Controlled phase gate for solid-state charge qubits
We describe a mechanism for realizing a controlled phase gate for solid-state
charge qubits. By augmenting the positionally defined qubit with an auxiliary
state, and changing the charge distribution in the three-dot system, we are
able to effectively switch the Coulombic interaction, effecting an entangling
gate. We consider two architectures, and numerically investigate their

Direct estimation of functionals of density operators by local operations and classical communication
We present a method of direct estimation of important properties of a shared bipartite quantum state, within the "distant laboratories" paradigm, using only local operations and classical communication. We apply this procedure to spectrum estimation of shared states, and locally implementable structural physical approximations to incompletely positive maps. This procedure can also be applied to the estimation of channel capacity and measures of entanglement
Interference of Quantum Channels
We show how interferometry can be used to characterise certain aspects of
general quantum processes, in particular, the coherence of completely positive
maps. We derive a measure of coherent fidelity, maximum interference visibility
and the closest unitary operator to a given physical process under this

Cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Calculation for Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates
A rotating bosonic many-body system in a harmonic trap is studied with the
3D-Cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method at zero temperature, which has been
applied to nuclear many-body systems at high spin. This method is a variational
method extended from the Hartree-Fock theory, which can treat the pairing
correlations in a self-consistent manner. An advantage of this method is that a
finite-range interaction between constituent particles can be used in the
calculation, unlike the original Gross-Pitaevskii approach. To demonstrate the
validity of our method, we present a calculation for a toy model, that is, a
rotating system of ten bosonic particles interacting through the repulsive
quadrupole-quadrupole interaction in a harmonic trap. It is found that the
yrast states, the lowest-energy states for the given total angular momentum,
does not correspond to the Bose-Einstein condensate, except a few special
cases. One of such cases is a vortex state, which appears when the total
angular momentum is twice the particle number (i.e., ).Comment: accepted to Phys. Rev.

REVIEW: Lupus nephritis: An approach to diagnosis and treatment in South Africa
Lupus nephritis (LN) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Delayed recognition and diagnosis of LN may be a common cause of chronic kidney disease among South Africans. Renal biopsy is the gold standard of diagnosing LN; however, this service is not available in many centres and the use of urinalysis, urine microscopic examination and other serological tests can be useful in identifying patients with proliferative LN. Proliferative types of LN (class III, class IV and mixed class V) comprise the larger proportion of patients with this condition. Patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy need to be monitored closely for side-effects and drug-related toxicities. LN patients with end-stage renal disease (class VI) need to be prepared for renal replacement therapy (dialysis and renal transplantation). In all patients, treatment should include adjunctive therapies such as renin angiotensin aldosterone system blockade, bone protection (with calcium supplements and vitamin D), blood pressure control and chloroquine – all of which help to retard the progression of kidney disease
