    The Formation of Fragments at Corotation in Isothermal Protoplanetary Disks

    Numerical hydrodynamics simulations have established that disks which are evolved under the condition of local isothermality will fragment into small dense clumps due to gravitational instabilities when the Toomre stability parameter QQ is sufficiently low. Because fragmentation through disk instability has been suggested as a gas giant planet formation mechanism, it is important to understand the physics underlying this process as thoroughly as possible. In this paper, we offer analytic arguments for why, at low QQ, fragments are most likely to form first at the corotation radii of growing spiral modes, and we support these arguments with results from 3D hydrodynamics simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figur

    The political economy of governance in a ‘global value chain world’

    The global political economy has come to be shaped by a historically novel form of industrial organisation, the global value chain (GVC). Yet, although there has been much attention both to GVCs and to global governance, there has been a great deal less that connects the two. This symposium aims to take a step towards redressing this situation in order to move towards a better understanding of the political economy of governance in a ‘GVC world’. This introductory essay outlines the aims of the Symposium as being (a) to advance a more encompassing vision of politics and agency in a GVC world, (b) to understand the implications of a GVC world for global economic governance and (c) to move beyond empirical description and conceptual characterisation of forms of governance towards more explicit normative considerations of their implications for more equitable and sustainable outcomes

Trust and control are interlinked processes commonly seen as key to reach effectiveness in inter- and intraorganizational relations. The relation between trust and control is, however, a complex one, and research into this relation has given rise to various and contradictory interpretations of how trust and control relate. A well-known discussion is directed at whether trust and control are better conceived as substitutes, or as complementary mechanisms of governance. The articles in this special issue bring the discussion on the relationship between both concepts a step further by identifying common factors, distinctive mechanisms, and key implications relevant for theory building and empirical research. By studying trust and control through different perspectives and at different levels of analysis, the articles provide new theoretical insights and empirical evidence on the foundations of the trust-control interrelations

    Pre-operative stenting is associated with a higher prevalence of post-operative complications following pancreatoduodenectomy

    AbstractObjectivesWhilst there are theoretical benefits from pre-operatively draining the biliary tree prior to pancreatoduodenectomy (PD), the current literature does not support this intervention. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between pre-operative stenting, bactibilia and outcome in a large United Kingdom tertiary referral practice.MethodsPatients undergoing PD were identified from a prospectively maintained database. The presence or absence of a stent prior to PD, and the results of bile cultures taken at PD were related to the subsequent post-operative course and the development of complications.Results280 patients underwent PD for periampullary malignancies, all of whom presented with jaundice. 118 patients were stented prior to referral (98 ERCP, 20 PTC). Bile cultures were positive more frequently in the stent group (83% vs. 55%; p = 0.000002) and bactibilia was more common after ERCP than PTC (83% vs. 56%; p = 0.006). The overall prevalence of complications was 54% in the stented and 41% in the non-stented group (p = 0.03) with statistical significance achieved for pancreatic leak (p = 0.013) and haemorrhagic complications (p = 0.03). Comparing stent with no stent, there as no difference in the 30-day mortalities (8.5% vs. 6.8%; p = 0.6) or the 1-year mortality rates (35% vs. 28%; p = 0.21). Mortality rates in the infection versus no infection groups were comparable at 30 days (8.5% vs. 5.5%; p = 0.21), and at 1 year (30.7% vs. 26.4%; p = 0.25).ConclusionsPre-operative stent insertion prior to PD is associated with increased morbidity but not mortality and this is greatest for stents placed at ERCP

    The η\eta-3N problem with separable interactions

    The η\eta-3N-interaction is studied within the four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky theory adopting purely separable forms for the two- and three-body subamplitudes, limiting the basic two-body interactions to s-waves only. The corresponding separable approximation for the integral kernels is obtained by using the Hilbert-Schmidt procedure. Results are presented for the η\eta-3^3H scattering amplitude and for the total elastic cross section for energies below the triton break-up threshold.Comment: revised version accepted for Phys. Rev.     Against all odds? Forming the planet of the HD196885 binary

