    Managing labour: UK and Australian employers in comparative perspective, 1900-50

    The exceptionalism of Australian industrial relations has long been asserted. In particular, the Australian system of industrial arbitration has been argued to contrast markedly with other countries, such as Britain, which developed a more 'voluntarist' model of industrial regulation. However this distinction relies upon limited historical research of workplace-level developments. In this paper, we focus on a comparative analysis of employer practice in British and Australian workplaces during the first half of the twentieth century. While we find some differences in the nature and extent of management control between the British and Australian experience, what is more striking are the strong similarities in employer practice in work organisation, employment and industrial relations. While economic and institutional factors explain differences in employer practice, fundamental similarities appear to relate to the close economic and social linkages between British and Australian business

    Mechanisms of optical angular momentum transfer to nematic liquid crystalline droplets

    A detailed study is presented that evaluates the relative importance of wave plate behavior, scattering processes and absorption phenomena in transferring optical torque from circularly polarized light to optically trapped nematic droplets. A wide range of parameters is considered: droplet diameters between 1 and 15 µm, birefringence values from 0.15 to 0.26 and trapping beam powers from 50 mW to 400 mW. Wave plate behavior is verified through the dependence of torque on droplet diameter and material birefringence. The dependence of the magnitude of the torque on material birefringence confirms the additional importance of the scattering mechanism. Absorption processes are found to be negligible

    Singular solutions of the diffusion equation of population genetics

    The forward diffusion equation for gene frequency dynamics is solved subject to the condition that the total probability is conserved at all times. This can lead to solutions developing singular spikes (Dirac delta functions) at the gene frequencies 0 and 1. When such spikes appear in solutions they signal gene loss or gene fixation, with the "weight" associated with the spikes corresponding to the probability of loss or fixation. The forward diffusion equation is thus solved for all gene frequencies, namely the absorbing frequencies of 0 and 1 along with the continuous range of gene frequencies on the interval (0; 1) that excludes the frequencies 0 and 1. Previously, the probabilities if the absorbing frequencies 0 and 1 were found by appeal to the backward diffusion equation, while those in the continuous range (0; 1) were found from the forward diffusion equation. Our uni fied approach does not require two separate equations for a complete dynamical treatment of all gene frequencies within a diffusion approximation framework. For cases involving mutation, migration and selection, it is shown that a property of the deterministic part of gene frequency dynamics determines when fixation and loss can occur. It is also shown how solution of the forward equation, at long times, leads to the standard result for the fixation probability

    Cetacean noise criteria revisited in the light of proposed exposure limits for harbour porpoises

    The impact of underwater noise on marine life calls for identification of exposure criteria to inform mitigation. Here we review recent experimental evidence with focus on the high-frequency cetaceans and discuss scientifically-based initial exposure criteria. A range of new TTS experiments suggest that harbour and finless porpoises are more sensitive to sound than expected from extrapolations based on results from bottlenose dolphins. Furthermore, the results from TTS experiments and field studies of behavioural reactions to noise, suggest that response thresholds and TTS critically depend on stimulus frequency. Sound exposure levels for pure tones that induce TTS are reasonably consistent at about 100 dB above the hearing threshold for pure tones and sound pressure thresholds for avoidance reactions are in the range of 40-50 dB above the hearing threshold. We propose that frequency weighting with a filter function approximating the inversed audiogram might be appropriate when assessing impact

    The nature of domestic electricity-loads and effects of time averaging on statistics and on-site generation calculations

    This paper describes exploratory analyses of domestic electricity-profiles recorded at a high time resolution of 1 min on eight houses. It includes a detailed analysis of the effects of time averaging. For dwellings with on-site generation, such as micro-CHP, a better understanding of electricity profiles is important for the economic analysis of systems, and to examine the effects of widespread onsite generation on local electricity-networks. Most load data are available at half-hour intervals; averaging data over periods longer than a minute is shown to under-estimate the proportions of both export and import. The frequency distribution of loads is shown to be highly skewed, with varying distributions and an average load factor of 0.1. Further study is needed to develop more general relationships for a large sample of houses, to apply in design and research

    Negotiating the coaching landscape: Experiences of Black men and women coaches in the United Kingdom

    The current article provides a critical examination of the racialised and gendered processes that reinforce disparities in sport coaching by exploring the experiences of Black men and women coaches in the United Kingdom. The findings are based on in-depth qualitative interviews with coaches from two national governing bodies of sport. Using a Critical Race Theory approach and Black feminist lens, the coaches’ narratives illuminate the complex, multifaceted and dynamic ways in which ‘race’, ethnicity and gender are experienced and negotiated by sport coaches. The coaches’ reflections are discussed under three themes: negotiating identities; privilege and blind spots; and systemic discrimination. The narratives from the coaches’ experiences emphasise the need for key stakeholders in sport to recognise the intersectional, structural and relational experiences that facilitate, as well as constrain, the progression of Black coaches in order to challenge racialised and gendered inequalities

    The polyphonic touch : coarticulation and polyphonic expression in the performance of piano and organ music

    Performances of solo keyboard repertoire can sound more or less polyphonic depending on the performer’s use of divergence in expression. Rather than being a purely cerebral experience, this expressive divergence is situated in an ecological relationship between keyboard and player where the gestural dynamics of technique and musicianship overlap. Specific body schemata relating to expressive divergence are therefore foundational to the interpretive freedom of the performer in creating polyphonic expression, and feature transparently in the musical result. This dissertation theorises expressive divergence by examining the embodiment of single voices through the hierarchical structuring of coarticulation, and by showing how these multi-layered gestures combine in the polyphony of expression. This performative view of polyphony is contextualised not only in musical practice, but also in the wider interdisciplinary use of polyphony as a metaphor. Single-player polyphonic expression is shown to enact or demonstrate an inner experience of the plurality of subjective agency, an experience made possible by its embodied dimension.     Identifying trends in the use of domestic appliances from household electricity consumption measurements

    Results are presented from a monitoring study of the electricity consumption of a sample of UK domestic buildings. Five-minutely average whole house power consumption was recorded for 72 dwellings at five sites over a 2-year monitoring period. The mean annual electricity consumption for the households increased significantly by 4.5% (t = 1.9; p < 0.05, one-tailed) from the first to the second year of monitoring. New techniques are developed which estimate the electricity consumption of different appliance groups, based on analysis of the five-minutely monitored data. The overall increase in electricity consumption is attributed to a 10.2% increase in the consumption of ‘standby’ appliances (such as televisions and consumer electronics) and a 4.7% increase in the consumption of ‘active’ appliance (such as lighting, kettles and electric showers). The consumption of different energy user groups (low, medium and high) is also investigated and low and high users are identified as contributing to the overall increase in consumption. The need for further investigation, such as quantitative and qualitative studies, to improve understanding in domestic electricity consumption is discussed
