The best method to store embryo is vitrification using cryoprotectant, but so far, the viability of the embryo after warming process is decreasing. This objective of this research was to know the effect combination ethylene glycol and propanediol as intracellular cryoprotectant on mice blastocyst viability. The experimental animals were female mice strain Balb/C which was super ovulated using Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG) and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG). The oocyte collected from the ampulla of tuba fallopian. In Vitro Fertilization was done by placing the sperm and the oocyte in the same medium then cultured until became blastocyst. The blastocyst was classified into: T1: ethylene glycol 30%, T2: propanediol 30%, T3: ethylene glycol 20% and propanediol 10%, and T3: ethylene glycol 10% and propanediol 20%. Each group was vitrified for a week then warmed immediately. Examination of the viability of blastocyst was done using an inverted microscope after warming process. The statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between single cryoprotectant and combination cryoprotectant group p<0.05. The best cryoprotectant combination was ethylene glycol 10% and propanediol 20

Abundance of rhizospheric bacteria on the IPM-Biointensive system and their antagonistic activities toward Sclerotium rolfsii on soybean. Abundance of beneficial microorganisms in the soil is one of the active soil indicators the success of integrated pests management (IPM) system. Some beneficial groups of microorganisms can be used as biocontrol agents. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of IPM-Biointensive by integrated application of resistant varieties, rice-straw mulch, and biocontrol agents on the abundance of rizospheric bacteria of soybean, also to evaluate the suppressiveness of the bacteria to the mycelial growth of S. rolfsii in vitro. Abundance of the bacteria was determined by isolation using serial dilution and plate-count techniques. Suppression to the fungus was evaluated using dual culture technique. Heat tolerant bacteria had the highest abundance (ranged 1011-1012 cfu/g soil), followed by non-fluorescence bacteria (1011 cfu/g soil), chitinolytic bacteria (106-109 cfu/g soil), and fluorescence bacteria with population range was 103-108 cfu/g soil. Gepak kuning variety grown with application of rice-straw mulch and PGPR (V2M1P1) caused the highest abundance of rizosphere bacteria. One of the heat tolerant bacteria, i.e. TP32, caused the highest suppression to the mycelial growth of S. rolfsii in vitro. Based on the morphology, physiology, and biochemical properties, the isolate was identified as Bacillus sp

Demographic differences between health care workers who did or did not respond to a safety and organizational culture survey

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Areas for institutional improvement to enhance patient safety are commonly identified by surveying health care workers' (HCWs) attitudes, values, beliefs, perceptions and assumptions regarding institutional practices. An ideal response rate of 100% is rarely achieved in such surveys, and non-response bias can occur when non-respondents differ from respondents on a dimension likely to influence survey conclusions. The conditions for non-response bias to occur can be detected by comparing demographic characteristics of respondents and non-respondents and relating any differences to findings in the literature of differences in the construct of interest as a function of these demographic characteristics. The current study takes this approach.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>All 5,609 HCWs at a university medical center were invited to participate in a survey measuring safety and organizational culture (response rate = 53.40%). Respondents indicated their professional group, gender, age group, years of working in the hospital and executive function. Because all HCWs were invited, the demographic composition of the group who did not respond was known. Differences in the demographic composition of respondents and non-respondents were compared using separate Pearson's chi-square tests for each demographic characteristic.</p> <p>Nurses and clinical workers were generally more likely to respond than were physicians, laboratory workers and non-medical workers. Male HCWs were less likely to respond than were females, HCWs aged younger than 45 years old had a lower response rate than did HCWs aged 45 to 54 years old, HCWs who had worked in the hospital for less than 5 years were less likely to respond than were those who had worked in the hospital for 5 years or more and HCWs without an executive function were less likely to respond than were executives.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Demographic characteristics can be linked to response rates and need to be considered in conducting surveys among HCWs. The possibility of non-response bias can be reduced by conducting analyses separately as a function of relevant demographic characteristics, sampling a higher percentage of groups that are known to be less likely to respond, or weighting responses with the reciprocal of the response rate for the respective demographic group.</p

Aquaculture production process have started to use intensive systems, with high stocking density and minimum water USAge. High density may become dangerous for the survival of fish, inhibits the growth of fish and water quality. This research was carried out to know the effect of different density on survival rates and growth of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in the recirculation system using bioball filter. This research was performed at the Laboratory of Fisheries building, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Diponegoro University, Semarang. And conducted for 42 days from August to October 2012. The research used 9 containers size 18 liters buckets, each bucket's filled with 10 liters of water and flowed by filter bucket. Experimental fish was tilapia with an average initial weight of 2.9 g/fish. The research used completely randomized design with 3 treatment (density of 10, 15 and 20 fishes) and three replications. Feed used in the form of commercial feed given 3% of the biomass. The results showed that density has no significant effect on survival rate, but it shows a highly significant effect towards absolute gowth and specific gowth rate. Best density is 10 fishes with an average absolute gowth of 8.77 g, and the specific gowth rate of 3.268%/days. Use filters bioball for ammonia recirculation system can reduce the density of 20 fishes up to the sixth week of the experiment
