Multiple sexual partnerships among Nigerian undergraduates: Students’ perspectives of the underlying factors

    Get PDF
Introduction:  This study explored factors influencing multiple sexual partnerships among Nigerian undergraduates.Method:  Students aged 16-30 years took part in four focus group discussions that was followed by a cross-sectional survey involving 819 students in this age group.Result:  Peer pressure and strong moral values were identified as major factors influencing multiple sexual partnerships among students. Knowledge of sexually transmitted infection (STI), living off campus and boredom were ranked less important. Ranking of factors influencing multiple sexual partnerships however varied between male and female students. Conclusion:  The study showed that students had perceptions that various individual and environmental factors influence multiple sexual partnerships. These factors were noted to either encourage or discourage multiple sexual partnerships among students but more factors were identified as encouraging such partnerships than those discouraging it. Similarly, male students tended to rank these factors as having significant influence on multiple sexual partnerships than their female counterparts

Performance of West African Dwarf (WAD) Goats Fed Tridax and Siam Weed in Ficus Based Diets

Twelve West African dwarf goats weighing between 4.5kg to 5.5kg were used to study the effect replacement of Tridax and Siam weed in Ficus based diet. The goats were divided into three dietary treatments with attention to the body weights with four replicate per treatment. The diets were fed for a period of 25days in order to investigate the influence of the replaced forage mixture on feed intake and nutrient digestibility, also on the level of the serum metabolites as factor of influence. Goats maintained on Ficus-Tridax forage mixture consumed more dry matter than goats fed Ficus only and Ficus-Siam mixture. The average values were 186.57g/day for Ficus, 202.56g/day for Ficus-Tridax mixture, and 145.0g/day for Ficus-Siam mixture per goat. The nature of the feed influence the digestibilities of the nutrients, the relative values of which  were statistically (p<0.05) significant. The values of crude fiber digestibility in the treatment were not significantly different (p<0.05). The result of serum metabolites anaylsed showed no statistical difference (p<0.05), so all the forage feeds tested could cause no harm of significant measure to the animals, results of this study suggest that Tridax can be effectively used to feed small ruminant most especially the WAD goat and it serves as alternative browse plant for the scarce forages during the dry season

From Theory to Implementation: Adaptations to a Quality Improvement Initiative According to Implementation Context

    Get PDF
As countries continue to invest in quality improvement (QI) initiatives in health facilities, it is important to acknowledge the role of context in implementation. We conducted a qualitative study between February 2019 and January 2020 to explore how a QI initiative was adapted to enable implementation in three facility types: primary health centres, public hospitals and private facilities in Lagos State, Nigeria. Despite a common theory of change, implementation of the initiative needed to be adapted to accommodate the local needs, priorities and organisational culture of each facility type. Across facility types, inadequate human and capital resources constrained implementation and necessitated an extension of the initiative’s duration. In public facilities, the local governance structure was adapted to facilitate coordination, but similar adaptations to governance were not possible for private facilities. Our findings highlight the importance of anticipating and planning for the local adaptation of QI initiatives according to implementation environment

Associated risk factors of STIs and multiple sexual relationships among youths in Malawi

Having unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners (MSP) is the greatest risk factor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among youths. Young people with MSPs are less likely to use a condom and the greater the risk for STIs. This study examines the associated risk factors of STIs and multiple sexual partnerships among youths aged 15–24 years. The Malawi Demographic Health Survey 2010 data was used. Out of a sample of 2,987 males and 9,559 females aged 15–24 years, 2,026 males and 6,470 females were considered in the study. Chi square test and logistic regression techniques were performed. Analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.Article writing fellowships were received from the Research Development Office, University of the Western Cape, 7535 Bellville, Cape Town, South Africa.Web of Scienc

The study was conducted at the dental clinic of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife. A total of 100 carious samples were collected from children of varying age and sexes. The bacteria isolated were S. mutans: 45.6%, Lactobacillus spp: 41.2% and S. aureus: 13.2%. Out of the 100 samples, 88(5) had mixed growth of bacteria and the common bacteria combinations were S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp.(43.2%) , S. mutans and.S. aureus (38.6%) and Lactocillus spp and S. aureus (18.2%)The distribution pattern of dental caries in relation to gender showed a higher frequency in females than males with the initiator S. mutans having 565.8% in female and 44.2% in males. The organisms appear to be more prevalent in children of 6-10 years considering the initiator S. mutans being 73.1% while ages 1-5 years were least affected with 5.8%. prevalence. Pefloxacin, Chloramphenicol, Ceftriaxone and Ciprofloxacin are most effective against the caries-inducing organisms with an average susceptibility range of 76.1% to 92.2%.
