membrane-supported
bolometers. Here we demonstrate an innovative approach by developing
superconducting hot-electron nanobolometers in which the electrons are cooled
only due to a weak electron-phonon interaction. At T<0.1K, the electron-phonon
thermal conductance in these nanodevices becomes less than one percent of the
quantum of thermal conductance. The hot-electron nanobolometers, sufficiently
sensitive for registering single THz photons, are very promising for
submillimeter astronomy and other applications based on quantum calorimetry and
photon counting.Comment: 19 pages, 3 color figure
Gaseous emissions during concurrent combustion of biomass and non-recyclable municipal solid waste
Background: Biomass and municipal solid waste offer sustainable sources of
energy; for example to meet heat and electricity demand in the form of combined
cooling, heat and power. Combustion of biomass has a lesser impact than solid
fossil fuels (e. g. coal) upon gas pollutant emissions, whilst energy recovery
from municipal solid waste is a beneficial component of an integrated,
sustainable waste management programme. Concurrent combustion of these fuels
using a fluidised bed combustor may be a successful method of overcoming some of
the disadvantages of biomass (high fuel supply and distribution costs,
combustion characteristics) and characteristics of municipal solid waste
(heterogeneous content, conflict with materials recycling). It should be
considered that combustion of municipal solid waste may be a financially
attractive disposal route if a 'gate fee' value exists for accepting waste for
combustion, which will reduce the net cost of utilising relatively more
expensive biomass fuels. Results: Emissions of nitrogen monoxide and sulphur
dioxide for combustion of biomass are suppressed after substitution of biomass
for municipal solid waste materials as the input fuel mixture. Interactions
between these and other pollutants such as hydrogen chloride, nitrous oxide and
carbon monoxide indicate complex, competing reactions occur between
intermediates of these compounds to determine final resultant emissions.
Conclusions: Fluidised bed concurrent combustion is an appropriate technique to
exploit biomass and municipal solid waste resources, without the use of fossil
fuels. The addition of municipal solid waste to biomass combustion has the
effect of reducing emissions of some gaseous pollutants
