Achievements and prospects of grass pea ( Lathyrus sativus L.) improvement for sustainable food production

    Get PDF
Grass pea offers an attractive choice for sustainable food production, owing to its intrinsic properties including limited water requirement and drought tolerance. However, low productivity and the presence of a neurotoxin (ODAP) have posed major obstacles to its genetic improvement. Also, biotechnological investments remain limited and the genome is complex and not well understood. Strategies that allow identification of genotypes with reduced ODAP content, coupling of low ODAP content with enhanced yield, and effective seed detoxification methods merit immediate attention. Breeder-friendly genomic tools are being increasingly made available to improve the efficiency of breeding protocols. To this end, the application of next-generation sequencing has provided a means of leveraging the repertoire of genomic resources for this somewhat neglected crop. In this review, we describe progress achieved in Lathyrus genetic improvement. We also explore potential opportunities in Lathyrus research and identify urgent research needs

    An electrochemically impregnated sintered-nickel electrode

    Get PDF
An electrochemically impregnated sintered-nickel porous electrode with a capacity of 225 ± 10 mAh per g of active material has been developed. This capacity is comparable with any state-of-the-art nickel hydroxide electrode reported in the literature, such as the stabilized α-nickel hydroxides that contain aluminium, iron and other trivalent cations. A technical update on various types of nickel positive electrodes is given

ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION: AN INSIGHT INTO SUSTAINABLE AND INCLUSIVE AGRICULTURE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO PAKISTAN

    Get PDF
Crop diversification is an important step to deal with the challenges of present and future faced today by agriculture economies. Population explosion in agriculture economies surpassed carrying capacity of resources so endangering inclusion. Our research on economic diversification and government reform measure particularly in agriculture is to deal with sustainability of agriculture economy like Pakistan. The main objective of this paper is to analyze how economic diversification and land reform can prove to be a milestone in tackling the challenges faced by agriculture economy. In order to perform numerical and qualitative analysis of primary and secondary data, the analysis is shown through the SPSS Software. As a result, it was known that through diversification and land reforms, Pakistan's agricultural economy will be strengthened. At the end of the paper, some effective suggestion regarding inclusive agriculture model have been given, which will be important in achieving the said objectives

The spatial organization of multinational firms

Using six years of firm-level data covering 224 regions of the enlarged European Union, we evaluate the importance to a firm of locating its activities (production, headquarters, R&D, logistics and sales) close together. We find that, after controlling for regional characteristics, being closely located to a previous investment positively affects firm location choice. However, the impact of distance is dependent on the type of investment (production or service). The impact dies out faster for service activities. Finally, we show that a surprisingly positive effect comes from locating a new production plant close to an existing production investment, but in another country

Electrochemically Impregnated Aluminum-Stabilized α-Nickel Hydroxide Electrodes

Nickel-positive electrodes obtained by electrochemical impregnation of aluminum-substituted α-nickel hydroxide are found to deliver a reversible discharge capacity of ca. 450 mAh/g. This is much higher than the capacity of β-nickel hydroxide electrodes 200 mAh/g: this work; 225 mAh/g: Dixit et al., J. Power Sources, 63, 167 (1996) prepared under identical conditions and pasted electrodes comprising cobalt-doped nickel hydroxide 345 mAh/g: Faure et al., J. Power Sources, 36, 497 (1991). These observations suggest that the theoretical target-capacity for high-performance nickel-positive electrodes must be revised from the currently accepted value of 289 mAh/g (1e exchange) to 491 mAh/g 1.7e exchange: Corrigan and Knight, J. Evaluation of Vertical Coherence Length, Twist and Microstrain of GaAs / Si Epilayers Using Modified Williamson-Hall Analysis

    Get PDF
Modified Williamson-Hall (WH) analysis is used to determine the reliable values of the microstructures for Zincblende epilayers grown on non-polar substrates. Systematic high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) experiments are performed for several skew symmetric reflections which enable an accurate measurement of the values of vertical coherence length (VCL) and microstrain of GaAs epilayers grown on Si. Furthermore, a simple method based on the orientation of Burgers vector is proposed for estimating the ratio of tilt and twist. In this method, the twist can be found easily once tilt is known. It is rather quick and the measured values of twist are very similar to those which are otherwise estimated by acquiring numerous HRXRD scans along with tedious fitting procedures. Presence of 60 mixed dislocations is confirmed from the cross sectional high resolution transmission electron microscope images of GaAs / Si samples. Furthermore, the estimated value of VCL is equivalent to the layer thickness measured by the surface profiler. Awareness, perception and practices regarding infant and young child feeding among health care providers in two districts of Madhya Pradesh: a cross-sectional study

    Get PDF
Introduction Infant and young child nutrition needs to be given top priority in order to prevent and minimize malnutrition given the low rates of child feeding practices. The present study was carried out to assess the awareness, perception and practices of health care providers (HCPs) regarding (IYCF) practices in Madhya Pradesh

Investment under ambiguity with the best and worst in mind

    Get PDF
Recent literature on optimal investment has stressed the difference between the impact of risk and the impact of ambiguity - also called Knightian uncertainty - on investors' decisions. In this paper, we show that a decision maker's attitude towards ambiguity is similarly crucial for investment decisions. We capture the investor's individual ambiguity attitude by applying alpha-MEU preferences to a standard investment problem. We show that the presence of ambiguity often leads to an increase in the subjective project value, and entrepreneurs are more eager to invest. Thereby, our investment model helps to explain differences in investment behavior in situations which are objectively identical
