Gardner-Webb Alumnus A.J. Carey and His Wife Receive National Red Cross Awards
In his last semester at Gardner-Webb University, A.J. Carey took a CPR instructor course, on the recommendation of a professor. Two years later, on Jan. 13, 2019, A.J. would use those skills to save his fatherâs life. A.J.âs wife, Deann, who is a CNA II, helped him perform the lifesaving technique.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/gardner-webb-newscenter-archive/1151/thumbnail.jp

HST Astrometry of M4 and the Galactic Constant V_0/R_0
From multi-epoch WFPC2/HST observations we present astrometric measurements
of stars in the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121) and in the
foreground/background. The presence of an extragalactic point source allows us
to determine the absolute proper motion of the cluster, and, through use of the
field stars in this region only 18 degree from the Galactic center, to measure
the difference between the Oort constants, A-B. We find: (mu_alpha cos dec,
mu_dec)_J2000 = (-13.21 +/- 0.35, -19.28 +/- 0.35) mas/yr, and A-B = V_0/R_0 =
27.6 +/- 1.7 km / s / kpc.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, A.J.__ACCEPTED__, 1 April, 2003, (...!
Fabry Perot Halpha Observations of the Barred Spiral NGC 3367
We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral
galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to
the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis
PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are
observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the
eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three
spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc.
Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all the disk but
mainly from the semi circle formed by the string of south western Halpha
sources. An estimate of the dynamical mass is M(dyn)=2x10^11 Msolar.Comment: Accepted to be published in May 2001 issue in the A.J. 19 pages, 7

Wilderness attribute mapping in the United Kingdom
A wilderness continuum concept can identify the wilder areas of Britain. Geographical Information Systems are used to present information on these areas and solicit public opinion as to which factors are perceived to be important wilderness quality indicators. Consensus maps are compiled from a composite of individual responses and the results compared to Britainâs network of protected areas
