On Max-Stable Processes and the Functional D-Norm
We introduce a functional domain of attraction approach for stochastic
processes, which is more general than the usual one based on weak convergence.
The distribution function G of a continuous max-stable process on [0,1] is
introduced and it is shown that G can be represented via a norm on functional
space, called D-norm. This is in complete accordance with the multivariate case
and leads to the definition of functional generalized Pareto distributions
(GPD) W. These satisfy W=1+log(G) in their upper tails, again in complete
accordance with the uni- or multivariate case.
Applying this framework to copula processes we derive characterizations of
the domain of attraction condition for copula processes in terms of tail
equivalence with a functional GPD.
\delta-neighborhoods of a functional GPD are introduced and it is shown that
these are characterized by a polynomial rate of convergence of functional
extremes, which is well-known in the multivariate case.Comment: 22 page

Almost forty years after the enactment of Title VII, women\u27s struggle for equality in the workplace continues. Although Title VII was intended to âbreak[] down old patterns of segregation and hierarchy,â the American workplace remains largely gender-segregated. Indeed, more than one-third of all women workers are employed in occupations in which the percentage of women exceeds 80%. Even in disciplines in which women have made gains, top status (and top paying) jobs remain male-dominated while the lower status jobs are filled by women. This pattern of gender segregation, in turn, accounts for a substantial part of the persistent wage gap between men and women. As of the end of 2001, women working full-time still earned only seventy-six cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. Thus, we have not only the persistence of job segregation, but job segregation with particular implications for equalityâmen are on top and remain there. The central question addressed by this essay is âWhy?â Why has gender segregation of the work force persisted so stubbornly in the face of Title VII and myriad state antidiscrimination statutes? This essay explores the relationship between our common understanding of discrimination and the continuation of gender segregation and suggests that the elimination of discrimination as it has been defined under Title VII might well leave undisturbed a significant amount of gender segregation, regarding it as a product of individual choice rather than workplace bias. This essay also explores the operation of this rhetoric of choice in specific examples from Title VII doctrine and turns to feminist critiques of the concept of individual choice or agency, suggesting that, although feminists have called into question assumptions about women\u27s agency under patriarchy, these critiques have been too limited in the Title VII context. The essay concludes by suggesting ways in which feminist critiques of agency might be brought to bear more effectively in a challenge to workplace segregation
The auditory anatomy of the minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) : a potential fatty sound reception pathway in a baleen whale

Odontoceti (toothed whales) are thought to receive sound through specialized fat bodies that contact the tympanoperiotic complex, the bones housing the middle and inner ears. However, sound reception pathways remain unknown in Mysticeti (baleen whales), which have very different cranial anatomies compared to odontocetes. Here, we report a potential fatty sound reception pathway in the minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), a mysticete of the balaenopterid family. The cephalic anatomy of seven minke whales was investigated using computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, verified through dissections. Findings include a large, well-formed fat body lateral, dorsal, and posterior to the mandibular ramus and lateral to the tympanoperiotic complex. This fat body inserts into the tympanoperiotic complex at the lateral aperture between the tympanic and periotic bones and is in contact with the ossicles. There is also a second, smaller body of fat found within the tympanic bone, which contacts the ossicles as well. This is the first analysis of these fatty tissues' association with the auditory structures in a mysticete, providing anatomical evidence that fatty sound reception pathways may not be a unique feature of odontocete cetaceans
Frequent, Geographically Structured Heteroplasmy in the Mitochondria of a Flowering Plant, Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)
Recent research has convincingly documented cases of mitochondrial heteroplasmy in a small set of wild and cultivated plant species. Heteroplasmy is suspected to be common in flowering plants and investigations of additional taxa may help understand the mechanisms generating heteroplasmy as well as its effects on plant phenotypes. The role of mitochondrial heteroplasmy is of particular interest in plants as cytoplasmic male sterility is controlled by mitochondrial genotypes, sometimes leading to co-occurring female and hermaphroditic individuals (gynodioecy). Paternal leakage may be important in the evolution of mating systems in such populations. We conducted a genetic survey of the gynodioecious plant Plantago lanceolata, in which heteroplasmy has not previously been reported, and estimated the frequencies of mitochondrial genotypes and heteroplasmy. Sanger sequence genotyping of 179 individuals from 15 European populations for two polymorphic mitochondrial loci, atp6 and rps12, identified 15 heteroplasmic individuals. These were distributed among 6 of the 10 populations that had polymorphisms in the target loci and represented 8% of all sampled individuals and 15% of the individuals in those 6 populations. The incidence was highest in Northern England and Scotland. Our results are consistent with geographic differences in the incidence of paternal leakage and/or the rates of nuclear restoration of male fertility
Characteristics of fast voluntary and electrically evoked isometric knee extensions during 56Â days of bed rest with and without exercise countermeasure
The contractile characteristics of fast voluntary and electrically evoked unilateral isometric knee extensions were followed in 16 healthy men during 56 days of horizontal bed rest and assessed at bed rest days 4, 7, 10, 17, 24, 38 and 56. Subjects were randomized to either an inactive control group (Ctrl, n = 8) or a resistive vibration exercise countermeasure group (RVE, n = 8). No changes were observed in neural activation, indicated by the amplitude of the surface electromyogram, or the initial rate of voluntary torque development in either group during bed rest. In contrast, for Ctrl, the force oscillation amplitude at 10 Hz stimulation increased by 48% (P < 0.01), the time to reach peak torque at 300 Hz stimulation decreased by 7% (P < 0.01), and the half relaxation time at 150 Hz stimulation tended to be slightly reduced by 3% (P = 0.056) after 56 days of bed rest. No changes were observed for RVE. Torque production at 10 Hz stimulation relative to maximal (150 Hz) stimulation was increased after bed rest for both Ctrl (15%; P < 0.05) and RVE (41%; P < 0.05). In conclusion, bed rest without exercise countermeasure resulted in intrinsic speed properties of a faster knee extensor group, which may have partly contributed to the preserved ability to perform fast voluntary contractions. The changes in intrinsic contractile properties were prevented by resistive vibration exercise, and voluntary motor performance remained unaltered for RVE subjects as well
