Large amounts of optically-obscured star formation in the host galaxies of some type-2 quasars
We present Hubble Space Telescope images, and spectral energy distributions
from optical to infrared wavelengths for a sample of six 0.3<z<0.8 type-2
quasars selected in the mid-infrared using data from the Spitzer Space
Telescope. All the host galaxies show some signs of disturbance. Most seem to
possess dusty, star-forming disks. The disk inclination, estimated from the
axial ratio of the hosts, correlates with the depth of the silicate feature in
the mid-infrared spectra, implying that at least some of the reddening towards
the AGN arises in the host galaxy. The star formation rates in these objects,
as inferred from the strengths of the PAH features and far-infrared continuum,
range from 3-90 Msun/yr, but are mostly much larger than those inferred from
the [OII]3727 emission line luminosity, due to obscuration. Taken together with
studies of type-2 quasar hosts from samples selected in the optical and X-ray,
this is consistent with previous suggestions that two types of extinction
processes operate within the type-2 quasar population, namely a component due
to the dusty torus in the immediate environment of the AGN, and a more extended

A sample of low energy bursts from FRB 121102
We present 41 bursts from the first repeating fast radio burst discovered
(FRB 121102). A deep search has allowed us to probe unprecedentedly low burst
energies during two consecutive observations (separated by one day) using the
Arecibo telescope at 1.4 GHz. The bursts are generally detected in less than a
third of the 580-MHz observing bandwidth, demonstrating that narrow-band FRB
signals may be more common than previously thought. We show that the bursts are
likely faint versions of previously reported multi-component bursts. There is a
striking lack of bursts detected below 1.35 GHz and simultaneous VLA
observations at 3 GHz did not detect any of the 41 bursts, but did detect one
that was not seen with Arecibo, suggesting preferred radio emission frequencies
that vary with epoch. A power law approximation of the cumulative distribution
of burst energies yields an index that is much steeper than the
previously reported value of . The discrepancy may be evidence for a
more complex energy distribution. We place constraints on the possibility that
the associated persistent radio source is generated by the emission of many
faint bursts ( ms). We do not see a connection between burst
fluence and wait time. The distribution of wait times follows a log-normal
distribution centered around s; however, some bursts have wait times
below 1 s and as short as 26 ms, which is consistent with previous reports of a
bimodal distribution. We caution against exclusively integrating over the full

On the production of ancient Egyptian blue: Multi-modal characterization and micronscale luminescence mapping
The ancient pigment Egyptian blue has long been studied for its historical significance; however, recent work has shown that its unique visible induced luminescent property can be used both to identify the pigment and to inspire new materials with this characteristic. In this study, a multi-modal characterization approach is used to explore variations in ancient production of Egyptian blue from shabti statuettes found in the village of Deir el-Medina in Egypt (Luxor, West Bank) dating back to the New Kingdom (18th-20th Dynasties; about 1550-1077 BCE). Using quantitative SEM-EDS analysis, we identify two possible production groups of the Egyptian blue and demonstrate the presence of multiple phases within samples using cluster analysis and ternary diagram representations. Using both macro-scale non-invasive (X-rays fluorescence and multi-spectral imaging) and micro-sampling (SEM-EDS and Raman confocal microspectroscopy) techniques, we correlate photoluminescence and chemical composition of the ancient samples. We introduce Raman spectroscopic imaging as a means to capture simultaneously visible-induced luminesce and crystal structure and utilize it to identify two classes of luminescing and non-luminescing silicate phases in the pigment that may be connected to production technologies. The results presented here provide a new framework through which Egyptian blue can be studied and inform the design of new materials based on its luminescent property
On Directed Feedback Vertex Set parameterized by treewidth
We study the Directed Feedback Vertex Set problem parameterized by the
treewidth of the input graph. We prove that unless the Exponential Time
Hypothesis fails, the problem cannot be solved in time on general directed graphs, where is the treewidth of
the underlying undirected graph. This is matched by a dynamic programming
algorithm with running time .
On the other hand, we show that if the input digraph is planar, then the

