The starting transient of solid propellant rocket motors with high internal gas velocities
A comprehensive analytical model which considers time and space development of the flow field in solid propellant rocket motors with high volumetric loading density is described. The gas dynamics in the motor chamber is governed by a set of hyperbolic partial differential equations, that are coupled with the ignition and flame spreading events, and with the axial variation of mass addition. The flame spreading rate is calculated by successive heating-to-ignition along the propellant surface. Experimental diagnostic studies have been performed with a rectangular window motor (50 cm grain length, 5 cm burning perimeter and 1 cm hydraulic port diameter), using a controllable head-end gaseous igniter. Tests were conducted with AP composite propellant at port-to-throat area ratios of 2.0, 1.5, 1.2, and 1.06, and head-end pressures from 35 to 70 atm. Calculated pressure transients and flame spreading rates are in very good agreement with those measured in the experimental system
Quark Mass Matrices with Four and Five Texture Zeroes, and the CKM Matrix, in terms of Mass Eigenvalues
Using the triangular matrix techniques of Kuo et al and Chiu et al for the
four and five texture zero cases, with vanishing (11) elements for U and D
matrices, it is shown, from the general eigenvalue equations and hierarchy
conditions, that the quark mass matrices, and the CKM matrix can be expressed
(except for the phases) entirely in terms of quark masses. The matrix
structures are then quite simple and transparent. We confirm their results for
the five texture zero case but find, upon closer examination of all the CKM
elements which our results provide, that six of their nine patterns for the
four texture zero case are not compatible with experiments. In total, only one
five-texture zero and three four-texture zero patterns are allowed.Comment: 15 pages, 3 table
Hermitian quark mass matrices with four texture zeros
We provide a complete and systematic analysis of hermitian, hierarchical
quark mass matrices with four texture zeros. Using triangular mass matrices,
each pattern of texture zeros is readily shown to lead to a definite relation
between the CKM parameters and the quark masses. Nineteen pairs are found to be
consistent with present data, and one other is marginally acceptable. In
particular, no parallel structure between the up and down mass matrices is
found to be favorable with data.Comment: 18 pages, no figure, references [8] and [10] adde
Low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction and shell-model calculations
We discuss the use of the low-momentum nucleon-nucleon NN interaction V-low-k
in the derivation of the shell-model effective interaction and emphasize its
practical value as an alternative to the Brueckner G-matrix method. We present
some selected results of our current study of exotic nuclei around closed
shells, which have been obtained starting from the CD-Bonn potential. We also
show some results of calculations performed with different phase-shift
equivalent NN potentials, and discuss the effect of changes in the cutoff
momentum which defines the V-low-k potential.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Talk presented at CDN05, 31 Jan - 4 Feb

Lorentz transformation and vector field flows
The parameter changes resulting from a combination of Lorentz transformation
are shown to form vector field flows. The exact, finite Thomas rotation angle
is determined and interpreted intuitively. Using phase portraits, the
parameters evolution can be clearly visualized. In addition to identifying the
fixed points, we obtain an analytic invariant, which correlates the evolution
of parameters.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Section IV revised and title change
Mass Hierarchies and the Seesaw Neutrino Mixing
We give a general analysis of neutrino mixing in the seesaw mechanism with
three flavors. Assuming that the Dirac and u-quark mass matrices are similar,
we establish simple relations between the neutrino parameters and individual
Majorana masses. They are shown to depend rather strongly on the physical
neutrino mixing angles. We calculate explicitly the implied Majorana mass
hierarchies for parameter sets corresponding to different solutions to the
solar neutrino problem.Comment: 11 pages, no figures, replaced with final version. Minor corrections

Low momentum nucleon-nucleon potential and shell model effective interactions
A low momentum nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential V-low-k is derived from meson
exhange potentials by integrating out the model dependent high momentum modes
of V_NN. The smooth and approximately unique V-low-k is used as input for shell
model calculations instead of the usual Brueckner G matrix. Such an approach
eliminates the nuclear mass dependence of the input interaction one finds in
the G matrix approach, allowing the same input interaction to be used in
different nuclear regions. Shell model calculations of 18O, 134Te and 135I
using the same input V-low-k have been performed. For cut-off momentum Lambda
in the vicinity of 2 fm-1, our calculated low-lying spectra for these nuclei
are in good agreement with experiments, and are weakly dependent on Lambda.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
The Megamaser Cosmology Project. V. An Angular Diameter Distance to NGC 6264 at 140 Mpc
We present the direct measurement of the Hubble constant, yielding the direct
measurement of the angular-diameter distance to NGC 6264 using the HO
megamaser technique. Our measurement is based on sensitive observations of the
circumnuclear megamaser disk from four observations with the Very Long Baseline
Array, the Green Bank Telescope and the Effelsberg Telescope. We also monitored
the maser spectral profile for 2.3 years using the Green Bank Telescope to
measure accelerations of maser lines by tracking their line-of-sight velocities
as they change with time. The measured accelerations suggest that the systemic
maser spots have a significantly wider radial distribution than in the
archetypal megamaser in NGC 4258. We model the maser emission as arising from a
circumnuclear disk with orbits dominated by the central black hole. The best
fit of the data gives a Hubble constant of 689 km s
Mpc, which corresponds to an angular-diameter distance of 14419
Mpc. In addition, the fit also gives a mass of the central black hole of
(3.090.42) . The result demonstrates the
feasibility of measuring distances to galaxies located well into the Hubble
flow by using circumnuclear megamaser disks.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by Ap
