Analytical solution of generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank equations for growth and post--growth equilibration on vicinal surfaces
We investigate growth on vicinal surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy making
use of a generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank model. Our primary aim is to
propose and implement a novel analytical program based on a perturbative
solution of the non--linear equations describing the coupled adatom and dimer
kinetics. These equations are considered as originating from a fully
microscopic description that allows the step boundary conditions to be directly
formulated in terms of the sticking coefficients at each step. As an example,
we study the importance of diffusion barriers for adatoms hopping down
descending steps (Schwoebel effect) during growth and post-growth equilibration
of the surface.Comment: 16 pages, REVTeX 3.0, IC-DDV-94-00
The spatial organization of multinational firms
Using six years of firm-level data covering 224 regions of the enlarged European Union, we evaluate the importance to a firm of locating its activities (production, headquarters, R&D, logistics and sales) close together. We find that, after controlling for regional characteristics, being closely located to a previous investment positively affects firm location choice. However, the impact of distance is dependent on the type of investment (production or service). The impact dies out faster for service activities. Finally, we show that a surprisingly positive effect comes from locating a new production plant close to an existing production investment, but in another country
Metalanguage in L1 English-speaking 12-year-olds: which aspects of writing do they talk about?
Traditional psycholinguistic approaches to metalinguistic awareness in L1 learners elicit responses containing metalanguage that demonstrates metalinguistic awareness
of pre-determined aspects of language knowledge. This paper, which takes a more ethnographic approach, demonstrates how pupils are able to engage their own focus of metalanguage when reflecting on their everyday learning activities involving written language. What is equally significant is what their metalanguage choices reveal about
their understanding and application of written language concepts
Quantum theory of resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing: mean-field and exact numerical solutions
We present a full quantum analysis of resonant forward four-wave mixing based
on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In particular, we study the
regime of efficient nonlinear conversion with low-intensity fields that has
been predicted from a semiclassical analysis. We derive an effective nonlinear
interaction Hamiltonian in the adiabatic limit. In contrast to conventional
nonlinear optics this Hamiltonian does not have a power expansion in the fields
and the conversion length increases with the input power. We analyze the
stationary wave-mixing process in the forward scattering configuration using an
exact numerical analysis for up to input photons and compare the results
with a mean-field approach. Due to quantum effects, complete conversion from
the two pump fields into the signal and idler modes is achieved only
asymptotically for large coherent pump intensities or for pump fields in
few-photon Fock states. The signal and idler fields are perfectly quantum
correlated which has potential applications in quantum communication schemes.
We also discuss the implementation of a single-photon phase gate for continuous
quantum computation.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Laser induced breakdown of the magnetic field reversal symmetry in the propagation of unpolarized light
We show how a medium, under the influece of a coherent control field which is
resonant or close to resonance to an appropriate atomic transition, can lead to
very strong asymmetries in the propagation of unpolarized light when the
direction of the magnetic field is reversed. We show how EIT can be used to
mimic effects occuring in natural systems and that EIT can produce very large
asymmetries as we use electric dipole allowed transitions. Using density matrix
calculations we present results for the breakdown of the magnetic field
reversal symmetry for two different atomic configurations.Comment: RevTex, 6 pages, 10 figures, Two Column format, submitted to Phys.

Resonant nonlinear optics of backward waves in negative-index metamaterials
The extraordinary properties of resonant four-wave mixing of backward waves
in doped negative-index materials are investigated. The feasibility of
independent engineering of negative refractive index and nonlinear optical
response as well as quantum control of the nonlinear propagation process in
such composites is shown due to the coherent energy transfer from the control
to the signal field. Laser-induced transparency, quantum switching,
frequency-tunable narrow-band filtering, amplification, and realizing a
miniature mirrorless optical parametric generator of the entangled backward and
ordinary waves are among the possible applications of the investigated
processes.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Phase Coherence and Control of Stored Photonic Information
We report the demonstration of phase coherence and control for the recently
developed "light storage" technique. Specifically, we use a pulsed magnetic
field to vary the phase of atomic spin excitations which result from the
deceleration and storing of a light pulse in warm Rb vapor. We then convert the
spin excitations back into light and detect the resultant phase shift in an
optical interferometric measurement. The coherent storage of photon states in
matter is essential for the practical realization of many basic concepts in
quantum information processing.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Elastic interactions of active cells with soft materials
Anchorage-dependent cells collect information on the mechanical properties of
the environment through their contractile machineries and use this information
to position and orient themselves. Since the probing process is anisotropic,
cellular force patterns during active mechanosensing can be modelled as
anisotropic force contraction dipoles. Their build-up depends on the mechanical
properties of the environment, including elastic rigidity and prestrain. In a
finite sized sample, it also depends on sample geometry and boundary conditions
through image strain fields. We discuss the interactions of active cells with
an elastic environment and compare it to the case of physical force dipoles.
Despite marked differences, both cases can be described in the same theoretical
framework. We exactly solve the elastic equations for anisotropic force
contraction dipoles in different geometries (full space, halfspace and sphere)
and with different boundary conditions. These results are then used to predict
optimal position and orientation of mechanosensing cells in soft material.Comment: Revtex, 38 pages, 8 Postscript files included; revised version,

Full quantum solutions to the resonant four-wave mixing of two single-photon wave packets
We analyze both analytically and numerically the resonant four-wave mixing of
two co-propagating single-photon wave packets. We present analytic expressions
for the two-photon wave function and show that soliton-type quantum solutions
exist which display a shape-preserving oscillatory exchange of excitations
between the modes. Potential applications including quantum information
processing are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