    HD196885Ab is the most "extreme" planet-in-a-binary discovered to date, whose orbit places it at the limit for orbital stability. The presence of a planet in such a highly perturbed region poses a clear challenge to planet-formation scenarios. We investigate this issue by focusing on the planet-formation stage that is arguably the most sensitive to binary perturbations: the mutual accretion of kilometre-sized planetesimals. To this effect we numerically estimate the impact velocities dvdv amongst a population of circumprimary planetesimals. We find that most of the circumprimary disc is strongly hostile to planetesimal accretion, especially the region around 2.6AU (the planet's location) where binary perturbations induce planetesimal-shattering dvdv of more than 1km/s. Possible solutions to the paradox of having a planet in such accretion-hostile regions are 1) that initial planetesimals were very big, at least 250km, 2) that the binary had an initial orbit at least twice the present one, and was later compacted due to early stellar encounters, 3) that planetesimals did not grow by mutual impacts but by sweeping of dust (the "snowball" growth mode identified by Xie et al., 2010b), or 4) that HD196885Ab was formed not by core-accretion but by the concurent disc instability mechanism.     Dark Matter Direct Detection Signals inferred from a Cosmological N-body Simulation with Baryons

    We extract at redshift z=0 a Milky Way sized object including gas, stars and dark matter (DM) from a recent, high-resolution cosmological N-body simulation with baryons. Its resolution is sufficient to witness the formation of a rotating disk and bulge at the center of the halo potential. The phase-space structure of the central galactic halo reveals the presence of a dark disk component, that is co-rotating with the stellar disk. At the Earth's location, it contributes to around 25% of the total DM local density, whose value is rho_DM ~ 0.37 GeV/cm^3. The velocity distributions also show strong deviations from pure Gaussian and Maxwellian distributions, with a sharper drop of the high velocity tail. We give a detailed study of the impact of these features on the predictions for DM signals in direct detection experiments. In particular, the question of whether the modulation signal observed by DAMA is or is not excluded by limits set by other experiments (CDMS, XENON and CRESST...) is re-analyzed and compared to the case of a standard Maxwellian halo, in both the elastic and the inelastic scattering scenarios. We find that the compatibility between DAMA and the other experiments is improved. In the elastic scenario, the DAMA modulation signal is slightly enhanced in the so-called channeling region, as a result of several effects. For the inelastic scenario, the improvement of the fit is mainly attributable to the departure from a Maxwellian distribution at high velocity.Comment: 39 page

    Bevacizumab in temozolomide refractory high-grade gliomas: single-centre experience and review of the literature

    BACKGROUND: Despite multidisciplinary treatment approaches, the prognosis for patients with high-grade glioma (HGG) is poor, with a median overall survival (OS) of 14.6 months for glioblastoma multiforme (GB). As high levels of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF) are found in HGG, targeted anti-antiangiogenic therapy using the humanized monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (BEV) was studied in a series of clinical trials. Still, the discrepancy of BEV's efficacy with regard to initial clinical and radiological response and its reported failure to prolong survival remains to be explained. Here, we illustrate the effectiveness of BEV in recurrent HGG by summarizing our single-centre experience. METHODS: We have retrospectively investigated the effect of BEV in temozolomide refractory HGG in 39 patients treated at the University Hospital of Ulm, Germany. RESULTS: Median duration of BEV treatment was 12.5 weeks; 23% of patients received BEV for more than 6 months and 15% for more than 1 year, until clinical or radiological tumour progression led to discontinuation. Furthermore, Karnofsky performance status increased in 30.6% and steroid dose decreased in 39% of all patients. CONCLUSIONS: The review of literature reveals that phase II and III studies support BEV as an effective therapy in recurrent HGG, at least with regard to progression-free survival (PFS), but landmark phase III trials failed to prove benefit concerning OS. Here, we discuss reasons that may account for this observation. We conclude that prolonging PFS with maintenance of neurological function and personal and economic independency justifies the off-label use of BEV
