Selective recovery of copper from a synthetic metalliferous waste stream using the thiourea-functionalized ion exchange resin Puromet MTS9140
The extraction of Cu from mixed-metal acidic solutions by the thiourea-functionalized resin Puromet MTS9140 was studied. Despite being originally manufactured for precious metal recovery, a high selectivity towards Cu was observed over other first-row transition metals (>90% removal), highlighting a potential for this resin in base metal recovery circuits. Resin behaviour was characterised in batch-mode under a range of pH and sulphate concentrations and as a function of flow rate in a fixed-bed setup. In each instance, a high selectivity and capacity (max. 32.04 mg/g) towards Cu was observed and was unaffected by changes in solution chemistry. The mechanism of extraction was determined by XPS to be through reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) rather than chelation. Elution of Cu was achieved by the use of 0.5 M–1 M NaClO3. Despite effective Cu elution (82%), degradation of resin functionality was observed, and further detailed through the application of IC analysis to identify degradation by-products. This work is the first detailed study of a thiourea-functionalized resin being used to selectively target Cu from a complex multi-metal solution
Statistical Mechanics of 2+1 Gravity From Riemann Zeta Function and Alexander Polynomial:Exact Results
In the recent publication (Journal of Geometry and Physics,33(2000)23-102) we
demonstrated that dynamics of 2+1 gravity can be described in terms of train
tracks. Train tracks were introduced by Thurston in connection with description
of dynamics of surface automorphisms. In this work we provide an example of
utilization of general formalism developed earlier. The complete exact solution
of the model problem describing equilibrium dynamics of train tracks on the
punctured torus is obtained. Being guided by similarities between the dynamics
of 2d liquid crystals and 2+1 gravity the partition function for gravity is
mapped into that for the Farey spin chain. The Farey spin chain partition
function, fortunately, is known exactly and has been thoroughly investigated
recently. Accordingly, the transition between the pseudo-Anosov and the
periodic dynamic regime (in Thurston's terminology) in the case of gravity is
being reinterpreted in terms of phase transitions in the Farey spin chain whose
partition function is just a ratio of two Riemann zeta functions. The mapping
into the spin chain is facilitated by recognition of a special role of the
Alexander polynomial for knots/links in study of dynamics of self
homeomorphisms of surfaces. At the end of paper, using some facts from the
theory of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds (initiated by Bianchi in 1892), we
develop systematic extension of the obtained results to noncompact Riemannian
surfaces of higher genus. Some of the obtained results are also useful for 3+1
gravity. In particular, using the theorem of Margulis, we provide new reasons
for the black hole existence in the Universe: black holes make our Universe
arithmetic. That is the discrete Lie groups of motion are arithmetic.Comment: 69 pages,11 figures. Journal of Geometry and Physics (in press
Metal recovery from jarosite waste - A resin screening study
Work has been carried out screening hydrometallurgical resins for application in the valorization of industrially produced jarosite. Of the seven resins tested, anion exchange resins performed poorly for valuable metal recovery. Purolite S950+ and S957, along with a strong acid resin, show good extraction properties, but are selective for Fe3+ over the other (divalent) metals. Purolite S930+ (iminodiacetic acid-functionalized resin) demonstrates selectivity for Cu2+ over Fe3+, but poor selectivity for Ni2+, Zn2+, and Co2+. Dowex M4195 (bispicolylamine-functionalized resin) demonstrates promise for extracting metals of value away from a mixed metal pregnant liquor solution (PLS). A three-stage column-based recovery process is proposed for jarosite leachate treatment
Constraints on the Dense Matter Equation of State and Neutron Star Properties from NICER's Mass-Radius Estimate of PSR J0740+6620 and Multimessenger Observations
In recent years our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars has significantly improved by analyzing multimessenger data from radio/X-ray pulsars, gravitational wave events, and from nuclear physics constraints. Here we study the additional impact on the EOS from the jointly estimated mass and radius of PSR J0740+6620, presented in Riley et al. (2021) by analyzing a combined dataset from X-ray telescopes NICER and XMM-Newton. We employ two different high-density EOS parameterizations: a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in a neutron star (CS). At nuclear densities these are connected to microscopic calculations of neutron matter based on chiral effective field theory interactions. In addition to the new NICER data for this heavy neutron star, we separately study constraints from the radio timing mass measurement of PSR J0740+6620, the gravitational wave events of binary neutron stars GW190425 and GW170817, and for the latter the associated kilonova AT2017gfo. By combining all these, and the NICER mass-radius estimate of PSR J0030+0451 we find the radius of a 1.4 solar mass neutron star to be constrained to the 95% credible ranges 12.33^{+0.76}_{-0.81} km (PP model) and 12.18^{+0.56}_{-0.79} km (CS model). In addition, we explore different chiral effective field theory calculations and show that the new NICER results provide tight constraints for the pressure of neutron star matter at around twice saturation density, which shows the power of these observations to constrain dense matter interactions at intermediate densities
The role of silicon in drug discovery : a review
This review aims to highlight the role of silicon in drug discovery. Silicon and carbon are often regarded as being similar with silicon located directly beneath carbon in the same group in the periodic table. That being noted, in many instances a clear dichotomy also exists between silicon and carbon, and these differences often lead to vastly different physiochemical and biological properties. As a result, the utility of silicon in drug discovery has attracted significant attention and has grown rapidly over the past decade. This review showcases some recent advances in synthetic organosilicon chemistry and examples of the ways in which silicon has been employed in the drug-discovery field. The CSIR Parliamentary Grant, the National Research Foundation (NRF, South Africa), Competitive Support for Unrated Researchers and Stellenbosch University.https://pubs.rsc.org/en/journals/journal/mdhj2024ChemistrySDG-03:Good heatlh and well-bein
Superdeformed rotational bands in the Mercury region; A Cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov study
A study of rotational properties of the ground superdeformed bands in \Hg{0},
\Hg{2}, \Hg{4}, and \Pb{4} is presented. We use the cranked
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the {\skm} parametrization of the Skyrme
force in the particle-hole channel and a seniority interaction in the pairing
channel. An approximate particle number projection is performed by means of the
Lipkin-Nogami prescription. We analyze the proton and neutron quasiparticle
routhians in connection with the present information on about thirty presently
observed superdeformed bands in nuclei close neighbours of \Hg{2}.Comment: 26 LaTeX pages, 14 uuencoded postscript figures included, Preprint
