Maturity models and safety culture: A critical review

    Get PDF
The available evidence suggests that maturity models are a popular means of assessing safety culture in organisations. The aim of the present study was to review their conceptual underpinnings and roots, as well as provide details of how they have been used to assess safety culture (e.g., types of methods used, coverage of safety domains). A total of 41 publications were reviewed based on a set of selection criteria (e.g., studies which explicitly reported data or a case study which used a maturity model). The findings indicate steady growth in the use of maturity models to assess safety culture particularly within domains such as construction, the oil and gas industries and healthcare. We also found that most studies focus on providing a descriptive account of safety culture using maturity models and make limited attempts to assess the reliability/validity of outcomes from their use. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of maturity models in the light of our findings, alongside identifying a number of new directions for future work of relevance to safety researchers and practitioners (e.g., the need for more detailed case studies of the use of maturity models to assess safety, as well as more attention to the underlying theory guiding use of maturity models)

Farm studies in Iraq : an agro-economic study of the agriculture of the Hilla-Diwaniya area in Iraq

    Get PDF
For a scheme of land improvement, an agro-economic survey was carried out in the Hilla-Diwaniya area in Iraq during 1958-9. After presenting general economic setting, the methods of obtaining the farm data were discussed. A classification was given of the areas studied. The economic data were compiled and analysed under the following main headings: population, land use and cropping pattern (including cultivation practices), livestock production, tenancy conditions, the farming unit, farmer's income, dietary habits and food intake. Some general relations in subsistence farming were tested for the agriculture of the Hilla-Diwaniya area. By regression analysis the relation was analysed between farm size and labour force, between yield of barley and farm size, net income and farm size and between gross and net income and labour force

Three-dimensional blood flow in bifurcations : computational and experimental analyses and clinical applications

    Get PDF
In this report, the issues discussed at a multidisciplinary symposium on blood flow in bifurcations are summarized. Topics adressed are (1) flow analysis in vitro models, using visualization and laser Doppler anemometer techniques, and numerical models; (2) the influence of (physiological) factors, such as vessel wall distensibility and vessel geometry, on the flow field; (3) the noninvasive assessment of arterial wall properties in humans, and (4) the noninvasive determination of flow patterns in humans, paying special attention to ultrasound techniques and magnetic resonance imaging. It was empasized that it is of utmost importance to obtain more detailed information, preferably three-dimensional, about flow field in bifurcations, not only from a diagnostic point of view but also to get more insight into the relation, if any, in between flow patterns and atheregenesis. It was agreed that plaque geometry and dynamics should be studied in more detail, especially in relation to plaque fissuring and rupturing. There is a need for the noninvasive assessment of wall shear rate and, hence, to be able to calculate wall shear stress, because these parameters have been shown to be important determinants of endothelial cell function

Marriage is one of the commands that are highly recommended to all mankind. Human as a legal subject has the right to exercise legal powers granted by the Act. Each individual legal authority to perform marriages has been clearly regulated in Law Number 1 of 1974 on Marriage. This paper describes the factors that cause the occurrence of early marriages in the city of Manado North Sulawesi Province. The number of respondents in this paper is of 100 people by employing qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the main factors that led to the early marriage in the city of Manado are pregnancies due to promiscuity. Other factors are the lack of knowledge of parents and children on the rules of marriage, economic factors and their marriage dispensation from the court. Keywords: Marriage, the underage children
