    Toughening Mechanism of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer Laminates Containing Inkjet Printed Poly(methyl methacrylate) Microphases

    It has previously been demonstrated that inkjet-printed thermoplastic microphases are capable of producing a significant increase in mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc) in carbon fibre-reinforced polymer with no significant reduction in other mechanical properties or increase in parasitic weight. In this work, the evolution of the microphase structure during processing and how this is influenced by the chosen printing parameters were investigated. Samples were prepared that enabled monitoring of the microphases during all steps of fabrication, with the thermoplastic polymer found to form a discrete spherical shape due to surface energy minimisation. Based upon the morphology and properties of the thermoplastic microphases, it was hypothesised that the increased toughness was due to a combination of crack deflection and plastic deformation of the microphases. Samples were produced for the double cantilever beam fracture toughness testing using the same printing conditions, and both GIc values and scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surface supported the proposed hypothesis. He rose to film stardom in the 1980s when Hong Kong cinema started to attract global attention beyond East Asia.     Fabrication of patterned thermoplastic microphases between composite plies by inkjet printing

    We report on the pioneering application of inkjet printing in depositing patterned thermoplastic microphases between composite plies and the beneficial effect of the printed thermoplastic on the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer laminates. Double-cantilever beam test and short-beam shear test were employed to investigate the mechanical performances of the engineered composites. The results from this work revealed that by printing thermoplastic poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(methyl methacrylate) between the carbon fibre-reinforced polymer plies, mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc) is noticeably enhanced, whilst the shear strength has also been preserved. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the fracture surfaces generated during the double-cantilever beam test. The microscopic addition of the thermoplastic polymers (approximately 0.015 wt%) did not increase the weight of the composites significantly, which compares favourably to other conventional toughening methods

    Runaway Events Dominate the Heavy Tail of Citation Distributions

    Statistical distributions with heavy tails are ubiquitous in natural and social phenomena. Since the entries in heavy tail have disproportional significance, the knowledge of its exact shape is very important. Citations of scientific papers form one of the best-known heavy tail distributions. Even in this case there is a considerable debate whether citation distribution follows the log-normal or power-law fit. The goal of our study is to solve this debate by measuring citation distribution for a very large and homogeneous data. We measured citation distribution for 418,438 Physics papers published in 1980-1989 and cited by 2008. While the log-normal fit deviates too strong from the data, the discrete power-law function with the exponent Ī³=3.15\gamma=3.15 does better and fits 99.955% of the data. However, the extreme tail of the distribution deviates upward even from the power-law fit and exhibits a dramatic "runaway" behavior. The onset of the runaway regime is revealed macroscopically as the paper garners 1000-1500 citations, however the microscopic measurements of autocorrelation in citation rates are able to predict this behavior in advance.Comment: 6 pages, 5 Figure

    Metabolic Signatures of Lung Cancer in Biofluids: NMR-Based Metabonomics of Blood Plasma

    In this work, the variations in the metabolic profile of blood plasma from lung cancer patients and healthy controls were investigated through NMR-based metabonomics, to assess the potential of this approach for lung cancer screening and diagnosis. PLS-DA modeling of CPMG spectra from plasma, subjected to Monte Carlo Cross Validation, allowed cancer patients to be discriminated from controls with sensitivity and specificity levels of about 90%. Relatively lower HDL and higher VLDL + LDL in the patients' plasma, together with increased lactate and pyruvate and decreased levels of glucose, citrate, formate, acetate, several amino acids (alanine, glutamine, histidine, tyrosine, valine), and methanol, could be detected. These changes were found to be present at initial disease stages and could be related to known cancer biochemical hallmarks, such as enhanced glycolysis, glutaminolysis, and gluconeogenesis, together with suppressed Krebs cycle and reduced lipid catabolism, thus supporting the hypothesis of a systemic metabolic signature for lung cancer.     Interpreting ambiguous ā€˜traceā€™ results in Schistosoma mansoni CCA Tests: Estimating sensitivity and specificity of ambiguous results with no gold standard

