    The interrater reliability of static palpation of the thoracic spine for eliciting tenderness and stiffness to test for a manipulable lesion

    Background Despite widespread use by manual therapists, there is little evidence regarding the reliability of thoracic spine static palpation to test for a manipulable lesion using stiffness or tenderness as diagnostic markers. We aimed to determine the interrater agreement of thoracic spine static palpation for segmental tenderness and stiffness and determine the effect of standardised training for examiners. The secondary aim was to explore expert consensus on the level of segmental tenderness required to locate a “manipulable lesion”. Methods Two experienced chiropractors used static palpation of thoracic vertebrae on two occasions (pragmatic and standardised approaches). Participants rated tenderness on an 11-point numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) and raters judged segmental stiffness based on their experience and perception of normal mobility with the requested outcomes of hypomobile or normal mobility. We calculated interrater agreement using percent agreement, Cohen’s Kappa coefficients (Îș) and prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted Kappa coefficients (PABAK). In a preliminary study, an expert panel of 10 chiropractors took part in a Delphi process to identify the level of meaningful segmental tenderness required to locate a “manipulable lesion”. Results Thirty-six participants (20 female) were enrolled for the reliability study on the 13th March 2017. Mean (SD) age was 22.4 (3.4) years with an equal distribution of asymptomatic (n = 17) and symptomatic (n = 17) participants. Overall, the interrater agreement for spinal segmental stiffness had Kappa values indicating less than chance agreement [Îș range − 0.11, 0.53]. When adjusted for prevalence and bias, the PABAK ranged from slight to substantial agreement [0.12–0.76] with moderate or substantial agreement demonstrated at the majority of spinal levels (T1, T2 and T6 to T12). Generally, there was fair to substantial agreement for segmental tenderness [Kappa range 0.22–0.77]. Training did not significantly improve interrater agreement for stiffness or tenderness. The Delphi process indicated that an NPRS score of 2 out of 10 identified a potential “manipulable lesion”. Conclusion Static palpation was overall moderately reliable for the identification of segmental thoracic spine stiffness and tenderness, with tenderness demonstrating a higher reliability. Also, an increased agreement was found within the mid-thoracic spine. A brief training intervention failed to improve reliability

    Data on the number and frequency of scientific literature citations for established medulloblastoma cell lines

    This article collates information about the number of scientific articles mentioning each of the established medulloblastoma cell lines, derived through a systematic search of Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar in 2016. The data for each cell line have been presented as raw number of citations, percentage share of the total citations for each search engine and as an average percentage between the three search engines. In order to correct for the time since each cell line has been in use, the raw citation data have also been divided by the number of years since the derivation of each cell line. This is a supporting article for a review of in vitro models of medulloblastoma published in “in vitro models of medulloblastoma: choosing the right tool for the job” (D.P. Ivanov, D.A. Walker, B. Coyle, A.M. Grabowska, 2016) [1]

    Potential risk factors and triggers for back pain in children and young adults. A scoping review, part I: Incident and episodic back pain

    Background The one-month prevalence of back pain in children and adolescents has been reported at 33, 28 and 48% at ages 9, 13 and 15 respectively. There are many suspected risk factors and triggers of back pain in young people. Objective The purpose of this scoping review was to identify potential risk factors and potential triggers for back pain in young people. The purpose of part I was to identify potential risk factors for incident and episodic back pain in young people. Part II included all eligible studies with unclear or mixed types of back pain. Methods Due to the vast number of studies on “risk factors” for back pain, a two-part scoping review of the literature was chosen as the best way to summarise the evidence. We adhered to the PRISMA-ScR guideline for scoping reviews. General potential risk factors and triggers for back pain in children and young adults (≀ 24 years) were included, incorporating physical, environmental, and/or physiological factors. A search was conducted using PubMed and Cochrane databases from inception to September 2018, limited to the English language. Within part I, and because of their importance, only the results of the studies that investigated risk factors of incident back pain and back pain episodes are presented. Results The search identified 7356 articles, of which 91 articles were eligible for this scoping review. The majority of the eligible articles had an unclear definition of back pain (results presented in scoping review part II). There were 7 inception cohort studies included and 1 cohort study that met the criteria for part I. The most consistent risk factors for incident and episodic back pain are female sex and older age. Conclusion Due to inconsistent ways of reporting on the type of back pain, no definitive risk factor for back pain has been identified. In general, females often report more symptoms, also for other diseases, and older age is not a useful risk factor as it merely indicates that the onset may not be in childhood. Clearly, the time has come to study the causes of back pain from different angles

