    The potential of integrating E-participation in planning support systems

    The increasing complexity of spatial planning issues and pressure from citizens to takepart in designing and deciding on spatial plans result in a need for improved methods to aidcommunication between governmental actors and citizens. These developments put high demands onparticipatory Planning Support Systems (PSS); instruments that can aid planners in doing theirplanning tasks. By using the accessibility of the internet, e-participation offers opportunities as a PSS.Although many advantages are attributed to participatory PSS, its use in the planning practice remainsmarginal until now. It is argued here that this is partly caused by the lack of empirical studies thatdemonstrate potential benefits and problems when applying PSS. This paper provides guidelines fororganizations that contemplate on using a participatory PSS. In order to do so, a framework isdeveloped, identifying obstacles that could block effective participation in a PSS. Three planningprocesses are evaluated to investigate the importance of these obstacles. It is demonstrated that,although e-participation has potential as PSS, the lack of political will blocks effective participationand a more profound link between the citizen input and the decision-making is neede

    Cytochrome P4501-inhibiting chemicals amplify aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation and IL-22 production in T helper 17 cells

    The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)controls interleukin 22 production by T helper 17 cells (Th17). IL-22contributes to intestinalhomeostasis but has also been implicated inchronic inflammatory disorders and colorectal cancer, highlighting the need for appropriate regulation of IL-22 production. Upon activation, the AHR induces expression of cytochrome P4501 (CYP1) enzymes that in turn play an important feedback role that curtails the duration of AHR signaling by metabolizingAHRligands. Recently we described how agents that inhibit CYP1 function potentiate AHR signalingby disruptingmetabolic clearance of the endogenous ligand 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ). In the present study, we investigated the immune-modulating effects of environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on Th17 differentiation and IL-22 production. Using Th17 cells deficient in CYP1 enzymes (Cyp1a1/1a2/1b1-/-)we show that these chemicals potentiate AHR activation through inhibition of CYP1 enzymes which leads to increases in intracellular AHR agonists. Our findings demonstrate that IL-22 production by Th17 cellsis profoundly enhanced by impaired CYP1-function and strongly suggest that chemicals able to modify CYP1 function or expression may disrupt AHR-mediated immune regulation by altering the levels of endogenous AHR agonist(s)

    MHV, CSW and BCFW: field theory structures in string theory amplitudes

    Motivated by recent progress in calculating field theory amplitudes, we study applications of the basic ideas in these developments to the calculation of amplitudes in string theory. We consider in particular both non-Abelian and Abelian open superstring disk amplitudes in a flat space background, focusing mainly on the four-dimensional case. The basic field theory ideas under consideration split into three separate categories. In the first, we argue that the calculation of alpha'-corrections to MHV open string disk amplitudes reduces to the determination of certain classes of polynomials. This line of reasoning is then used to determine the alpha'^3-correction to the MHV amplitude for all multiplicities. A second line of attack concerns the existence of an analog of CSW rules derived from the Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action in four dimensions. We show explicitly that the CSW-like perturbation series of this action is surprisingly trivial: only helicity conserving amplitudes are non-zero. Last but not least, we initiate the study of BCFW on-shell recursion relations in string theory. These should appear very naturally as the UV properties of the string theory are excellent. We show that all open four-point string amplitudes in a flat background at the disk level obey BCFW recursion relations. Based on the naturalness of the proof and some explicit results for the five-point gluon amplitude, it is expected that this pattern persists for all higher point amplitudes and for the closed string.Comment: v3: corrected erroneous statement about Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude and added referenc

    The role of the right ventricle in pulmonary arterial hypertension

    Although changes in the pulmonary vasculature are the primary cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), severity of symptoms and survival are strongly associated with right ventricular function, and right heart failure is the main cause of death in patients with PAH. Echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging allow noninvasive evaluation of right ventricular function and structure, and a number of indices have been shown to have potential prognostic value in PAH. Given the importance of the right ventricle in PAH, preservation and improvement of its function should be important aspects of therapy; however, there are currently few data specifically related to this aspect of treatment response. Simple, reproducible, noninvasive measures of right ventricular function would help to improve the management of patients with PAH, and to provide tools with which to help establish the optimal therapeutic approach to manage not only the effects of the disease on the pulmonary vasculature, but also to support and improve right ventricular function