Type 1 and type 2 quasars in the mid-infrared
Type 2 or "obscured" AGN have long been identified at low AGN luminosities (e.g. Seyfert 2s) or through their radio luminosities (e.g. radio galaxies). But radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) are many times more common than radio-loud quasars, and it's therefore unsurprising that recent searches have revealed that radio-quiet quasar 2s also form significant population. Finding the numbers, properties, and redshift distribution of quasar 2s will be very important to resolving questions about the formation and co-evolution of black holes and galaxies. We have selected a sample of Type 2 and Type 1 quasars matched in their mid-infrared luminosity from the Spitzer First Look Survey by selecting on their mid-infrared dust emission properties (as measured by Spitzer IRAC photometry). This emission provides a distinctive signature of AGN activity but should not be affected by orientation or torus opening angle. We have obtained mid-infrared IRS spectroscopy of these samples to study star formation activity in the host galaxies and the dust environments of the AGN, using measurements of the PAH features, the shape of the mid-infrared SED, and the equivalent width of the silicate features at 10 microns. We find that the quasar 2s have more diverse mid-IR spectral properties, and that obscuration of the AGN is linked to star formation activity in the host
Reagent free electrochemical-based detection of silver ions at interdigitated microelectrodes using in-situ pH control
Herein we report on the development of an electrochemical sensor for silver ions detection in tap water using anodic sweep voltammetry with in-situ pH control; enabled by closely spaced interdigitated electrode arrays. The in-situ pH control approach allowed the pH of a test solution to be tailored to pH 3 (experimentally determined as the optimal pH) by applying 1.65 V to a protonator electrode with the subsequent production of protons, arising from water electrolysis, dropping the local pH value. Using this approach, an initial proof-of-concept study for silver detection in sodium acetate was undertaken where 1.25 V was applied during deposition (to compensate for oxygen production) and 1.65 V during stripping. Using these conditions, calibration between 0.2 and 10 μM was established with the silver stripping peak ∼0.3 V. The calculated limit of detection was 13 nM. For the final application in tap water, 1.65 V was applied to a protonator electrode for both deposition and stripping of silver. The chloride ions, present in tap water (as a consequence of adding chlorine during the disinfection process) facilitated silver detection and caused the striping peak to shift catholically to ∼0.2 V. The combination of the complexation of silver ions with chloride and in-situ pH control resulted in a linear calibration range between 0.25 and 2 μM in tap water and a calculated limit of detection of 106 nM without the need to add acid or supporting electrolytes
Ethical issues in the use of in-depth interviews: literature review and discussion
This paper reports a literature review on the topic of ethical issues in in-depth interviews. The review returned three
types of article: general discussion, issues in particular studies, and studies of interview-based research ethics. Whilst
many of the issues discussed in these articles are generic to research ethics, such as confidentiality, they often had particular
manifestations in this type of research. For example, privacy was a significant problem as interviews sometimes
probe unexpected areas. For similar reasons, it is difficult to give full information of the nature of a particular interview
at the outset, hence informed consent is problematic. Where a pair is interviewed (such as carer and cared-for) there are
major difficulties in maintaining confidentiality and protecting privacy. The potential for interviews to harm participants
emotionally is noted in some papers, although this is often set against potential therapeutic benefit. As well as
these generic issues, there are some ethical issues fairly specific to in-depth interviews. The problem of dual role is noted
in many papers. It can take many forms: an interviewer might be nurse and researcher, scientist and counsellor, or
reporter and evangelist. There are other specific issues such as taking sides in an interview, and protecting vulnerable
groups. Little specific study of the ethics of in-depth interviews has taken place. However, that which has shows some
important findings. For example, one study shows participants are not averse to discussing painful issues provided they
feel the study is worthwhile. Some papers make recommendations for researchers. One such is that they should consider
using a model of continuous (or process) consent rather than viewing consent as occurring once, at signature, prior
to the interview. However, there is a need for further study of this area, both philosophical and empirical
The SKA Mid-frequency All-sky continuum survey: Discovering the unexpected and transforming radio-astronomy
SKA is an instrument, not an experiment (Phil Diamond, Stellenbosch, 17 Feb 2014) We show that, in addition to specific science goals, there is a strong case for conducting an all-sky (i.e. the visible 3p steradians) SKA continuum survey which does not fit neatly into conventional science cases. History shows that the greatest scientific impact of most major telescopes (e.g., HST, VLA) lies beyond the original goals used to justify the telescope. The design of the telescope therefore needs to maximise the ultimate scientific productivity, in addition to achieving the specific science goals. In this chapter, we show that an all-sky continuum survey is likely to achieve transformational science in two specific respects