    Effects of Adenosine on Inositol 1,4,5‐Trisphosphate Formation and Intracellular Calcium Changes in Formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe‐Stimulated Human Neutrophils

    In the presence of adenosine, formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe‐stimulated human neutrophils show a greatly diminished production of superoxide anion. Analysis of changes in levels of intracellular calcium revealed that the immediate increase (occurring within seconds) in intracellular calcium following addition of formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe is not affected by the presence of adenosine, although there are significantly lower intracellular calcium levels during the late phase (occurring 1–4 min after addition of formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe). Consistent with these findings is the fact that adenosine does not affect the production of inositol 1,4,5‐trisphosphate in formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe‐stimulated neutrophils. These data suggest that the profound inhibitory effects of adenosine on superoxide responses in formyl‐Met‐Leu‐Phe‐stimulated neutrophils may be related to an action of adenosine occurring late in the sequence of events of signal transduction.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/141119/1/jlb0281.pd

    The ability of a host plant to associate with different symbiotic partners affects ectomycorrhizal functioning

    Some plants that associate with ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are also able to simultaneously establish symbiosis with other types of partners. The presence of alternative partners that may provide similar benefits may affect ECM functioning. Here we compared potential leucine-aminopeptidase (LA) and acid phosphatase (AP) enzyme activity (involved in N and P cycling, respectively) in ECM fungi of three hosts planted under the same conditions but differing in the type of partners: Pinus (ECM fungi only), Eucalyptus (ECM and arbuscular mycorrhizal -AM- fungi) and Acacia (ECM, AM fungi and rhizobial bacteria). We found that the ECM community on Acacia and Eucalyptus had higher potential AP activity than the Pinus community. The ECM community in Acacia also showed increased potential LA activity compared to Pinus. Morphotypes present in more than one host showed higher potential AP and LA activity when colonizing Acacia than when colonizing another host. Our results suggest that competition with AM fungi and rhizobial bacteria could promote increased ECM activity in Eucalyptus and Acacia. Alternatively, other host-related differences such as ECM community composition could also play a role.     Absence of FMLP Receptors on Rat Macrophages

    Although rat peritoneal neutrophils in the presence of cytochalasin B demonstrate superoxide (O2‐) responses to the chemotactic peptide N’‐formyl‐met‐leu‐phe (FMLP), neither elicited rat peritoneal macrophages nor rat alveolar macrophages show an O2‐response to FMLP (in the presence or absence of cytochalasin B), although a good O2‐response to opsonized zymosan is demonstrated by both types of macrophages. Using Fura‐2 loaded cells, peritoneal macrophages failed to show an increase in intracellular calcium after exposure to FMLP, f‐nor‐leu‐phe, F‐met‐met‐met, or F‐norleu‐leu‐phe‐norleu‐lys. FMLP also failed to induce elevations in intracellular calcium in alveolar macrophages. In 3H‐FMLP binding studies, the lack of responsiveness of peritoneal and alveolar macrophages was associated with the lack of FMLP receptors on these cell types, in striking contrast to the presence of functional receptors on rat neutrophils.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/141351/1/jlb0600.pd

    The distance to galactic globular clusters through RR Lyrae pulsational properties

    By adopting the same approach outlined in De Santis & Cassisi (1999), we evaluate the absolute bolometric magnitude of the Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) at the level of the RR Lyrae variable instability strip in selected galactic globular clusters. This allows us to estimate the ZAHB absolute visual magnitude for these clusters and to investigate its dependence on the cluster metallicity. The derived MV(ZAHB)−[Fe/H]M_V(ZAHB) - [Fe/H] relation, corrected in order to account for the luminosity difference between the ZAHB and the mean RR Lyrae magnitude, has been compared with some of the most recent empirical determinations in this field, as the one provided by Baade-Wesselink analyses, RR Lyrae periods, Hipparcos data for field variables and Main Sequence fitting based on Hipparcos parallaxes for field subdwarfs. As a result, our relation provides a clear support to the "long" distance scale. We discuss also another method for measuring the distance to galactic globular clusters. This method is quite similar to the one adopted for estimating the absolute bolometric magnitude of the ZAHB but it relies only on the pulsational properties of the Lyrae variables in each cluster. The reliability and accuracy of this method has been tested by applying it to a sample of globulars for which, due to the morphology of their horizontal branch (HB), the use of the commonly adopted ZAHB fitting is a risky procedure.Comment: 7 pages, 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication on MNRA
