Ionospheric response to the 2009 sudden stratospheric warming over the equatorial, low, and middle latitudes in the South American sector

The present study investigates the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and F-layer response in the Southern Hemisphere equatorial, low, and middle latitudes due to major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event, which took place during January-February 2009 in the Northern Hemisphere. In this study, using 17 ground-based dual frequency GPS stations and two ionosonde stations spanning latitudes from 2.8°N to 53.8°S, longitudes from 36.7°W to 67.8°W over the South American sector, it is observed that the ionosphere was significantly disturbed by the SSW event from the equator to the midlatitudes. During day of year 26 and 27 at 14:00 UT, the TEC was two times larger than that observed during average quiet days. The vertical TEC at all 17 GPS and two ionosonde stations shows significant deviations lasting for several days after the SSW temperature peak. Using one GPS station located at Rio Grande (53.8°S, 67.8°W, midlatitude South America sector), it is reported for the first time that the midlatitude in the Southern Hemisphere was disturbed by the SSW event in the Northern Hemisphere.Fil: Fagundes, P. Avaliação de matrizes bovinas no Pantanal.

No início do século XX inicou-sse a introdução de gado zebu, de origem indiana (Bos taurus indicus) no Pantanal. A partir de então, por meio de cruzamentos contínuos, as raças zebuínas absorveram praticamente toda a população do Tucura (Bos taurus taurus) que era o tipo predominante na região, introduzido no Século XVI (Mazza et al., 1994). Atualmente, o rebanho existente no Pantanal é zebuíno com predominância da raça Nelore, embora, recentemente, foram registradas algumas iniciativas com relação ao uso de raças compostas e de cruzamentos entre raças européias e zebuínas (Rosa, 1997). A população total é de aproximadamente 3,8 milhões de cabeças, sendo 2,8 milhões no Pantanal Sul Mato-Grossense e 1 milhão no Pantanal do Estado de Mato Grosso.bitstream/item/79547/1/COT52.pd

J/Psi suppression in colliding nuclei: statistical model analysis

We consider the $J/\Psi$ suppression at a high energy heavy ion collision. An ideal gas of massive hadrons in thermal and chemical equilibrium is formed in the central region. The finite-size gas expands longitudinally in accordance with Bjorken law. The transverse expansion in a form of the rarefaction wave is taken into account. We show that $J/\Psi$ suppression in such an environment, when combined with the disintegration in nuclear matter, gives correct evaluation of NA38 and NA50 data in a broad range of initial energy densities.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. Nesting Induced Precursor Effects: a Renormalization Group Approach

We develop a controlled weak coupling renormalization group (RG) approach to itinerant electrons. Within this formalism we rederive the phase diagram for two-dimensional (2D) non-nested systems. Then we study how nesting modifies this phase diagram. We show that competition between p-p and p-h channels, leads to the manifestation of unstable precursor fixed points in the RG flow. This effect should be experimentally measurable, and may be relevant for an explanation of pseudogaps in the high temperature superconductors (HTC), as a crossover phenomenon.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

Computability and Adaptivity in CFD

We give a brief introduction to research on adaptive computational methods for laminar compressible and incompressible flow, and then focus on computability and adaptivity for turbulent incompressible flow, where we present a framework for adaptive finite element methods with duality- based a posteriori error control for chosen output quantities of interest. We show in concrete examples that outputs such as mean values in time of drag and lift of a bluff body in a turbulent flow are computable to a tolerance of a few percent, for a simple geometry using some hundred thousand mesh points, and for complex geometries some million mesh points

New possibilities for the gauging of chiral bosons

We study a new mechanism for the electromagnetic gauging of chiral bosons showing that new possibilities emerge for the interacting theory of chiral scalars. We introduce a chirally coupled gauge field necessary to mod out the degree of freedom that obstructs gauge invariance in a system of two opposite chiral bosons soldering them together.Comment: 11 pages, Latex. Formação de grupos contemporâneos em bovinos de corte

As comparações de desempenho dos animais são realizadas com base em grupos de animais, geralmente, nascidos num mesmo ano e época, os quais são manejados de forma similar dentro de um determinado rebanho. Esses grupos são chamados de grupos de animais contemporâneos e são de fundamental importância, pois formam as bases dentro das quais, estas comparações são realizadas. Mas para que tais comparações sejam válidas e efetuadas de forma eficiente, torna-se de interesse que os grupos contemporâneos sejam constituídos de forma a permitir um número razoável de indivíduos em um mesmo grupo, que os grupos sejam conectados geneticamente e que, ao mesmo tempo, permitam o real agrupamento de indivíduos que tiveram seus desempenhos influenciados pelas mesmas condições ambientais (clima, alimentação, sanidade, manejo, etc.). Tais fatores, comuns aos conjuntos de dados, constituem alguns dos grandes entraves para a predição dos valores genéticos, que se aproximem ao máximo do verdadeiro mérito genético dos animais.
