    First-order phase transitions in lattice bilayers of Janus-like particles: Monte Carlo simulations

    The first-order phase transitions in the lattice model of Janus-like particles confined in slit-like pores are studied. We assume a cubic lattice with molecules that can freely change their orientation on a lattice site. Moreover, the molecules can interact with the pore walls with orientation-dependent forces. The performed calculations are limited to the cases of bilayers. Our emphasis is on the competition between the fluid-wall and fluid-fluid interactions. The oriented structures formed in the systems in which the fluid-wall interactions acting contrary to the fluid-fluid interactions differ from those appearing in the systems with neutral walls or with walls attracting the repulsive parts of fluid molecules.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

    Inflation in Multidimensional Quantum Cosmology

    We extend to multidimensional cosmology Vilenkin's prescription of tunnelling from nothing for the quantum origin of the observable Universe. Our model consists of a D+4D+4-dimensional spacetime of topology R×S3×SD{\cal R}\times {\cal S}^3 \times{\cal S}^D, with a scalar field (``chaotic inflaton'') for the matter component. Einstein gravity and Casimir compactification are assumed. The resulting minisuperspace is 3--dimensional. Patchwise we find an approximate analytic solution of the Wheeler--DeWitt equation through which we discuss the tunnelling picture and the probability of nucleation of the classical Universe with compactifying extra dimensions. Our conclusion is that the most likely initial conditions, although they do not lead to the compactification of the internal space, still yield (power-law) inflation for the outer space. The scenario is physically acceptable because the inner space growth is limited to 1011\sim 10^{11} in 100 e-foldings of inflation, starting from the Planck scale.Comment: RevTeX, 30 pages, 4 figures available via fax on request to [email protected], submitted to Phys.     Absolute properties of BG Ind - a bright F3 system just leaving the Main Sequence

    We present photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the bright detached eclipsing binary BG Ind. The masses of the components are found to be 1.428 +- 0.008 and 1.293 +- 0.008 Msun and the radii to be 2.290+-0.017 and 1.680+-0.038 Rsun for primary and secondary stars, respectively. Spectra- and isochrone-fitting coupled with color indices calibration yield [Fe/H]=-0.2+-0.1. At an age of 2.65+-0.20 Gyr BG Ind is well advanced in the main-sequence evolutionary phase - in fact, its primary is at TAMS or just beyond it. Together with three similar systems (BK Peg, BW Aqr and GX Gem) it offers an interesting opportunity to test the theoretical description of overshooting in the critical mass range 1.2-1.5 Msun.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, corrected bugs in author lis

    Wetting transitions of Ne

    We report studies of the wetting behavior of Ne on very weakly attractive surfaces, carried out with the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo method. The Ne-Ne interaction was taken to be of Lennard-Jones form, while the Ne-surface interaction was derived from an ab initio calculation of Chizmeshya et al. Nonwetting behavior was found for Li, Rb, and Cs in the temperature regime explored (i.e., T < 42 K). Drying behavior was manifested in a depleted fluid density near the Cs surface. In contrast, for the case of Mg (a more attractive potential) a prewetting transition was found near T= 28 K. This temperature was found to shift slightly when a corrugated potential was used instead of a uniform potential. The isotherm shape and the density profiles did not differ qualitatively between these cases.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Total Cross Section of the Reaction pp \to pK^+\Lambda Close to Threshold

    The energy dependence of the total cross section for the pp \to pK^+\Lambda reaction was measured in the threshold region covering the excess energy range up to 7MeV. Existing model calculations describe the slope of the measured cross sections well, but are too low by a factor of two to three in rate. The data were used for a precise determination of the beam momentum of the COSY-synchrotron.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    On Physical Equivalence between Nonlinear Gravity Theories

    We argue that in a nonlinear gravity theory, which according to well-known results is dynamically equivalent to a self-gravitating scalar field in General Relativity, the true physical variables are exactly those which describe the equivalent general-relativistic model (these variables are known as Einstein frame). Whenever such variables cannot be defined, there are strong indications that the original theory is unphysical. We explicitly show how to map, in the presence of matter, the Jordan frame to the Einstein one and backwards. We study energetics for asymptotically flat solutions. This is based on the second-order dynamics obtained, without changing the metric, by the use of a Helmholtz Lagrangian. We prove for a large class of these Lagrangians that the ADM energy is positive for solutions close to flat space. The proof of this Positive Energy Theorem relies on the existence of the Einstein frame, since in the (Helmholtz--)Jordan frame the Dominant Energy Condition does not hold and the field variables are unrelated to the total energy of the system.Comment: 37 pp., TO-JLL-P 3/93 Dec 199

    η\eta^{\prime} production in proton-proton scattering close to threshold}

    The ppppηpp \to pp \eta^{\prime} (958) reaction has been measured at COSY using the internal beam and the COSY-11 facility. The total cross sections at the four different excess energies \mbox{Q= 1.5 MeV, 1.7 MeV, 2.9 MeV, Q = ~1.5 ~MeV, ~1.7 ~MeV, ~2.9 ~MeV, and  4.1MeV ~4.1 MeV} have been evaluated to be \mbox{σ=2.5±0.5 nb \sigma = 2.5 \pm 0.5~nb,    2.9±1.1 nb~~~ 2.9 \pm 1.1~nb,    12.7±3.2 nb~~~ 12.7 \pm 3.2~nb, ~ and    25.2±3.6 nb~~~ 25.2 \pm 3.6 ~nb }, respectively. In this region of excess energy the η\eta^{\prime} (958) cross sections are much lower compared to those of the π0\pi ^0 and η\eta production.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    First searches for optical counterparts to gravitational-wave candidate events

    During the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory and Virgo joint science runs in 2009-2010, gravitational wave (GW) data from three interferometer detectors were analyzed within minutes to select GW candidate events and infer their apparent sky positions. Target coordinates were transmitted to several telescopes for follow-up observations aimed at the detection of an associated optical transient. Images were obtained for eight such GW candidates. We present the methods used to analyze the image data as well as the transient search results. No optical transient was identified with a convincing association with any of these candidates, and none of the GW triggers showed strong evidence for being astrophysical in nature. We compare the sensitivities of these observations to several model light curves from possible sources of interest, and discuss prospects for future joint GW-optical observations of this type