    Background The development of new diagnostics is an important tool in the fight against disease. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is used to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of tests in the absence of a gold standard. The main field diagnostic for Schistosoma mansoni infection, Kato-Katz (KK), is not very sensitive at low infection intensities. A point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) test has been shown to be more sensitive than KK. However, CCA can return an ambiguous ā€˜traceā€™ result between ā€˜positiveā€™ and ā€˜negativeā€™, and much debate has focused on interpretation of traces results. Methodology/Principle findings We show how LCA can be extended to include ambiguous trace results and analyse S. mansoni studies from both CĆ“te dā€™Ivoire (CdI) and Uganda. We compare the diagnostic performance of KK and CCA and the observed results by each test to the estimated infection prevalence in the population. Prevalence by KK was higher in CdI (13.4%) than in Uganda (6.1%), but prevalence by CCA was similar between countries, both when trace was assumed to be negative (CCAtn: 11.7% in CdI and 9.7% in Uganda) and positive (CCAtp: 20.1% in CdI and 22.5% in Uganda). The estimated sensitivity of CCA was more consistent between countries than the estimated sensitivity of KK, and estimated infection prevalence did not significantly differ between CdI (20.5%) and Uganda (19.1%). The prevalence by CCA with trace as positive did not differ significantly from estimates of infection prevalence in either country, whereas both KK and CCA with trace as negative significantly underestimated infection prevalence in both countries. Conclusions Incorporation of ambiguous results into an LCA enables the effect of different treatment thresholds to be directly assessed and is applicable in many fields.     Regulation of neutrophil senescence by microRNAs

    Neutrophils are rapidly recruited to sites of tissue injury or infection, where they protect against invading pathogens. Neutrophil functions are limited by a process of neutrophil senescence, which renders the cells unable to respond to chemoattractants, carry out respiratory burst, or degranulate. In parallel, aged neutrophils also undergo spontaneous apoptosis, which can be delayed by factors such as GMCSF. This is then followed by their subsequent removal by phagocytic cells such as macrophages, thereby preventing unwanted inflammation and tissue damage. Neutrophils translate mRNA to make new proteins that are important in maintaining functional longevity. We therefore hypothesised that neutrophil functions and lifespan might be regulated by microRNAs expressed within human neutrophils. Total RNA from highly purified neutrophils was prepared and subjected to microarray analysis using the Agilent human miRNA microarray V3. We found human neutrophils expressed a selected repertoire of 148 microRNAs and that 6 of these were significantly upregulated after a period of 4 hours in culture, at a time when the contribution of apoptosis is negligible. A list of predicted targets for these 6 microRNAs was generated from http://mirecords.biolead.org and compared to mRNA species downregulated over time, revealing 83 genes targeted by at least 2 out of the 6 regulated microRNAs. Pathway analysis of genes containing binding sites for these microRNAs identified the following pathways: chemokine and cytokine signalling, Ras pathway, and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. Our data suggest that microRNAs may play a role in the regulation of neutrophil senescence and further suggest that manipulation of microRNAs might represent an area of future therapeutic interest for the treatment of inflammatory disease

    Perovskite solar cells: a deep analysis using currentā€“voltage and capacitanceā€“voltage techniques

    Perovskite solar cells exhibiting~14ā€“15% efficiency were experimentally measured using currentā€“voltage (Iā€“V) and capacitanceā€“voltage (Cā€“V) techniques in order to extract material and device properties, and understand the action of photovoltaic (PV) operation. Deep analyses were carried out on dark- and illuminated Iā€“V curves, and dark Cā€“V curves. Results were compared with those of graded bandgap solar cells fabricated on inorganic n-type window layers. These analyses according to a physicistā€™s point of view lead to understand the perovskite solar cell as a graded bandgap solar cell built on a p-type window layer. Iā€“V and Cā€“V results show very similar behaviour and the principle of PV action is identical. Once the stability issues with perovskites are solved, these devices have very high potential of producing next generation solar cells reaching at least mid-20% efficiency values
